Book excerpt: "Confessions of a Living Historian: A Decade of the Antics and Misadventures of a Civil War Reenactor" is the story of Darin Richardson's first ten years as a Civil War reenactor in the most unlikeliest of places: Oregon, in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. This book has it all: Escaped mental patients; "The Edwin Incident;" "K-Mart Confederates;" drunken escapades; "Weasel and the Hicks," two "social diseases"; skinny-dipping at reenactments; the "Rebel Rap;" firearm blunders; interesting uses for coffee; an encounter with Bigfoot; nightmare trips to California reenactments; sexual encounters; belly dancers; a guy named Dub; "hunaha, hu;" being misquoted in newspapers; a trip of a lifetime to Tennessee and Georgia; The Ten Constants of Reenacting; outrageous questions asked by spectators, and views on "hardcore" reenactors and women who portray soldiers.

Book Once More Into the Breach

Download or read book Once More Into the Breach written by Mark Brian Swart and published by . This book was released on 2010-10-26 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AN INSIDER'S LIVELY BEHIND-THE-SCENESLOOK AT THE FASCINATING WORLD OF CIVIL WAR REENACTING Real people. Real life. Real history. Real experiences. Mark Brian Swart knows that reenacting is not just what you see on TV. It's a reality all its own; a combination of high emotions, glowing triumphs, tremendous satisfaction, robust humor, always unbeatable camaraderie, and occasionally even a heartache or two. Most reenactors are superb historians, good friends, and excellent "Pards" - even though every once in a while there's a moron or a bonehead in the crowd. Just like real life. "Once More Into The Breach" lays out - with no strings pulled - the Full Monty of Civil War reenacting so that the reader can find out the actual real-life story behind today's reenacting of the War of the Rebellion. Becoming a Civil War reenactor begins with a little money, a love for history and a calling to preserve it, and finding a club that will take a "Fresh Fish" into its fold. After that, those that do all the "right stuff" are very successful and have one helluva great time. Those that do the "wrong stuff" get awfully lonely out there. "Once More Into The Breach" takes the reader through the whole chronicle of how Civil War reenactors keep history alive, how they learn and teach the lessons of the Past (and why!), how they have so much fun with some of the finest folks in the world, and the cherished memories that they acquire in the pursuit of preserving one of the most incredible events in American History. And it's a whole lot better than what you sometimes get out there in the other "real life." Mark Brian Swart has always enjoyed history. He discovered reenacting back in 1998 when he began to explore "living history" as a Civil War soldier. He began keeping a diary in his second year of re-enacting and his thoughtful, amusing and candid comments were the catalyst for "Once More into the Breach." Mark has realized that too little is known about re-enacting or about those who work so hard to preserve history and to honor those who died to create it. His book has been written to fill that gap.

Book excerpt: WILLIAM E. WOODWARD Tears of Madness FOUNDED 1838 G. P. Putnam s Sons New York Foreword IT HAS not been my intention, in writing this book, to set forth, a complete detailed history of the Civil War, for that has already been done many times by competent historians. What I have had in mind, in writing the book, is to reveal the utter and cruel absurdity of the war, and to show h. 6w it could have been avoided without loss to any American citizen. There is hardly anything in modern history that was so abso lutely foolish as this War Between the States. Moreover, even after the war began there were numerous occasions when it might have been ended with great satisfaction to both sides. But these occasions were neglected, or rejected with scorn from both opponents in the desperate, costly, and bloody struggle. W. E. WOODWABJ My husband was forty-six years old before he began to write professionally. Until then he had been in the advertising busi ness and banking. These he had approached in the spirit of highhanded, but concealed comedy, and his favorite character in Shakespeare during that time was, significantly, Falstaff. In the same spirit of lively comedy he wrote his first three books all of which are now, I regret to say, out of print the novels, Bunk, Lottery, and Bread and Circuses. ll MU. J V - Years of Madriess But when the darker clouds of the late twenties, the failure of the Socialist dreams, the depression and tightening of life fell upon us all, he turned to history and biography. These he never approached in his earlier spirit of mockery. He had always been deeply absorbed in American history. He felt about American history, in which his family had par ticipated so much, theway most of us feel about a family album. At the age of eight he encountered his first book on history. This was a volume showing that the South won the War Between the States, and it took the boy quite a spell to realize that this was not necessarily so. In 1928, he turned his attention to the writing of American history, which he approached and treated as the serious work of his life. Naturally the humor and irony that were part of his temperament remained, but with them a great sense of objectivity and responsibility toward his work. When he died in 1950, he left behind him this book about the Civil War. If his major interest had been American history, its high point with him had always been this war. He did not live long enough to make . those final revisions that such work de mands, and I wish to thank Dr. James Rawley, a young his torian, now teaching American history at New York University, for help in these final revisions. It is true and sadly so in the long stretch of history, that there are times when men must fight for their very exist ence, such as the wars against savages when not only human life but civilization itself is at stake. But there are not many such periods most wars have so little common sense behind them that a student of life cannot fail to suspect that the human race as a whole is insane...

Book excerpt: "The early morning fog surrendered to the rising sun, as we marched into the wilderness. The last vestiges of civilization faded out of our sight, as the sunlight illuminated the woodland canopy and freshly blossomed trees that surrounded us."A quote from a Civil War soldier? A journal entry of a Civil War reenactor? Or both? With that simple statement, Jeffrey Williams begins his journal, and his journey through Civil War reenacting. In the pages that follow, he has skillfully woven historical information with present day reenacting. We are allowed to see moments of grandeur and moments of chaos. We see the realism of a medical demonstration, so well executed that the onlookers are made to realize the horror of war and its aftermath. We see the frustration of vehicles being stuck in the mud, supplies being short, tempers being short, and everything in general going wrong. This is the story of the American Civil War as told through the eyes of a veteran Civil War reenactor and historian. Whether you are a long-time reenactor, a beginner, or just someone who has a great interest in the history of the American Civil War, this book will cause you to laugh loudly sometimes, shake your head in bewilderment at other times, and smile knowingly when you "get the message." In the end, it will strengthen your faith in the overall goodness of mankind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1861, James B. Griffin left Edgefield, South Carolina and rode off to Virginia to take up duty with the Confederate Army in a style that befitted a Southern gentleman: on a fine-blooded horse, with two slaves to wait on him, two trunks, and his favorite hunting dog. He was thirty-five years old, a wealthy planter, and the owner of sixty-one slaves when he joined Wade Hampton's elite Legion as a major of cavalry. He left behind seven children, the eldest only twelve, and a wife who was eight and a half months pregnant. As a field officer in a prestigious unit, the opportunities for fame and glory seemed limitless. Griffin, however, performed no daring acts, nor did he inspire great loyalty in his men. Instead, he unknowingly provided a unique and invaluable portrait of the Confederate officers who formed the core of Southern political, military, and business leadership. In A Gentleman and an Officer, Judith N. McArthur and Orville Vernon Burton have collected eighty of Griffin's letters written at the Virginia front, and during later postings on the South Carolina coast, to his wife Leila Burt Griffin. Extraordinary in their breadth and volume, the letters encompass Griffin's entire Civil War service, detailing living conditions and military maneuvers, the jockeying for position among officers, and the different ways officers and enlisted men interacted during the Civil War. Unlike the reminiscences and biographies of high-ranking, well-known Confederate officers or studies and edited collections of letters of members of the rank and file, this collection sheds light on the life of a middle officer--a life turned upside down by extreme military hardship and complicated further by the continuing need for reassurance about personal valor and status common to men of the southern gentry. In these letters, Griffin describes secret troop movements in various military actions such as the Hampton Legion's role in the Peninsula Campaign (details that would certainly have been censored in more recent wars). Here he relates the march from Manassas to Fredricksburg, the siege of Yorktown and the retreat to Richmond, and the fighting at Eltham's landing and Seven Pines, where Griffin commanded the legion after Hampton was wounded. Throughout, as Griffin recounts these most extraordinary of times, he illuminates the most ordinary of day-to-day issues. One might expect to find a Confederate officer meditating on slavery, emancipation, or Lincoln. Instead, we are confronted by simple humanity and simple concerns, from the weather to gossip. Monumental historical events intruded on Griffin's life and sent him off to war, but his heartfelt considerations were about his family, his community, and his own personal pride. Ultimately, Griffin's letters present the Civil War as the refinery, the ordeal by fire, that tested and verified--or modified--Southern upperclass values. With a fascinating combination of military and social history, A Gentleman and an Officer moves from the beginning of the Civil War at Fort Sumter through the end of the war and Reconstruction, vividly illustrating how the issues of the Civil War were at once devastatingly national and revealingly local.

Book excerpt: The Shelf2Life American Civil War Collection is a unique and exciting collection of pre-1923 titles focusing on the American Civil War and the people and events surrounding it. From memoirs and biographies of notable military figures to firsthand accounts of famous battles and in-depth discussions of slavery, this collection is a remarkable opportunity for scholars and historians to rediscover the experience and impact of the Civil War. The volumes contained in the collection were all written within 60 years of the end of the war, which means that most authors had living memory of it and were facing the effects of the war while writing. These firsthand accounts allow the modern reader to more fully understand the culture of both the Union and Confederacy, the politics that governed the escalation and end of the war, the personal experience of life during the Civil War, and the most difficult and polarizing question in the history of the United States: slavery. The American Civil War Collection allows new readers access to the contemporary arguments and accounts surrounding the war, and is a vital new tool in understanding this important and pivotal chapter in American history.

Download or read book The Civil War in History Classic Reprint written by Asa a Spear and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Civil War in History A modern writer has said: "History is a diary of the human race." Such a diary does not disclose all its teachings to the writer, nor to the actors in the events recorded. If faithfully and truly written, the story told will unfold as the years go by, and present to those who read, lessons and truths unthought of when the record was written. The diary of the Civil War has been written by many and distinguished historians, some actors in its scenes, and others not, who have sought to record the great and controlling events of that bloody struggle from different view points and often colored by personal experiences, or told in such way as to add luster to the names and deeds of certain distinguished actors. But these diaries have given us, in the main, a reliable story, from which we may draw safe and abiding lessons for the nation's future guidance. Many diaries of the Civil War have been written in humbler fashion, by less distinguished people, and recording the deeds of humbler men, which are none the less truthful, and which, none the less, contain the richer teachings of those strenuous years. Each one of us, comrades, has written such a diary, either upon paper, or in the hearts and lives of those near to us.
