Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We often assume that works of visual art are meant to be seen. Yet that assumption may be a modern prejudice. The ancient world - from China to Greece, Rome to Mexico - provides many examples of statues, paintings, and other images that were not intended to be visible. Instead of being displayed, they were hidden, buried, or otherwise obscured. In this third volume in the Visual Conversations in Art & Archaeology series, leading scholars working at the intersection of archaeology and the history of art address the fundamental question of art's visibility. What conditions must be met, what has to be in place, for a work of art to be seen at all? The answer is both historical and methodological; it concerns ancient societies and modern disciplines, and encompasses material circumstances, perceptual capacities, technologies of visualization, protocols of classification, and a great deal more. The emerging field of archaeological art history is uniquely suited to address such questions. Intrinsically comparative, this approach cuts across traditional ethnic, religious, and chronological categories to confront the academic present with the historical past. The goal is to produce a new art history that is at once cosmopolitan in method and global in scope, and in doing so establish new ways of seeing - new conditions of visibility - for shared objects of study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents abridged versions of several papers that were given at an earlier symposium on the subject of driving under adverse visibility conditions. Topics covered include among others: safe driving in fog, international efforts in solving reduced visibility problems, Wyoming's experience with reduced visibility, fog research in Oregon, visibility in blowing snow, improving the conspicuity of highway-rail grade crossing signals, and Arizona's dust signing system. A summary of the major topics covered are highlighted, as well as a summary of the necessary steps for dealing successfully with limited visibility conditions. Finally, a listing of research topics felt to be necessary to shed further light on limited visibility conditions is presented.

Book excerpt: The content of the book reconsiders the relation between visibility and transcendence. The focus is especially on the contribution to this issue from the theological tradition in protestant Europe between the 16th and the 21st Centuries. In the book a thematically broad field is covered embracing more than five centuries and a plurality of methods drawn from theology, philosophy, and the history and theory of art.The book is divided into five sub-themes: In the first and more fundamental part, 'The phenomenology of in-visibility', questions underlying the other four themes are sought defined or narrowed down. Here the modes of appearing/revealing or hiding of phenomena are reflected. In the second section of the book dealing with 'Language as a mode of revealing and hiding' the specific role of verbal expressions understood in a very broad sense is at the core: What is the fundamental understanding and use of language, when speaking of the ineffable? The third section about 'Human existence between visibility and invisibility' focuses on theological anthropology: its features and norms. The ambiguity of anthropological categories such as faith, rationality, imagination, memory and emotion play a prominent role in this context.Thefourth section concerning 'The manifestation of a 'beyond' in the arts' investigates transcendence in the arts. What are the theological discourses behind the religious uses of the different artistic media (i.e. images, music, liturgical inventory, architecture)? Finally in the fifth section concerning 'Visible community and invisible transcendence' one finds contributions working with the idea of 'vicarious representation'.

Book excerpt: Visibility: The Seeing of Near and Distant Landscape Features reviews the science of visibility from how to measure it quantitatively to its impacts by one of the foremost experts in the field. Carefully designed pedagogy allows a diversity of readers, from regulators to researchers to use this book to further their understanding of the field. Topics covered include the interaction of light with the atmosphere and aerosols, the transfer of light through the atmosphere especially as it relates to non-uniform haze layers, perception questions, including visibility metrics, image processing techniques for purposes of visually displaying effects of haze on scenic landscapes, visibility monitoring techniques, and the history of visibility regulatory development. - Heavily illustrated to convey the concepts introduced, then followed by more mathematical coverage of the topic - Covers all aspects of visibility, including science, social, and regulatory - Expands traditional US only coverage of visibility and scenic to global

Book The Refinement of Drivers Visibility Needs During Wet Night Conditions

Download or read book The Refinement of Drivers Visibility Needs During Wet Night Conditions written by Ronald B. Gibbons and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this project was to develop a specification for the minimum retroreflectivity of pavement markings in wet nighttime conditions. In order to establish this specification, the performance of four retroreflective pavement marking materials in wet-night conditions was evaluated. The performance of the pavement markings was evaluated by driver participants under simulated rain conditions using a similar protocol to studies that have already been performed at the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute. The performance of the markings was verified based on the participants' ability to detect the end points of the markings in both rainy and clear conditions. The conclusions from this investigation indicate the following: The materials developed over recent years show an improved performance over those tested previously. These materials provide adequate performance through improved technology and performance. The log-linear relationship found previously is functional for the data provided. Two models were developed. The model with no intercept provides a more constrictive boundary at low levels of retroreflectivity. A retroreflectivity value above 250 mcd/m2/lx provides limited return in terms of detection distance. A specification limit of 150 mcd/m2/lx will provide adequate visibility for 55 mph in dry conditions and 40 mph in wet conditions using standard dry retroreflectivity measurements, and 1 in/hr measurements for the wet conditions. This value should be the minimum maintained over the life of the marking. The retroreflectivity specification for a white and a yellow material should be equal. The rumble stripe showed a significant recovery time improvement over the other tested materials. This study recommends a minimum retroreflectivity of 150 mcd/m2/1x for white and yellow pavement markings in both dry and wet nighttime conditions. This level provides the Virginia Department of Transportation with the basis for establishing a performance-based specification for pavement markings.

Book Queer Representation Visibility and Race in American Film and Television

Download or read book Queer Representation Visibility and Race in American Film and Television written by Melanie Kohnen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the uneven history of queer media visibility through crucial turning points including the Hollywood Production Code era, the AIDS crisis of the 1980s, the so-called explosion of gay visibility on television during the1990s, and the re-imagination of queer representations on TV after the events of 9/11. Kohnen intervenes in previous academic and popular accounts that paint the increase in queer visibility over the past four decades as a largely progressive development. She examines how and why a limited and limiting concept of queer visibility structured around white gay and lesbian characters in committed relationships has become the embodiment of progressive LGBT media representations. She also investigates queer visibility across film, TV, and print media, and highlights previously unexplored connections, such as the lingering traces of classical Hollywood cinema's queer tropes in the X-Men franchise. Across all chapters, narratives and arguments emerge that demonstrate how queer visibility shapes and reflects not only media representations, but the real and imagined geographies, histories, and people of the American nation.
