Book Tayloring Reformed Epistemology

Download or read book Tayloring Reformed Epistemology written by Deane-Peter Baker and published by Hymns Ancient and Modern Ltd. This book was released on 2007 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent philosophical discourse, there has been a proliferation of work in the field of philosophy of religion, and in particular at the intersection between epistemology and philosophy of religion. Much of that interest has centred on the emergence of what has come to be known as 'Reformed Epistemology'. The central claim of Reformed epistemologists is that belief in God is properly basic. The purpose of the arguments offered by Reformed epistemologists is to oppose what Plantinga calls the 'de jure' objection to theistic belief - the idea that it is somehow irrational, a dereliction of epistemic duty, or in some other sense epistemically unacceptable, to believe in God. This objection is distinct from what Plantinga labels the 'de facto' objection - the objection that, whatever the rational status of belief in God, it is, in fact, a false belief. The primary goal of Reformed epistemology, then, is to defend Christian belief against the de jure objection, thereby showing that everything really depends on the truth of Christian belief. This book demonstrates the feasibility of combining the Reformed epistemologist's position with an argument for theism that the author draws from Charles Taylor's work. In it, he shows the value that would be added to the Reformed epistemologist's position by such a combination.

Book Epistemology as Theology

Download or read book Epistemology as Theology written by James Beilby and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alvin Plantinga is arguably one of the most influential philosophers of our time. Much of his career has been devoted to explaining and defending the intellectual acceptability of Christian belief. Recently he has developed a comprehensive, rigorous, and distinctively Christian religious epistemology. This book presents the development of Plantinga's religious epistemology before considering Plantinga's mature religious epistemology in detail. Locating Plantinga's most recent work in the context of his theological assumptions, his previous work on religious epistemology, and in the context of the current debate over how knowledge should be characterized, Beilby blends theological and philosophical discussion to offer a unique perspective on Plantinga's influential proposal.

Book The Annihilation of Hell

    Book Details:
  • Author : Nik Ansell
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2013-10-01
  • ISBN : 1625643578
  • Pages : 485 pages

Download or read book The Annihilation of Hell written by Nik Ansell and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "For Jÿrgen Moltmann, Hell is the nemesis of Hope. The ""annihilation of Hell"" thus refers both to Hell's annihilative power in history and to the overcoming of that power as envisioned by Moltmann's distinctive theology of the cross in which God becomes ""all in all"" through Christ's descent into Godforsakenness. The negation of Hell and the fulfillment of history are inseparable. Attentive to the overall contours and dynamics of Moltmann's thinking--especially his zimzum doctrine of creation, his eschatologically oriented philosophy of time, and his expanded understanding of the nature-grace relationship--this study asks whether the universal salvation that he proposes can honor human freedom, promise vindication for those who suffer, and do justice to biblical revelation. As well as providing an in-depth exposition of Moltmann's ideas, The Annihilation of Hell also explores how a ""covenantal universalism"" might revitalize our web of beliefs in a way that is attuned to the authorizing of Scripture and the spirituality of existence. If divine and human freedom are to be reconciled, as Moltmann believes, the confrontation between Hell and Hope will entail rethinking issues that are not only at the center of theology but at the heart of life itself."
