Often referred to as one of the "Little Fingers," it is located about 25 miles south of Rochester, New York. In 1924, the City of Rochester announced plans to use Conesus Lake to supplement the water supply for its residents. A year later, cottagers around the lake successfully banded together to protect Conesus's sparkling waters and preserve the area as a summer resort. Over time, the lake area has grown, and restaurants, taverns, campgrounds, and amusement parks have sprung up from the demand of the lake's many visitors. Today, four towns--Geneseo, Groveland, Conesus, and Livonia--border the approximate 18 miles of shoreline.

Book The Story of the Great Lakes Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of the Great Lakes Classic Reprint written by Edward Channing and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Great Lakes For three hundred years the Great Lakes have been the centre of an immensely varied and interesting history. They were originally the home of savages; they were discovered and explored by Frenchmen; they became the scene of a century-long struggle for possession by Indians of many tribes and white men of three nations; and they have been finally occupied and developed by Americans. In every epoch they present a rich field for study. No minute and exhaustive chronicle has been attempted in this volume, but important events, with the customs and life of each period, have been brought together and presented. Changes have come with such rapidity that the conditions of fifty years ago seem remote to-day. In this swift progress the heritage of the past must not be forgotten. About mm the first two chapters were worked 08 the press tn conjunction with two other works, since being of an introductory nature they were applicable to all three, though with some changes in regard to the second chapter. Last year this work was pushed forward again to page 48, when winter stopped further work on it until spring. We are not aware as to what may have been gathered by any local historian concerning the annals of the Devits Lake region, or more especially, in regard to the earlier history of the city of Devils Lake. We were toid some years ago that at least a sketch was in print there. We have not had the advantage of any local history concerning the city or Devils Lake that possibly may have been printed, but for the year 1883 and first half of 1883 the old tiles of the Larimore Pio neer furnished considerable information which might have been somewhat expanded had correspondents at the lake exerted themserves more than they did. Such correspondence is now of some historical value especially where written from any settlement long before any local paper has entered the same field. Soon after the railroad reached the lake hardly anything more was said in the Pioneer concerning Devils Lake affairs. With the adventof the railroad the old time history 75! The lake region ended. For anew era had begun. Irma to, span. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
