Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Confessions of a Book-Lover Tom Jones I found in an attic and I was al lowed to read it by a pious aunt, whom I was visit ing, because she mixed it up with Tom Brown of Rugby' but I found it even more tiresome than Eric, or Little by Little, for which I dropped it. I remember, too, that I was rather shocked by some things written in the Old Testament; and I retorted to my aunt's pronouncement that she considered the 'arabian Nights a dangerous book, ' by saying that the Old Testament was the worst book I had ever read; but I supposed people had put something into it when God wasn't look ing. She sent me home. At home, I was permitted to read only the New Testament On winter Sunday afternoons, when there was nothing else to do, I became sincerely attached to the Acts of the Apostles And I came to the conclusion that nobody could tell a short story as well as Our Lord Himself. The Centurion was one of my favourite characters. He seemed to be such a good soldier; and his plea, Lord, I am not worthy, flashes across my mental vision every day of my life. Book excerpt: Confessions of a Book-Lover by Maurice Francis Egan To get the best out of books, I am convinced that you must begin to love these perennial friends very early in life. It is the only way to know all their "curves," all those little shadows of expression and small lights. There is a glamour which you never see if you begin to read with a serious intention late in life, when questions of technique and grammar and mere words begin to seem too important. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

My mother objected to the translations from Anacreon; she said they were "improper"; but my father said that he had been assured on competent authority that they were "classic," and of course that settled it. There was no story in them, and they seemed to me to be stupid. Just about this time, one of the book auctions yielded up a copy of the "Complete Works of Miss Mitford." You perhaps can imagine how a city boy, who was allowed to spend two weeks each year at the most on the arid New Jersey seacoast, fell[...]".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I shall hope to set down some of these, together with the passages to which they refer. Here is one example, which will serve to convey an idea of my friend’s manner of commenting upon an author’s words. The passage in point reads thus: ‘When thou hast been compelled by circumstances to be disturbed in a manner, quickly return to thyself, and do not remain out of tune longer than the compulsion lasts; for thou wilt have more mastery over the harmony by continually recurring to it.’ By the side of this, written in lead pencil, are the following words: ‘Might not human life be compared to an orchestra, composed of all kinds of instruments? I mean that each of our natures is, so to say, an instrument, some more pleasing and, seemingly, more useful than others; but of equal value when played in accord with the combined orchestra. And if we, at any time, drop out of him, is it not because we have failed to give our attention to the Great Conductor of all?’...FROM THE BOOKS.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Confessions of a Browning Lover As I look over these pages, now that they are finished, I wonder if I have accomplished the pur pose with which I began. I seem to have been ever a fighter The controversial note runs through much of what I have written. Well, there seem to be plenty of windmills in our modern life at which to tilt, and a Browning lover ought not to be averse to breaking a lance now and then. If sometimes I have fought with shadows, or doughtily overthrown a man of straw, it may be I have discovered to the world some lurking enemy whose presence was unsuspected, or that I have shown the unknowing where they may arm them selves when the hour comes to fight. Book Ex Libris

Download or read book Ex Libris written by Anne Fadiman and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2011-04-01 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anne Fadiman is--by her own admission--the sort of person who learned about sex from her father's copy of Fanny Hill, whose husband buys her 19 pounds of dusty books for her birthday, and who once found herself poring over her roommate's 1974 Toyota Corolla manual because it was the only written material in the apartment that she had not read at least twice. This witty collection of essays recounts a lifelong love affair with books and language. For Fadiman, as for many passionate readers, the books she loves have become chapters in her own life story. Writing with remarkable grace, she revives the tradition of the well-crafted personal essay, moving easily from anecdotes about Coleridge and Orwell to tales of her own pathologically literary family. As someone who played at blocks with her father's 22-volume set of Trollope ("My Ancestral Castles") and who only really considered herself married when she and her husband had merged collections ("Marrying Libraries"), she is exquisitely well equipped to expand upon the art of inscriptions, the perverse pleasures of compulsive proof-reading, the allure of long words, and the satisfactions of reading out loud. There is even a foray into pure literary gluttony--Charles Lamb liked buttered muffin crumbs between the leaves, and Fadiman knows of more than one reader who literally consumes page corners. Perfectly balanced between humor and erudition, Ex Libris establishes Fadiman as one of our finest contemporary essayists.

Book The Confessions of a Collector Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Confessions of a Collector Classic Reprint written by William Carew Hazlitt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05-02 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Confessions of a Collector Scotish blood of his maternal progenitors, the Stoddarts and Moncrieffs, a certain share of taste for antiquities, or, at any rate, for memorials of the past in a literary shape, was inherited by the Hazlitts. My immediate paternal ancestor, the late Mr Registrar Hazlitt, undoubtedly possessed a strong in stinctive disposition to form around him a collection of books. He was emphatically acquisitive almost to the last; and had he been a richer man, he would probably have left behind him a fairly good and extensive library. My father was deficient in know ledge and insight - I might add, in judgment. He bought the wrong copies, or he allowed the right ones to be massacred by a pagan binder; but he was a book-lover. The nucleus of his collection had been a set of Hazlitt's works, a few volumes given to him by Miss Lamb and others, and, of course, his own publications.
