Book A VLSI Architecture for Concurrent Data Structures

Download or read book A VLSI Architecture for Concurrent Data Structures written by J. W. Dally and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concurrent data structures simplify the development of concurrent programs by encapsulating commonly used mechanisms for synchronization and commu nication into data structures. This thesis develops a notation for describing concurrent data structures, presents examples of concurrent data structures, and describes an architecture to support concurrent data structures. Concurrent Smalltalk (CST), a derivative of Smalltalk-80 with extensions for concurrency, is developed to describe concurrent data structures. CST allows the programmer to specify objects that are distributed over the nodes of a concurrent computer. These distributed objects have many constituent objects and thus can process many messages simultaneously. They are the foundation upon which concurrent data structures are built. The balanced cube is a concurrent data structure for ordered sets. The set is distributed by a balanced recursive partition that maps to the subcubes of a binary 7lrcube using a Gray code. A search algorithm, VW search, based on the distance properties of the Gray code, searches a balanced cube in O(log N) time. Because it does not have the root bottleneck that limits all tree-based data structures to 0(1) concurrency, the balanced cube achieves 0C.:N) con currency. Considering graphs as concurrent data structures, graph algorithms are pre sented for the shortest path problem, the max-flow problem, and graph parti tioning. These algorithms introduce new synchronization techniques to achieve better performance than existing algorithms.

Book Functional Programming Concurrency Simulation and Automated Reasoning

Download or read book Functional Programming Concurrency Simulation and Automated Reasoning written by Peter E. Lauer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1993-06-16 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of papers arose from a series of lectures for workers in computer science and other disciplines. The lectures were intended to familiarize them with some of the most exciting advanced computer based systems for the conceptualization, design, implementation, simulation, and logical analysis of applications in these disciplines. The collection presents some strong motivational points for the use of theory based systems in the areas of functional programming, concurrency, simulation, and automated reasoning, highlighting some of their advantages and disadvantages relative to conventional systems. The papers are mostly the work of individuals who were among the originators of the systemspresented. The volume is intended as a contribution to narrowing the learning gap facing conventional computer users when they wish to use advanced theory based systems. The papers are meant for a wide audience and should not require great mathematical sophistication for their comprehension. The papers contain numerous references for those wishing to pursue a topic in greater depth.

Book PARLE 92 Parallel Architectures and Languages Europe

Download or read book PARLE 92 Parallel Architectures and Languages Europe written by Daniel Etiemble and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1992-06-03 with total page 1012 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1992 Parallel Architectures and Languages Europe conference continues the tradition - of a wide and representative international meeting of specialists from academia and industry in theory, design, and application of parallel computer systems - set by the previous PARLE conferences held in Eindhoven in 1987, 1989, and 1991. This volume contains the 52 regular and 25 poster papers that were selected from 187 submitted papers for presentation and publication. In addition, five invited lectures areincluded. The regular papers are organized into sections on: implementation of parallel programs, graph theory, architecture, optimal algorithms, graph theory and performance, parallel software components, data base optimization and modeling, data parallelism, formal methods, systolic approach, functional programming, fine grain parallelism, Prolog, data flow systems, network efficiency, parallel algorithms, cache systems, implementation of parallel languages, parallel scheduling in data base systems, semantic models, parallel data base machines, and language semantics.

Book Readings in Object Oriented Database Systems

Download or read book Readings in Object Oriented Database Systems written by Stanley B. Zdonik and published by Morgan Kaufmann. This book was released on 1990 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive collection is a survey of research in object-oriented databases, offering a substantive overview of the field, section introductions, and over 40 research papers presented in their original scope and detail. The balanced selection of articles presents a confluence of ideas from both the language and database research communities that have contributed to the object-oriented paradigm. The editors develop a general definition and model for object-oriented databases and relate significant research efforts to this framework. Further, the collection explores the fundamental notions behind object-oriented databases, semantic data models, implementation of object-oriented systems, transaction processing, interfaces, and related approaches. Research and theory are balanced by applications to CAD systems, programming environments, and office information systems.

Book LISP Lore and Logic

    Book Details:
  • Author : W. Richard Stark
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 1461389313
  • Pages : 294 pages

Download or read book LISP Lore and Logic written by W. Richard Stark and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a presentation of LISP which is both practical and theoretical. For the practical, the syntax of the language, the programming styles, and the semantics of computation are carefully developed. For the theoretical, the algebra of interpreters, the lambda calculus as a foundation for LISP, and the algebraic significance of LISP's approach to artificial intelligence are discussed. As the title suggests, the book reaches beyond the technical side of LISP to present colorful applications, historical comments and quotations, computational philosophy, consequences of LISP's exceptional power, and much more. The material has been designed to appeal to a variety of readers, from the bright freshman to the practicing professional, and from computer scientists and mathematicians to chemists, engineers, and philosophers.
