Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of essays, sponsored by the Newman Association of America, serves to identify, preserve, and promote the legacy of John Henry Newman. It argues that eleven major elements of Newman’s life and work speak to us today, and, in fact, are very important resources for believers in their confrontation with the challenges of an increasingly secular world. They also resonate loudly to a church in crisis both internally and externally in its confrontation with that world. Ten authors, included among them some of the world’s most noted Newman scholars, as well as several emerging ones, address various aspects of Newman’s legacy on a host of subjects. These include the nature and challenges of faith both for believers and contemporary “nones” with no religious affiliations, an analysis of what and how we know things, particularly bearing on religious matters, the experience of conversions, the place and meaning of relationships in our search for God, especially those of family, home, and friendships, the indispensable role of the church in our drive for holiness, the nature and importance of education and its personal dimension, and the correct application of history in studying and learning from Newman’s legacy. Those who have questions and who think about these subjects, academics and non-academics alike, will find much to ponder in these essays.

Book EMERGENCE AND INTERPRETATION

Download or read book EMERGENCE AND INTERPRETATION written by Ding Weixiang and published by American Academic Press. This book was released on 2023-03-22 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mencius’ many assertions from virtue “Being what I inherently possess” to “this [virtue] is what Heaven or Nature gives to me” clearly show the basic self-consciousness of virtue in pre-Qin Confucianism and the confirmation that virtue originates from Heaven or Nature. Then, what was the reason for the Chinese “Axis Age” thinkers to unanimously trace the origin of human virtue back to Heaven or Nature and the mandate of Heaven? Of course, for them, the source of human virtue is Heaven or Nature, which means that they realized that human being was the limit of cognition. Since in their view, the problem is itself a question that transcends human cognition or that human understanding can possibly clarify both virtue itself and the source of human virtue being beyond the bounds of human knowledge. Namely, tracing back virtue to its source is a quest that transcends the capacity of human understanding. However, those who have been influenced by modern cognitive theory and who constantly explore how Confucian thought emerged as well as how it took shape, cannot give a satisfying answer. Therefore, to trace the emergence and development of Confucianism through the perspective of the survival of agency and the foundation of the survival of agency is not only my own personal interest, but also one necessary for clarifying the development of Confucianism and the legitimacy of its existence.

Book Concrete Matters

Book excerpt: During a few decades characterised by social change, optimism and dramatic political events, artists in the fast-growing cosmopolitan cities of Montevideo, Buenos Aires, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Caracas adopted and developed a new, concrete language that distanced itself from either figurative or representative imagery.Concrete Matters presents some 70 works from the mid-1930s to the 1970s by artists who explored the potential and boundaries of concretism in various ways, and with partly different intentions. It highlights the Brazilian neo-concrete movement, with artists such as Lygia Clark, Willys de Castro and Helió Oiticica, all who radically changed the notion of the work of art as a static object in the late 1950s, and also include works by Max Bill, Aluísio Carvão, Lygia Clark, Waldemar Cordeiro, Carlos Cruz-Diez, Geraldo de Barros, Willys de Castro, Gego, Judith Lauand, Raúl Lozza, Gyula Kosice, Tomás Maldonado, Juan Melé, Juan Molenberg, Hélio Oiticica, Alejandro Otero, Lygia Pape, Rhod Rothfuss, Luiz Sacilotto, Mira Schendel, Ivan Serpa, Jesús Soto, Joaquín Torres-García, Rubem Valentim, Franz Weissmann and Anatol Wladyslaw. The selection is formed around works from the Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros.Accompanies the exhibition Concrete Matters, 24 Feb - 13 May 2018, Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Sweden.Co-published with Moderna Museet.

Book On Chinese Body Thinking

Download or read book On Chinese Body Thinking written by Kuang Min Wu and published by BRILL. This book was released on 1997 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses Western philosophical tradition to make a case for a form of thinking properly associated with ancient China. The book's thesis is that Chinese thinking is concrete rather than formal and abstract, and this is gathered in a variety of ways under the symbol "body thinking." The root of the metaphor is that the human body has a kind of intelligence in its most basic functions. When hungry the body gets food and eats, when tired it sleeps, when amused it laughs. In free people these things happen instinctively but not automatically. The metaphor of body thinking is extended far beyond bodily functions in the ordinary sense to personal and communal life, to social functions and to cultivation of the arts of civilization. As the metaphor is extended, the way to stay concrete in thinking with subtlety becomes a kind of ironic play, a natural adeptness at saying things with silences. Play and indirection are the roads around formalism and abstraction. Western formal thinking, it is argued, can be sharpened by Chinese body thinking to exhibit spontaneity and to produce healthy human thought in a community of cultural variety.
