Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mexican War IT has been wisely remarked by a distinguished American statesman, that the commencement of the Mexican War was the opening of a new volume of American history. Nations, like individuals, are often borne along in their progress, without pausing to consider the particular acts which are to shape and control their future destiny; and perhaps there is no subject on which the public mind is less likely to act with caution and deliberation than on the momentous question of peace or war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Review of the Causes and Consequences of the Mexican War The writer is a believer in the Divine authority of the Scriptures - he acknowledges no standard of right and wrong but the Will of God, and denies'the expediency of any act which is forbidden by laws dictated by Infi nite Wisdom and Goodness. This avowal will prepare the reader to find in the following pages many Opinions not having the stamp of public approbation. Patriot ism, honor, glory, and national prosperity, are terms to which the Christian and the mere politician attach dif ferent ideas, and estimate by different standards. He who admits the authority of the Bible will not readily acknowledge that whatever is highly esteemed among men must be right, nor that what is unpopular is, of course, wrong. Book Sources for a History of the Mexican War 1846 1848 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-02-07 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sources for a History of the Mexican War, 1846-1848 Our war of 1846-48 has often been regarded as an isolated event, merely an episode in our history; and to a considerable extent so it was. We fought and we made conquests of value; but neither war nor conquest was an essential part of our national policy. We can lay our fingers upon the causes of the war one by one, and its results are equally within com pass. No foreign nation became involved, nor did serious complications of any sort grow out of the affair. In short, it was much like a small, though vigorous, New England thunderstorm, made up of local currents and a few black, tufted clouds, which overwhelms some valley with darkness, roar and flood, yet is plainly visible in its entirety from the neighboring mountain. For this reason the subject possesses a rare attractiveness for the investigator, so often baffled or embarrassed by the reach of his vistas; while at the same time, as will presently appear, certain peculiar subtleties create a special interest of precisely the opposite kind. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Timothy J. Henderson's A Glorious Defeat provide a short, accessible account of the US-Mexican War. The war that was fought between the United States and Mexico from 1846 to 1848 was a major event in the history of both countries: it cost Mexico half of its national territory, opened western North America to U.S. expansion, and brought to the surface a host of tensions that led to devastating civil wars in both countries. Among generations of Latin Americans, it helped to cement the image of the United States as an arrogant, aggressive, and imperialist nation, poisoning relations between a young America and its southern neighbors. In contrast with many current books that treat the war as a fundamentally American experience, Timothy J. Henderson's A Glorious Defeat offers a fresh perspective on the Mexican side of the equation. Examining the manner in which Mexico gained independence, Henderson brings to light a greater understanding of that country's intense factionalism and political paralysis leading up to and through the war. Also touching on a range of topics from culture, ethnicity, religion, and geography, this comprehensive yet concise narrative humanizes the conflict and serves as the perfect introduction for new readers of Mexican history.

Most of its histories can be divided into two classes. First come those written immediately after the conclusion Of peace. The authors of these painted everything red, white, and blue, and chanted songs of glory. Then come the histories written under what may be called Abolition influence. The authors Of these painted everything coal black and passed by on the other side. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Texas and the Mexican War: A Chronicle of the Winning of the Southwest The purpose of the Mexican republicans in per mitting the creation of these colonies of foreigners has not been explained any more than have the purposes of the royalists who began the work by encouraging Austin. The Spanish tradition ran counter to such a policy. If circumstantial evi dence counts for anything, the Mexican authorities had some vision of a new regime which Americans do not yet understand. One thing is certain: they had no intention to leave the colonies permanently separate from the rest of the population. Only the Spanish language was to be used in public trans actions. A colonist who married a Mexican was allowed more land than one who did not. All the laws repeated or implied the provision of the origi nal grant to Austin, which laid down as the first and principal requisite for colonists that of being Catholics or agreeing to become so. Book Mexico in Peace and War Classic Reprint

Download or read book Mexico in Peace and War Classic Reprint written by Thomas H. Russell and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mexico in Peace and War It was never intended that "Mexico in Peace and War" should be limited in scope to a mere "war book," although many months ago it was thought that war was imminent, and quite probable, before a solution of existing difficulties could be brought about, or before this volume could go to press. For several years the eyes of the civilized world have been directed toward Mexico because of the revolution of the masses against certain classes which had been fiercely waged. The American public seemed eager for details of this civil war, and such details were furnished by the daily press. Then came a demand for all kinds of information about Mexico. What seemed necessary to the situation was a popular, readable book that would embrace all the facts concerning this land of conquest, revolution and treasure. Such a history must necessarily be authentic and comprehensive. It was part of the plan that should war actually take place between the United States and Mexico ere its publication, allowance would be made in this history for the incidents and causes leading up to and into the beginning of such a war. In the event of conflict it would be only reasonable to expect that whether or not the opposing forces should be in actual conflict, or in a position of armed belligerency pending peaceful settlement, the ultimate solution would be long drawn out; and to postpone the volume for a "last word" of war developments would be to deprive the public of an immense fund of information never before issued in popular form.
