Book Gremlin on My Shoulder

Download or read book Gremlin on My Shoulder written by Jon Boyd and published by Amethyst Moon. This book was released on 2010-02 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gremlins are everywhere. When things go wrong, you can bet one is somewhere nearby - maybe even on your shoulder. Whispering in your ear to make you doubt yourself or make a mistake, cackling to himself all the while. Jon Boyd, a twenty-four year military and civilian aviator, recounts some of his most memorable stories where the outcome of the mission or even his survival was in doubt. The worst-case scenario is always only a few feet or milliseconds away: a smoking hole or a spinning ruin of aluminum and aircraft parts. Author Jon Boyd's matter-of-fact story telling, typical of those who live on the edge most of their lives puts you in the cockpit with him and the gremlin; feeling the g's, the exhilaration and the cold sweat caused by the struggle to complete the mission and get back safely to terra firma.

Book Confessions and Memoirs of an Airline Pilot

Download or read book Confessions and Memoirs of an Airline Pilot written by Enrique Captain Enrique "Blyhe" Horta and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-05 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Captain Enrique (Henry) Horta was born the third child of the Horta Family in Ventura California. He lived in various places such as, Los Angeles, San Diego, Mexico, Germany, Mauritius, New Zealand, Japan and Jordan. While spending some of his teen years in Mexico he learned about survival and the importance of appreciating and doing the best of what resources he had. When he returned to California he was a skinny kid with dreams and plans to be a Pilot, traveler and adventurer. His wild dreams of becoming an Astronaut and going to the moon where replaced by more realistic dreams such as wanting to become an Airline Pilot. When he turned 18 years old he parted from his parents and had to join the working rat race starting out as a bag-boy at a local Safeway store. His plans to finish College were halted by his traveling bug so he took a break from school, sold his motorcycle, and went back-packing to Europe with only $1,000 Dollars in his pocket, a Euro-Pass train Ticket for a month, and a return airplane ticket home. Unexpected fatherhood in Germany at a young age made him become more responsible and serious about his dreams. When he returned to California he was now a young family man while working as a carpenter in construction and attending evening University and Flight School on weekends. His positive thinking methods, scholarships, grants, and student loans paid off and he graduated with an Airway Science Degree in addition to all his Pilot ratings and Certificates. Thereafter, his life became more of an adventure and he travelled around the world working for various Airlines as a Contract Pilot.

Book The Life and Adventures of an Old Bold Pilot

Download or read book The Life and Adventures of an Old Bold Pilot written by Mick Greene and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This action-filled autobiography by former test pilot and decorated Vietnam veteran Mick Greene, with introduction by retired General Ron Fogleman, 15th Chief of Staff of the USAF, is a must read for military aviation historians and aviation enthusiasts worldwide. Greene knew at an early age what he wanted to be --a fighter pilot. But as the youngest of a family struggling to get along, his options were limited. Still, he persisted and managed to get an appointment to the Naval Academy. It was a start. But when he learned that upon graduation from the Academy, he could transfer into the Air Force and directly into pilot training, he knew this was what he wanted to do. Years passed, as Greene honed his flying skills in fighter squadrons and later as a test pilot. Then came the ultimate challenge. A combat tour in Vietnam as a "Misty FAC", a then classified, extremely dangerous mission, directing airstrikes against targets along the Ho Chi Minh trail in North Vietnam and Laos. All pilots were volunteers and the losses were high. In his simple, plain spoken way, author Mick Greene describes how he survived in the flak filled skies over North Vietnam.

  • Author : Richard Curtis
  • Publisher : Presidio Press

  • Pages : 359 pages

Download or read book Dumb but Lucky written by Richard Curtis and published by Presidio Press. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Second lieutenant Dick Curtis arrived in Italy in May 1944–twenty years old and part of a shipment of P-51 Mustang fighter pilots so desperately needed that they were rushed into combat with less than thirty hours of flight time in their new high-performance aircraft. Six of the twelve pilots assigned to the 52nd Fighter Group were shot down in the first two weeks. By his ninth mission, Curtis was the only one still flying. A maverick, he barely escaped court-martial with his high-flying antics. Escorting bombers sent to pound heavily defended oil fields was risky enough, but strafing the enemy supply lines, ports, and airfields was even more dangerous. Curtis may chalk up his success to dumb luck, but these missions took exceptional skill and courage. This hair-raising account captures the air war in all its split-second terror and adrenaline-pumping action.

Book Confessions of a Phantom Pilot

Download or read book Confessions of a Phantom Pilot written by Tug Wilson and published by Fonthill Media. This book was released on 2021-12-02 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘The Confessions of a Phantom Pilot’ is the true story of a young RAF pilot who gets his dream to fly the old dirty workhorse fighter of the Cold War. From the first flight where he thought the jet was trying to kill him, through to his final trip of leading eight aeroplanes on a front line fighter squadron, you will relive his thoughts, feelings and anxieties as he stumbles his way through each flight relying on a bit of skill and a lot of blind luck. In essence, it is a love letter to the Phantom from a star-struck boy who felt like he was way out of his depth at the beginning of their affair. You will share stories of the outrageous drinking culture that was a major part of Cold War front-line operations, and marvel at how he didn’t do himself some serious damage either in or out of the cockpit. This is how it feels to be a front-line fighter pilot – the triumphs and the disasters are all laid out here in a completely open and honest way as the author looks back with a certain sense of nostalgia and mild embarrassment. What a blast though!
