Book Urban Transportation Planning in the United States

Download or read book Urban Transportation Planning in the United States written by Edward Weiner and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1999-02-28 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of U.S. urban transportation policy over the past 50 years illustrates the changing relationship between federal, state, and local governments. This comprehensive text examines the evolution of urban transportation planning from early developments in highway planning in the 1930s to the concern for sustainable development and pollution emissions. Focusing on major national events, the book discusses the influence of legislation, regulations, conferences, federal programs, and advances in planning procedures and technology. The book offers an in-depth look at the most significant event in transportation planning—the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1962. Creating a federal mandate for a comprehensive urban transportation planning process carried out cooperatively by states and local governments with federal funding, this act was crucial in the spread of urban transporation. Claiming that urban transportation planning is more sophisticated, costly, and complex than its highway and transit planning predecessors, the book demonstrates how urban transportation planning evolved in response to changes in such factors as environment, energy, development patterns, intergovernmental coordination, and federal transit programs. It further illustrates how broader concerns for global climate change and sustainable development have braided the purview of transportation planning.

Book Incorporating Feedback in Travel Forecasting

Download or read book Incorporating Feedback in Travel Forecasting written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most common method for producing regional or metropolitan area travel forecasts in the United States is to apply the following four modeling steps sequentially: trip generation; trip distribution; mode choice; and, route assignment. This traditional 4-step process passes output from one step to the next as input. While the process has produced forecast results sufficiently accurate for many types of long range transportation planning, it is commonly found that some of the outputs of the process are not consistent with inputs to earlier steps. The research undertaken in this project focused on methods to ensure that link speeds used in each step of the travel forecasting process are consistent with the final speeds estimated in the final step of the process. As a product of this research, a final report was prepared to provide guidance in the application of feedback.

Readers will find an analytic and evaluation framework - along with process design guidelines - that will help improve the usefulness and applicability of public input. - Shows how to apply quantifiable metrics to the public participation process - Helps readers critically analyze and identify project properties that impact public participation process decisions - Provides in-depth examples that demonstrate how feedback, representation, and decision modeling can be integrated to achieve outcomes - Demonstrates basic principles using examples from a wide range of types and scales - Presents tactics on how to make public meetings more efficient and satisfying by integrating appropriate visualizations

Book Methods for Household Travel Surveys

Download or read book Methods for Household Travel Surveys written by Peter R. Stopher and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 1996 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to planning, administrative, and traffic officials in state transportation agencies and in metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs); to consultants concerned with the design and conduct of surveys; and to those engaged in developing and applying travel forecasting models. It describes the various facets of planning, designing, conducting, and evaluating household travel surveys. This report of the Transportation Research Board provides information on the manner in which many household surveys are currently carried out and provides comment on the likely changes in the process, in the survey instrument, and in the application of more cost-effective methods of data collection in household travel surveys. This synthesis describes the methods for collection, including survey instrument design, as well as testing and administering the surveys. Information on time and cost requirements is also included, as are descriptions of evaluation and data analysis methods.
