Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thrilling tour of the sea's most extreme species, coauthored by one of the world's leading marine scientists The ocean teems with life that thrives under difficult situations in unusual environments. The Extreme Life of the Sea takes readers to the absolute limits of the ocean world—the fastest and deepest, the hottest and oldest creatures of the oceans. It dives into the icy Arctic and boiling hydrothermal vents—and exposes the eternal darkness of the deepest undersea trenches—to show how marine life thrives against the odds. This thrilling book brings to life the sea's most extreme species, and tells their stories as characters in the drama of the oceans. Coauthored by Stephen Palumbi, one of today’s leading marine scientists, The Extreme Life of the Sea tells the unforgettable tales of some of the most marvelous life forms on Earth, and the challenges they overcome to survive. Modern science and a fluid narrative style give every reader a deep look at the lives of these species. The Extreme Life of the Sea shows you the world’s oldest living species. It describes how flying fish strain to escape their predators, how predatory deep-sea fish use red searchlights only they can see to find and attack food, and how, at the end of her life, a mother octopus dedicates herself to raising her batch of young. This wide-ranging and highly accessible book also shows how ocean adaptations can inspire innovative commercial products—such as fan blades modeled on the flippers of humpback whales—and how future extremes created by human changes to the oceans might push some of these amazing species over the edge.

Book excerpt: A Silent Spring for oceans, written by "the Rachel Carson of the fish world" (The New York Times) Who can forget the sense of wonder with which they discovered the creatures of the deep? In this vibrant hymn to the sea, Callum Roberts—one of the world’s foremost conservation biologists—leads readers on a fascinating tour of mankind’s relationship to the sea, from the earliest traces of water on earth to the oceans as we know them today. In the process, Roberts looks at how the taming of the oceans has shaped human civilization and affected marine life. We have always been fish eaters, from the dawn of civilization, but in the last twenty years we have transformed the oceans beyond recognition. Putting our exploitation of the seas into historical context, Roberts offers a devastating account of the impact of modern fishing techniques, pollution, and climate change, and reveals what it would take to steer the right course while there is still time. Like Four Fish and The Omnivore’s Dilemma, The Ocean of Life takes a long view to tell a story in which each one of us has a role to play.

Book Conditions of Life in the Sea

Download or read book Conditions of Life in the Sea written by James Johnstone and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Conditions of Life in the Sea: A Short Account of Quantitative, Marine Biological Research The object of this book is to give a short account of the main results of modern quantitative marine biological investigations, and of the related results of hydrography and oceanography. There is at present no adequate summary of these researches in English; and although several German accounts have been published these do not seem to be very well known in this country. Already a great number of memoirs have been written, but the publications in which these have appeared are not very accessible, even in the ordinary biological libraries. Much of the work, especially that relating to the methods of plankton research, and to the hydrodynamical investigation of ocean currents, is very technical and can hardly be summarised in a book of this character. So I have referred to the most important memoirs, and from these, and the further references which they contain, the reader will be able to tap the original sources of information. Part I. of the book is rather elementary in treatment, the object being to supply an account of those facts of oceanography which are not likely to be familiar to the reader who is not specially interested in marine biological investigation. Part II. deals with the methods and results of quantitative marine biological research; and Part III. with the general conditions of life in the sea. Book The Dance of Air and Sea

Download or read book The Dance of Air and Sea written by Arnold H. Taylor and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2011-02-24 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can the tiny plankton in the sea just off Western Europe be affected by changes 6000 km away on the other side of the North Atlantic Ocean? How can a slight rise in the temperature of the surface of the Pacific Ocean have a devastating impact on amphibian life in Costa Rica? Living populations across the globe are connected by great swayings of the world's atmosphere and oceans, the largest of which is El Nino. For almost half a century, the numbers of some of the smallest animals in the North Sea have gone up and down as the Gulf Stream has moved north and south 4000 miles away at the coast of the USA. This connection has happened because the weather patterns over the North Atlantic are intertwined by a phenomenon first described by a Danish missionary in the eighteenth century, the North Atlantic Oscillation. In The Dance of Air and Sea Arnold Taylor focuses on the large-scale dynamics of the world's climate, looking at how the atmosphere and oceans interact, and the ways in which ecosystems in water and on land respond to changes in weather. He tells stories of how discoveries were made, and the scientists who made them; and he considers the crucial issues of how the discoveries aid our response to global warming.
