Book Confessions of a Bar Brat

Download or read book Confessions of a Bar Brat written by Judith A. Boggess and published by Epigraph Books. This book was released on 2017-05-12 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Narrated by a young girl growing up in the coarsest, most hell-raising bar on Main Street, Rosendale, NY in the early 50s, Confessions of a Bar Brat, is an unforgettable memoir of a girl's day-to-day living with the effects of overt and covert abuse, sexual abuse, and parental neglect. The story is told in a six to 12 year old colloquial dialect unflinchingly and honestly; it's about the capacity of the human spirit to endure, to bloom, and to see humor in chaos. The Rosendale Theatre is where she internalizes the actions of strong feminine movie role models, and learns to reject the influence of drunken antics of her mother, not fear the physical threats of violence by her father, and to question the dogma of the Catholic Church. After years of avoidance, an ironic epiphany frees her from a "mortal sin," and sets her on a path of self-actualization. The memoir is very visual, enhanced by years of movie going. It is peppered with bawdy barroom scenes, salty language, and redneck hard-drinking humor. This contrasts with the 40-50s mentions of actors, their latest movies, and the music of these times. Many historical references to village businesses and their owners complete the scene of the child's refreshing viewpoint of growing up in Rosendale.

With pop pastiche, lyrical pirouettes, and sage insights parading as 'confessions, ' these poems position-like a ballet class at its bar pivoting towards the mirror-the young against the old, the native against the new, and the innocent against the cynical to show them how, together, they more beautifully out of sync." -Monica McClure, author of Tender Data

While spending some of his teen years in Mexico he learned about survival and the importance of appreciating and doing the best of what resources he had. When he returned to California he was a skinny kid with dreams and plans to be a Pilot, traveler and adventurer. His wild dreams of becoming an Astronaut and going to the moon where replaced by more realistic dreams such as wanting to become an Airline Pilot. When he turned 18 years old he parted from his parents and had to join the working rat race starting out as a bag-boy at a local Safeway store. His plans to finish College were halted by his traveling bug so he took a break from school, sold his motorcycle, and went back-packing to Europe with only $1,000 Dollars in his pocket, a Euro-Pass train Ticket for a month, and a return airplane ticket home. Unexpected fatherhood in Germany at a young age made him become more responsible and serious about his dreams. When he returned to California he was now a young family man while working as a carpenter in construction and attending evening University and Flight School on weekends. His positive thinking methods, scholarships, grants, and student loans paid off and he graduated with an Airway Science Degree in addition to all his Pilot ratings and Certificates.
