Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concrete Highways With the fall of the Roman Empire came a decline in road construe tion and for several centuries no further attempt was made to improve highways. The revival of paving came in the building of streets in the larger cities. This was followed by the improvement of the through routes between the centers of population. It was not until the latter part of the 18th century and the early part Of the lgth, that a truly scientific attempt was made at road build ing. The methods employed during that period are in use today, in slightly modified form, in our country and village roads. Book Concrete Roads and Pavements Classic Reprint

Download or read book Concrete Roads and Pavements Classic Reprint written by E. S. Hanson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concrete Roads and Pavements The first edition of this book came out just a year ago and was so well received that the first printing was sold before all the books came from the bindery. A second printing, with a few slight changes and corrections, was then put on the press and has been sold out some time ago. Hence the writer has been led to believe that there is a large demand for information on the subject of concrete roads and pavements, and he has therefore derived considerable enjoyment from the preparation of the present complete revision of the book, in the hope that by this means he may be able to add a small part to the betterment of this rapidly developing branch of the concrete industry. The book has been expanded from thirteen chapters in the original volume to twenty chapters in this revision, and from 227 pages to 338 pages. Entire new subjects have been introduced in this volume, such as Chapter XIX on the promotion of concrete roadways. Then, too, some topics which were merely given a paragraph in the original edition are now expanded into chapters. In each case it may be said, also, that the work has been brought completely down to date and that such advances in practice as have been developed during the past year are included in this volume. The book is, in large part, frankly a compilation, and the effort has been to collect into convenient handbook size everything of value which is so far known on the subject. Book Concrete Bridges and Culverts for Both Railroads and Highways Classic Reprint

Download or read book Concrete Bridges and Culverts for Both Railroads and Highways Classic Reprint written by H. Grattan Tyrrell and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concrete Bridges and Culverts, for Both Railroads and Highways Bridges of solid concrete are superior to those of any other material. They are as permanent as stone, and have a less cost. Masonry bridges and aqneducts built by the Romans are still standing, and some of them in use. A few old cast iron bridges remain, dating back a century or more, but a majority of the modern ones built of wrought iron and steel have a very limited existence. Forty years ago, steel bridges were believed to be permanent structures, but it is now well known that they do not generally last longer than from twenty to thirty years. Solid concrete bridges are superior to those in which reinforcing metal is required for resisting tensile stresses in the arch ring. Continuous water-soaking reduces the adhesion of concrete to steel by about 100 percent, and the effect of shocks and vibrations also tends to destroy the bond. It frequently occurs that cracks develop, sufficiently large to admit water, and when water and moisture reach the reinforcing metal, it is then only a few years before the metal is destroyed by rust. An old wire suspension bridge that recently failed, was examined and reported on by the writer, and it was found that failure occurred because of the rusting and breaking of the wire cables embedded in the anchorage. Book Management and Methods in Concrete Highway Construction Classic Reprint

Download or read book Management and Methods in Concrete Highway Construction Classic Reprint written by J. L. Harrison and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Management and Methods in Concrete Highway Construction The construction of a concrete pavement is a manufacturing process in which labor and machinery are used to handle, treat, and place in final position those materials which are the necessary ingredients of the pavement. The contractor's problem is to obtain a profit from this work. He desires to do good work. Commonly he is willing to follow any reasonable course of action in order to secure good work. Nevertheless, his primary objective is profit. This he must have or he must go out of business. But the question of whether an operation will yield a good profit or net a serious loss is largely dependent on the skill with which the labor he employs and the equipment he owns are used. For this reason, the management of production and the use of appropriate production methods are of paramount importance to contractors and to their superintendents. A discussion of these matters should also be of value to designing engineers in that a more complete knowledge of the elements which affect cost should enable them to give a broader consideration to these matters when design and specifications are under consideration. Construction engineers and inspectors also will find a knowledge of the principles of production management and of good construction practice of assistance, for, though their primary objective is quality, a knowledge of the principles and the practices of efficient management should make it a simpler matter to secure the desired quality without endangering the contractor's profit. This discussion of the management of production and of appropriate methods has, then, been prepared primarily for contractors and their superintendents, and for engineers who are dealing with the various phases of concrete pavement construction. On this account, it has been possible to eliminate many of the details which would be desirable in a book especially prepared for the instruction of men unfamiliar with the technique of this work. Book The Expansion and Contraction of Concrete and Concrete Roads Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Expansion and Contraction of Concrete and Concrete Roads White and the earlier investigators made tests on the _change in length of neat cement and mortar with specially designed micro meters on very small specimens, White's being only 4 inches in length. Obviously it would be impo-ssible'to use such small test pieces as these to determine the expansion and contraction of concrete containing coarse aggregates, and the type adopted was a column 8 inches square and 5 feet high. The column form of specimen was used to permit the free expansion of one end, in this way preventing friction from affecting the accuracy of the measurements. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concrete in Highway Construction: A d104-Book for Highway Engineers and Supervisors The development of manufacture and of agriculture, which require proper transportation facilities not only on the railroads but to the points of ship ment and distribution, has stimulated a widespread interest and called national attention to the necessity for better pavements and for highway constructions of a more permanent and durable character. This demand, as well as the necessity for reducing the expense of repairs incident to automobile traffic, has brought to the forefront the use of concrete to produce permanent construction, not only for sidewalks and pavements, but for highway structures, such as bridges, retaining walls, culverts, and the many smaller details, the repairs to which are continually vexing the City and Town Engineer and the Highway Commissioner. The purpose of the present volume, then, is to present to those in charge of street and highway construction and maintenance, examples of work which have been satisfactorily performed, and, further, to give drawings and designs made especially for The atlas Portland Cement Company, either as reproductions of existing structures, from drawings and photographs kindly furnished by the local authorities, or as original designs prepared by expert engineers at the request of the atlas Portland Cement Company. Book Asphalt Construction for Pavements and Highways

Download or read book Asphalt Construction for Pavements and Highways written by Clifford Richardson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Asphalt Construction for Pavements and Highways: A Pocketbook for Engineers, Contractors and Inspectors The increase in recent years in the amount of sheet asphalt pavement which is being laid in our cities and the extent of the asphaltic concrete and asphaltic broken stone surfaces which are being constructed on our country highways to resist the destructive action of motor ve hicles, has created a demand for highway engineers, con tractors, and inspectors, who are skilled in this work, far in excess of the supply. The result has been that many have entered these fields who do not realize the im portance of careful attention to details which is necessary to insure complete success in this line of work. With a view to supplying the necessary information in regard to these details to the persons who have been mentioned, this pocket-book has been prepared with the hope that it will do something toward insuring better work in the future than has been done in some cases during recent years by inexperienced contractors and engineers, and supervised by inexperienced inspectors. Its form has been selected in order that it may be readily carried in the coat pocket, for reference on all occasions, something that cannot well be done with a larger book with stiff covers.
