Book Bello and Bol var

Download or read book Bello and Bol var written by Antonio Cussen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1992-05-07 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Andrés Bello predicted in 1823, the glory of Simón Bolívar has continued to grow since the Spanish American Revolution. The Revolution is still viewed as an almost mythical quest, and the name of the Libertador has become synonymous with the region's hopes for integration. In this 1992 book, the official history of the Revolution - the heroic history of Bolívar - is replaced by the account of Bello, who was first Bolívar's teacher and later his critic. Through a detailed study of the manuscripts of Bello's unfinished poem América, Antonio Cussen reconstructs Bello's version of the Revolution and seeks to understand its political and cultural consequences. The author argues that Bello recorded the disintegration of the Augustan model of power and intimated the inevitable approach of liberalism with a certain longing for the classical culture of his youth.

Book The Foreign Political Press in Nineteenth Century London

Download or read book The Foreign Political Press in Nineteenth Century London written by Constance Bantman and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a period of turmoil when European and international politics were in constant reshaping, immigrants and political exiles living in London set up periodicals which contributed actively to national and international political debates. Reflecting an interdisciplinary and international discussion, this book offers a rare long-term specialist perspective into the cosmopolitan and multilingual world of the foreign political press in London, with an emphasis on periodicals published in European languages. It furthers current research into political exile, the role of print culture and personal networks as intercultural agents and the dynamics of transnational political and cultural exchange in global capitals. Individual chapters deal with Brazilian, French, German, Indian, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Spanish American, and Russian periodicals. Overarching themes include a historical survey of foreign political groups present in London throughout the long 19th century and the causes and movements they championed; analyses of the press in local and transnational contexts; and a focus on its actors and on the material conditions in which this press was created and disseminated. The Foreign Political Press in Nineteenth-Century London is a useful volume for students and academics with an interest in 19th-century politics or the history of the press.

Book Informal Empire in Latin America

Download or read book Informal Empire in Latin America written by Matthew Brown and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-04-20 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is an interdisciplinary interrogation of the concept of British 'informal empire' in Latin America. It builds upon recent advances in the historiography of imperialism and studies of the nineteenth-century modern world, most obviously the work of Ann Stoler, Catherine Hall and C.A. Bayly. Combining a comparative perspective with the juxtaposition of political economy, cultural history, gendered and postcolonial approaches, and by proposing and debating alternative explanatory models, the book breathes new life into the flagging concept of 'informal empire'. It illuminates the study of British imperialism, from which Latin America is usually conspicuous only by its absence, and provides a broad and sound basis for interpreting the complex processes of nation-building and state-formation in Latin America. The book includes essays by scholars who have been shaping the debate for several decades, alongside work by a younger generation of researchers keen to re-conceptualise and re-assess the roles of capital, commerce and culture in shaping informal empire.

Book Immigration and Exile Foreign Language Press in the UK and in the US

Download or read book Immigration and Exile Foreign Language Press in the UK and in the US written by Stéphanie Prévost and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-12-14 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both Britain and the United States have had a long history of harbouring foreign political exiles, who often set up periodicals which significantly contributed to community-building and political debates. However, this varied and complex journalism has received little attention to date, particularly regarding the languages in which it was produced. This wide-ranging edited volume brings together for the first time interdisciplinary case studies of the exile foreign-language press (in French, German, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Flemish, Polish, among other languages) across Britain and the US, establishing a useful comparative framework to explore how periodicals tackled key political, linguistic and literary issues from the 19th century to the present day. Building on the existing literature on the exile foreign-language press in the United States and developing the study of this phenomenon in the British context, Immigration and Exile Foreign-Language Press in the UK and in the US offers fresh perspectives into how these marginalised periodicals influenced the political, economic and social contexts that brought them into existence. This is a major contribution to the burgeoning field of transnational periodicals and will be of interest to anyone studying the history of the Anglo-American press, the history of immigration and cultural history.
