Book Pavement Condition Surveys

Download or read book Pavement Condition Surveys written by National Research Council (U.S.). Highway Research Board and published by . This book was released on 1957 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pavement condition surveys are necessary to evaluate the effect upon pavement life and service caused by various factors such as subgrade soil of the various classifications, subgrade densification, subgrade treatments, subgrade drainage, subbase materials and methods of placing, pavement materials, pavement design, pavement construction methods, traffic, maintenance materials and methods, and climatic conditions. Pavement condition is logically measured for Portland cement concrete pavements by the condition of joints and cracks, condition of the surface, and the amount of cracking and breakage. In addition, it is logically measured for pavements of the flexible type by the amount of cracking, type of cracking, raveling, rutting, shoving, settling, bleeding, and the area and depth of patches. Skid resistance and degree of bumpiness are pavement condition factors for both rigid and flexible pavements. Various types of condition surveys are outlined and suggestions made for making them.

Book Airfield Pavement Evaluation Robert Gray Army Airfield Fort Hood Texas

Download or read book Airfield Pavement Evaluation Robert Gray Army Airfield Fort Hood Texas written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An airfield pavement investigation was performed in November 1995 at Robert Gray Army Airfield, Fort Hood, Texas, to develop information pertaining to the structural adequacy of the airfield pavements for continued use under current mission and upgrading of the pavements for mission changes. The pavement surface condition was evaluated by use of the pavement condition index (PCI) condition survey procedure, and a nondestructive evaluation procedure was used to determine the load-carrying capability of the pavements and overlay requirements for continued use of the pavements under current missions. Results of the evaluation are presented including: (a) a tabulation of the existing pavement features, (b) the results of the nondestructive tests performed using a falling weight deflectometer, (c) the PCI and rating of the surface of each pavement feature, (d) a structural evaluation and overlay requirements for rigid and flexible pavement (4,900 passes and 2,600 passes of the B-747 aircraft, respectively), (e) the pavement classification number for each pavement facility, and (f) maintenance and repair recommendations based on the structural evaluation and condition survey.

Book Evaluation of a Thin bonded Portland Cement Concrete Pavement Overlay

Download or read book Evaluation of a Thin bonded Portland Cement Concrete Pavement Overlay written by Thomas Elliott Freeman and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report discusses the performance of the Virginia Department of Transportation's first modern rehabilitation project involving a thin-bonded portland cement concrete overlay of an existing jointed concrete pavement. The performance of the rigid overlay, which was constructed in a fast-track mode to minimize lane closure time, was evaluated by detailed condition surveys conducted annually throughout a 6-year analysis period to identify, document, and monitor the occurrence of distress. The roughness of the overlay was also measured annually with an accelerometer-based inertial road profiler to permit an examination of the effects of surface deterioration on ride quality. After 6 full years of service, which included only minimal maintenance, the pavement overlay remained in good overall condition. Although the ride quality of the overlay remained virtually unchanged throughout the period, a significant increase in the occurrence of low-to-moderate-severity joint spalls, corner breaks, and to a lesser extent transverse cracks was noted during the fifth and sixth years. The extrusion of compression seals and the subsequent infiltration of water into the pavement structure probably contributed to the observed localized failure of the overlay/substrate bond in the vicinity of joints. This condition, in turn, weakened the pavement's structural capacity at panel edges and thereby resulted in the formation of corner breaks and cracks parallel with and near transverse joints. The consideration of thin-bonded concrete overlays constructed in a fast-track mode is recommended as a viable rehabilitation alternative for jointed concrete pavements that are not severely distressed. However, careful attention to joint installation and, in particular, joint maintenance is recommended for similar future rehabilitation projects.
