Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assesses the varying ways in which automobile assemblers in several countries of East and Southeast Asia, Europe and the Americas have sought to enhance their efficiency and flexibility in response to heightened global competition during the 1980s and early 1990s. It then explores the implications of such managerial strategies for workers and trade unions, and the responses of unions in seeking to preserve or enhance worker welfare and voice under industrial restructuring.

Book The Global Automotive Industry

Download or read book The Global Automotive Industry written by Paul Nieuwenhuis and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The automotive industry is still one of the world's largest manufacturing sectors, but it suffers from being very technology-focused as well as being relatively short-term focused. There is little emphasis within the industry and its consultancy and analyst supply network on the broader social and economic impacts of automobility and of the sector that provides it. The Global Automotive Industry addresses this need and is a first port of call for any academic, official or consultant wanting an overview of the state of the industry. An international team of specialist researchers, both from academia and business, review and analyse the key issues that make vehicle manufacturing still the world’s premier manufacturing sector, closely tied in with the fortunes of both established and newly emerging economies. In doing so, it covers issues related to manufacturing, both established practices as well as new developments; issues relating to distribution, marketing and retail, vehicle technologies and regulatory trends; and, crucially, labour practices and the people who build cars. In all this it explains both how the current situation arose and also likely future trajectories both in terms of social and regulatory trends, as the technological, marketing and labour practice responses to those, leading in many cases to the development of new business models. Key features Provides a global overview of the automotive industry, covering its current state and considering future challenges Contains contributions from international specialists in the automotive sector Presents current research and sets this in an historical and broader industry context Covers threats to the industry, including globalization, economic and environmental sustainability The Global Automotive Industry is a must-have reference for researchers and practitioners in the automotive industry and is an excellent source of information for business schools, governments, and graduate and undergraduate students in automotive engineering.

Book Industrial Competitiveness of the Auto Parts Industries in Four Large Asian Countries

Download or read book Industrial Competitiveness of the Auto Parts Industries in Four Large Asian Countries written by Richard F. Doner and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2006 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Rationalization and stabilization following the Asian financial crisis of the late 1990s combined with the expansion and liberalization of regional and global trade to create significant parts industries in China, Indonesia, and the Republic of Korea. Conventional policies of stabilization and liberalization, however, cannot fully explain growth patterns. Japan and Korea grew into major players before liberalizing trade and investment, while even after extensive liberalization Indonesia has yet to move from extensive to intensive growth. These anomalies suggest that to explain success in the auto parts industry we need to move beyond liberalization to look at policies and institutions promoting economies of scale, skill formation, quality upgrading, supplier-linkage cooperation, and innovation. In Japan, the regional and global leader, innovative assemblers led industrial development and supported key suppliers, but the government also supported diffusion of quality control techniques and new technology to small and medium enterprises, and encouraged stable employment among core employees. Korea remains weaker on both small and medium enterprise and employment fronts, but government-encouraged consolidation around a small number of business groups, an extended period of protection, and support for export promotion led to economies of scale. Liberalization of foreign investment after the financial crisis helped ameliorate the excessive statism of earlier policies and strengthened the parts industry. In China, liberalization for WTO entry, rapid expansion in demand, and strong support by local governments encouraged a wave of foreign investment in both assembly and parts. In contrast, institutional weaknesses continue to constrain development opportunities in Indonesia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

This book was released on 1992 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LE DEVELOPPEMENT DES NOUVELLES TECHNOLOGIES ET LEURS APPLICATIONS DANS L'INDUSTRIE AUTOMOBILE NE CESSENT DE METTRE L'ORGANISATION DE CETTE ACTIVITE EN QUESTION: QUE CE SOIT AU NIVEAU DU PRODUIT, DES PROCEDES, DES SECTEURS AMONTS OU AVALS. LA REUSSITE DE CERTAINS CONSTRUCTEURS AU NIVEAU MONDIAL, S'EXPLIQUE CERTES PAR UNE MAITRISE DE LA TECHNOLOGIE, MAIS AUSSI PAR UNE PARFAITE ADAPTATION DE CELLE-CI AU CONTEXTE MONDIAL ET LA PSYCHOLOGIE DU CONSOMMATEUR. SUIVANT DEUX POLITIQUES DIFFERENTES ET DANS DEUX ENVIRONNEMENTS DISTINCTS, LES EXPERIENCES DE LA COREE DU SUD ET DU BRESIL MONTRENT A QUEL POINT IL EST DIFFICILE DE REALISER L'ADAPTATION DES STRUCTURES LOCALES AUX EXIGENCES DE LA CONCURRENCE INTERNATIONALE. LA COREE, GRACE A UNE STRUCTURE PRODUCTIVE PLUS FLEXIBLE, UN ENVIRONNEMENT PLUS LIBERAL ET DES MOYENS D'ACTION QU'ELLE MAITRISE DE PLUS EN PLUS, A REUSSI DE FAIRE DE LA COOPERATION TECHNIQUE ET LA PRISE DE PARTICIPATION AVEC LES FIRMES MULTINATIONALES UN OUTIL EFFICACE DE TRANSFERT DE LA TECHNOLOGIE ET DE SON APPLICATION DANS LE TISSU INDUSTRIEL. LE BRESIL DEMEURE A UN DEGRE MOINDRE DE SOPHISTICATION DE SA TECHNOLOGIE ET EN RETARD DANS LA RESTRUCTURATION DE SON INDUSTRIE AUTOMOBILE. LES RAISONS INCOMBENT A UN CHOIX DE POLITIQUE ECONOMIQUE: PRIVILEGIER L'INSTALLATION DIRECTE DES CONSTRUCTEURS, PROTEGER L'INDUSTRIE DE LA CONCURRENCE ETRANGERE ET NEGLIGER LES ACCORDS SUR LE TRANSFERT ET L'APPRENTISSAGE DE LA TECHNOLOGIE, CONSTITUENT DES HANDICAPS ET NON DES STIMULANTS A LA COMPETITIVITE.
