Book Byzantine Butrint

Download or read book Byzantine Butrint written by Richard Hodges and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2020-02-28 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maskwork is a new way of looking at the art of masks and mask-making: a unique combination of ethnography, design and practical advice. Jenny Foreman's book for teachers and practitioners of drama, art, design and technology grew out of a research bursary from the UK's National Society for Education in Art and Design. They received her report with great enthusiasm as "one of the very best projects . . . likely to make a valuable and useful contribution" to both specific and cross-discipline school and college courses as well as to adult performing groups. The first part explains the anthropology, nature, use and meaning of masks around the world, from prehistory to modern times. Richly illustrated with colour and black-and-white photographs, this section introduces the ethical implications of free use of masks which have ethnographical connections - an important aspect completely neglected elsewhere. The second part comprises eight theme workshops, including theory, background and instructions for mask-making, supplemented by photographs of assembly and use by groups of people from all age-ranges. Materials are inexpensive and easy to acquire, while line drawings aid step-by-step construction. A bibliography and reference section helps readers go on to even greater understanding and achievements.

Book Roman Decorative Stone Collections in the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology

Download or read book Roman Decorative Stone Collections in the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology written by J. Clayton Fant and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2024 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the turn of the twentieth century, Francis W. Kelsey began to amass a large collection of artifacts from ancient sites across the Mediterranean, with an emphasis on Imperial Rome, to broaden the teaching of antiquity at the University of Michigan. Among the objects now housed in the museum that bears his name is a collection of seven hundred colorful stones dating to the Roman period, one of the largest and most varied collections of Roman decorative stones outside Europe. These pieces were obtained as archaeological artifacts, mostly architectural, with many deriving from well-known ancient buildings, such as the Baths of Diocletian in Rome and the Palace of Herod in Jericho, allowing for new interpretations of their architectural decoration and design. Chapters trace the formation of the collection, study the archaeology of the artifacts, and detail the history of each stone and its study with a comprehensive bibliography. In keeping with the nature of the collection, Roman Decorative Stone Collections focuses on archaeological contexts and object biographies, from the stones' first use to their eventual display in the Kelsey Museum. Entries are accompanied by rich photographs detailing the stones' appearances, environmental factors, and their collectors. The fully illustrated catalog includes essays deriving from Kelsey's original notes on sources, buildings, sites, and dealers. As the first formal catalog of these items, Roman Decorative Stone Collections is an accessible resource of Roman archaeology, antiquities, and the decorative arts.

  • Author : Bruce Gibson
  • Publisher : OUP Oxford
  • Release : 2013-02-28
  • ISBN : 019150730X
  • Pages : 433 pages

Download or read book Polybius and his World written by Bruce Gibson and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2013-02-28 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From his first publication, Aratos of Sicyon (1933), to his death in 2008, F. W. Walbank established himself as one of the leading ancient historians of the last century. His many publications - not least his three-volume commentary on the Greek historian of Roman power, Polybius - transformed the study both of Polybius and of the history of the Hellenistic world. Polybius and his World honours Walbank's achievement by bringing together a number of leading scholars in the fields of Hellenistic historiography and history. The twenty chapters, including an introduction by the volume's editors, re-examine a number of central Polybian themes: Polybius' position between Greece and Rome, his account of the Roman constitution, and the relationship of his work with Xenophon, Phylarchus, Aratus of Sicyon, and Livy (amongst others). The book looks at Polybius' text in the light of narratological perspectives and for the wealth of source material it offers for the economic historian, whilst three chapters also consider aspects of Walbank's own life and work, especially the relationship between his political commitments and his academic work, the genesis of his Polybian commentary, and the personal backdrop to his career.
