Download or read book Protecting Our Kids written by Emily Horowitz and published by Praeger. This book was released on 2015-04-21 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thought-provoking work raises important questions about sex offender laws, drawing from personal stories, research, and data to prove the policies promote fear, destroy lives, and fail to protect children. Do sex offender laws protect children, or are they inherently unfair practices that, at their worst, promote vigilante justice? The latter, this book argues. By analyzing the social, political, historical, and cultural context surrounding the emergence of current sex offender policies and laws, the work shows how sex offenders have come to loom as greater-than-life monsters when, in many cases, that is not true at all. Looking at its subject from a fresh viewpoint, the book shares research and new analyses of data and qualitative evidence to show how sex-offender laws are not only ineffective, but engender destructive fear and anxiety. To help readers understand the impact of these laws, the author presents interviews with sex offenders and their families as they describe the day-to-day reality of living on the sex offender registry. Citing research and statistics, the book challenges the idea that sex offenders must be continually monitored and publicly identified because they are incurably predatory. Most important, the study shows that undue sex offender panic is preventing policymakers from addressing the true threats to children—poverty and growing inequality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The potential interest in this book could be measured by the fact that for the past 3 years the online website for the Maine Sex Offender Registry has had 8 million hits each year. The Evil and the Innocent presents a real life and true inside look at the tragedies and suffering of the victims of sexual assault. Those who committed these crimes against the innocent are described and discussed in detail revealing the sadistic fantasies that swirl in the heads of child sex offenders and how these fantasies manifest themselves into reality with total disregard for the pain and suffering inflicted on the victims - the children. These real and actual cases expose heartbreaking and sometimes nauseating facts of sexual assaults and molestations. As difficult as it may be for the reader, these documented details are openly displayed in the book and will stay with the reader for a long time. Seeing the dead eyes and helpless faces of little children who suffered the onslaught of cruel and inhumane acts are necessary ingredients if change is to occur. The book may startle and sicken you because of the cold, hard, facts that until now have been hidden from you. Why? to protect you. • ISBN : 9781454850342
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Sex Offenders written by Sean Maddan and published by Aspen Publishing. This book was released on 2017-01-19 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about sex offenders. Whereas most books will focus on either sex crimes or sexual deviance, this book examines the entire etiology of sex crimes. This includes discussions of the nature of sex crimes, sexual deviance, and, maybe most importantly, the processing of sex offenders through the criminal justice system. This includes sex offender interactions with law enforcement, the courts, and corrections. Corrections for sex offenders encompasses a myriad of programs: prison, sex offender registration and notification, civil commitments, residence restrictions, and treatment. One unique aspect of this book is its focus on criminal justice system’s treatment of sex offenders, given scant if any coverage in other books. The book also emphasizes two of the most common sex crimes, rape and sex offenses against children, and addresses the impact of sex crimes on victims. In sum, this book offers a comprehensive approach to the study of sex offenders.

Book Criminal Investigations of Sexual Offenses

Download or read book Criminal Investigations of Sexual Offenses written by Nadine Deslauriers-Varin and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-11-22 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is startling to read how few sexual offenses are reported in a year; even more shocking to see how few reports lead to an arrest. Research on effective responses to sexual offenses is much needed and ongoing. This edited book presents the current state of research on investigative techniques used in sex crime investigations, and the operational challenges and issues that arise in these investigations. Including an international cohort of scholars from various academic backgrounds, it reviews current efforts in key areas, synthesizing the research to make recommendations for the improvement of investigative practices and the criminal justice system’s response to sexual offenses. Each chapter includes a brief introduction to the topic, a review of the research, and a discussion of the key points relevant to investigators and researchers as they move forward. The book is broken down into four themes: suspect prioritization and identification techniques, investigative interviewing, operational challenges and issues, and the investigation of specific types of sex crimes. With its broad coverage and international scope, this volume fills the gap in knowledge for investigators working on sex crimes cases. With its easy-to-read style and clear analysis of the research, this is the perfect volume for investigators and law enforcement officers, policy makers and researchers, and students in criminology and criminal justice, forensic psychology, and victim services.

Book Inside the Mind of Sexual Offenders

Download or read book Inside the Mind of Sexual Offenders written by Dennis J. Stevens and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2001 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about sexual offenders. Not the ones on television or at your local movie theater. These are real violators engaged in compulsive criminally violent behavior including abduction, serial rape, sexual homicide, necrophilia, and other grotesque acts visited upon a vulnerable American population whose justice system fails to control. That is, this work departs from an antiseptic world of fiction for a frightening glimpse through the eyes of men, women, children who like cross-eyed creatures lurking on a different plane of existence see their wickedness through a mask of sanity. This work contains a full disclosure of three generations of incarcerated sexual offenders, from grandparents to their grandchildren, who committed the most horrendous acts towards others. In fact, there is no way of knowing how many victims this family assaulted, but in the final analysis there are specifics that you will come to understand about them that may change your point of view about that ultimate punishment available to us. The chapter on predatory pedophiles is a case study of three predators ranging in age from 17 to 52. It reveals the realities of pedophiles and explains why most pedophiles are rarely apprehended, and if they are, why they are eventually released from custody.

Book An Investigation Into the Effective and Ethical Interviewing of Suspected Sex Offenders

Download or read book An Investigation Into the Effective and Ethical Interviewing of Suspected Sex Offenders written by Mark Kebbell and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies show that sexual assault is the offence least likely to be reported to police and, when reported, often does not proceed to court. Two reasons for this are victim reluctance to relive the experience in testimony and cross examination, and the difficulty of presenting a case with no witnesses to corroborate evidence. Research undertaken by the Australian Institute of Criminology has also shown how difficult it is to secure convictions in adult sexual assault cases. This paper reports on a study which investigated ways of improving the likelihood of a guilty offender confessing and is based on interviews with offenders and police. The authors suggest that the credibility of the evidence and the manner in which it is presented to the suspect can affect the likelihood of securing a confession. Although the numbers in the study are relatively small, they are indicative of practical measures that have the potential to improve the efficacy of the criminal justice system for victims of sexual assault.
