Book excerpt: ONE OF BILLBOARD'S "100 GREATEST MUSIC BOOKS OF ALL TIME": The provocative transgender advocate and lead singer of the punk rock band Against Me! provides a searing account of her search for identity and her true self. It began in a bedroom in Naples, Florida, when a misbehaving punk teenager named Tom Gabel, armed with nothing but an acoustic guitar and a headful of anarchist politics, landed on a riff. Gabel formed Against Me! and rocketed the band from its scrappy beginnings-banging on a drum kit made of pickle buckets-to a major-label powerhouse that critics have called this generation's The Clash. Since its inception in 1997, Against Me! has been one of punk's most influential modern bands, but also one of its most divisive. With every notch the four-piece climbed in their career, they gained new fans while infuriating their old ones. They suffered legal woes, a revolving door of drummers, and a horde of angry, militant punks who called them "sellouts" and tried to sabotage their shows at every turn. But underneath the public turmoil, something much greater occupied Gabel-a secret kept for 30 years, only acknowledged in the scrawled-out pages of personal journals and hidden in lyrics. Through a troubled childhood, delinquency, and struggles with drugs, Gabel was on a punishing search for identity. Not until May of 2012 did a Rolling Stone profile finally reveal it: Gabel is a transsexual, and would from then on be living as a woman under the name Laura Jane Grace. Tranny is the intimate story of Against Me!'s enigmatic founder, weaving the narrative of the band's history, as well as Grace's, with dozens of never-before-seen entries from the piles of journals Grace kept. More than a typical music memoir about sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll-although it certainly has plenty of that-Tranny is an inside look at one of the most remarkable stories in the history of rock.

Thomas says of her fellow sociopaths, “We are your neighbors, your coworkers, and quite possibly the people closest to you: lovers, family, friends. Our risk-seeking behavior and general fearlessness are thrilling, our glibness and charm alluring. Our often quick wit and outside-the-box thinking make us appear intelligent—even brilliant. We climb the corporate ladder faster than the rest, and appear to have limitless self-confidence. Who are we? We are highly successful, noncriminal sociopaths and we comprise 4 percent of the American population.” Confessions of a Sociopath—part confessional memoir, part primer for the curious—takes readers on a journey into the mind of a sociopath, revealing what makes them tick while debunking myths about sociopathy and offering a road map for dealing with the sociopaths in your life. M. E. Thomas draws from her own experiences as a diagnosed sociopath; her popular blog, Sociopathworld; and scientific literature to unveil for the very first time these men and women who are “hiding in plain sight.”

Despite her complicated past, Bonnie has established herself as a respected officer in the Las Vegas Metro Police Department, where she is currently assigned to the Henderson precinct. Pree’s effort to bond with her future daughter-in-law includes hosting a weekend getaway for Bonnie and the bridesmaids in a luxury hotel suite in Las Vegas, where they will shop for gowns, flowers, and wedding cake, then take in the show of Bonnie’s choice. Initially impressed with Bonnie’s gracious and thoughtful behavior, Pree inadvertently discovers that her future daughter-in-law isn’t the trustworthy person her son believes her to be. Dreading having to inform her son of Bonnie’s mysterious absences in Las Vegas and especially the lies she had told to cover for them, Pree is spared from doing so when Jimmy, devastated, informs her that Bonnie has disappeared. When a body pulled from under the Cottonwood Cove pier is identified as Bonnie, Jimmy becomes inconsolable. As the last person known to have been with Bonnie before her disappearance, Pree becomes a material witness in an investigation that involves extortion, fraud, coercion, and murder. Book Confessions of the Reluctant Stripper

Download or read book Confessions of the Reluctant Stripper written by Jim Atkisson and published by One Bright Dog Publishing. This book was released on 2022-10-29 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Help Wanted: Adults Wanted For Local Talent Agency Requirements: Secure, Confident, Uninhibited, and Dependable To be a successful stripper a person would need to be secure, confident, uninhibited, and dependable. It’s no wonder why I never found success working inside of the G-string nation as a male stripper. Weekend after weekend, the phrase, “The stripper is here!!!” produced more fear and anxiety inside of me every time I knocked on a door. Often I would ask myself on my way to perform a show, “How on earth, did I get here?” Growing up, my career ambitions were normal. At different points in my life, I considered careers in firefighting, law enforcement, and as an adventuresome cowboy. There were times in my life I did have the chance to wear the uniforms and the clothes of those careers; however, that’s not what I had in mind while I patiently let girls use their teeth to insert cash down my G-string. I lived the life of a rock star without all of the fame…or fortune. I attended parties in shady places, and I woke up in different beds intertwined with sweaty naked bodies. There were drugs, limos, strippers and fans. I was admired and hated by other men. I, also, knew some of the ladies I entertained went home to their husbands and boyfriends with one thing on their mind. These guys should have thanked me in the morning. Despite the girls, limo services, drugs, and quick cash, I dreaded every show offered to me. I was introverted, insecure, boring, and I suffered from any number of anxieties including, stage fright. After a time of homelessness, stripping afforded me a means to transition in life. When the opportunity presented itself, I jumped into the world of body oils, adult toys, chairs, and G-strings and became a Reluctant Stripper.
