Ce livre s'intéresse particulièrement à la double dimension de ces sciences qui étudient à la fois le fonctionnement actuel et la reconstitution de l'histoire des systèmes vivants et planétaires. Quelles conséquences cette double dimension, fonctionnaliste et historique, a-t-elle sur les savoirs scolaires et les difficultés d'apprentissage des élèves ? L'étude, à fort ancrage épistémologique, porte notamment sur la construction par des élèves de collège et de lycée (11-18 ans) de quelques problèmes géologiques fonctionnalistes et historiques (la répartition des volcans et des séismes, la formation d'une chaîne de montagnes, l'origine de la vie sur la Terre). Leurs rapports au principe de l'actualisme, ce pont entre le présent et le passé qui organise la géologie historique depuis son émergence, et au catastrophisme sont analysés dans le cadre théorique de l'apprentissage par problématisation. Il apparaît que les élèves mobilisent instinctivement un actuatisme simpliste et un catastrophisme de circonstance et que leurs explications se limitent souvent à de petites histoires, du storytelling, comme la pensée commune a coutume d'en produire. En proposant de dépasser la tension entre sciences fonctionnalistes et sciences historiques pour une dialectique entre sciences des phénomènes et sciences des événements, l'auteure renouvelle à la fois les approches de la construction du savoir savant dans ces disciplines et les questions de leur enseignement. Cela conduit à des rapprochements avec d'autres champs disciplinaires et donne à voir des problèmes didactiques de première importance.

Organized by the REHSEIS group (Research on Epistemology and History of Exact Sciences and Scientific Institutions) of CNRS (National Center for Scientific Research), the colloquium was held from 3 to 6 April 1990 in the UNESCO building in Paris. This colloquium was an idea of Professor Roshdi Rashed who initiated this field of studies in France some years ago, and proposed "Sciences and Empires" as one of the main research programmes for the The project to organize such a colloquium was a bit REHSEIS group. of a gamble. Its subject, reflected in the title "Sciences and Empires", is not a currently-accepted sub-discipline of the history of science; rather, it refers to a set of questions which found autonomy only recently. The terminology was strongly debated by the participants and, as is frequently suggested in this book, awaits fuller clarification.
