Book Confessions of a Rogue Missionary

Download or read book Confessions of a Rogue Missionary written by Henry Rambow and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-09-30 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a National Merit Scholar majoring in physics at Rice University, Henry Rambow thought he was a rational person. But primed by years of Sunday School and haunted by a promise made as a terrified child, he nevertheless fell head over heels into a fundamentalist brand of Christianity. Confessions of a Rogue Missionary is an account of his struggle--and eventual failure--to reconcile his faith with reason. At times dryly humorous and at times sober and contemplative, the story begins when Henry is "born again." Brimming with zeal--but already plagued by doubt--he travels to Beijing as a missionary in the guise of an English teacher, where he tries desperately to embrace the culture and win disciples for Jesus. Culture clashes and miscommunications result in cringe-inducing encounters in unlikely settings, ranging from a brothel to a military base. Eventually, the very questions that troubled him from the start prove to be too much, and his faith collapses entirely, leaving him feeling disillusioned--but free.

Book Great Eagle Rising

Download or read book Great Eagle Rising written by Millie Camille Eehn-Toms and published by . This book was released on 2011-09 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not a "Missionary" type... The word missionary comes with much baggage. It intimidates many people. It puts the missionaries on a spiritual echelon above normal people. I don't appreciate being a missionary sometimes. Remember how God made Balaam's donkey talk? God cannot make people become missionaries because free will is involved. I believe most of those who became missionaries became that because God is irresistible and not because they think they are so holy. I probably have more than a couple of hundred confessions in this book without saying "I confess." I just want you to know that we are only human.

Book Fruit From the Jungle Classic Reprint

Download or read book Fruit From the Jungle Classic Reprint written by M. D. Wood and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-08 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fruit From the Jungle Most of the chapters herein given are experiences from real mission life, and were intended for papers to be read by our young people in America; a few are the outlines of addresses given while on furlough. Some of them have appeared in missionary publica tions in the United States. As this matter accumulated, friends suggested the idea of printing the whole collection in book form. This I finally decided to do, hoping thus to bring these experiences before a larger number of young people, who might thereby obtain a clearer understanding of mission life among the heathen, and whose interest in this great work might thereby be increased. I have always felt that real mission life among the heathen is not so fully depicted to our youth in America as it should be; hence my plainness of speech in several instances. The refined conditions of society in the United States of America make it exceedingly difficult to explain properly real conditions in this field; but it is hoped that this little book will help to an understanding of the great need, and awaken among our young people a sympathy and soul burden for the depressed and lower classes in heathen lands. Book The Unconverted Missionary

Download or read book The Unconverted Missionary written by Matthew McNeil and published by . This book was released on 2017-02-14 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Matthew McNeil decided to take his new wife to the mission field in search of an adventure. One day he's working a dead-end job and six months later finds himself hiking into a Southeast Asian tribal village. "It was like I'd walked into the pages of a National Geographic magazine." Matthew relates an intriguing encounter when he initiates a confrontation with the village men and shares a fascinating story about taking a group of aboriginal children to America as part of a worldwide cultural bridging effort.A few years later, the McNeils relocate to a place the U.S. Embassy warned Americans to stay away from--the volatile island of Mindanao. There they served in an area known as the Killing Fields where they worked with families living in grinding poverty and managed a charity-based clinic where Krystina McNeil has overseen the delivery of 25,000 babies. After learning that troubled teenagers hanging out near the clinic were being targeted for killing by the notorious Davao Death Squad, Matthew pioneered an innovative adventure-based ministry. He details the amazing story of how God used the third wealthiest family in the country to fund a program that helped reach thousands of youth for Christ. Ten years later that ministry imploded in a single day and forced Matthew to reconsider some of Christ's harder teachings--one in particular--and it took a deeper conversion experience to finally recognize it alone is essential to what Jesus asks of us.The McNeils have served as career missionaries in the Philippines for 25 years where they oversee a small mission organization that has mobilized more than 200 people to the mission field. They originate from the Pacific Northwest and are the proud parents of two beautiful daughters.
