Book Fracture of Non Metallic Materials

Download or read book Fracture of Non Metallic Materials written by K.P. Herrmann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the lectures of the 5th Advanced Seminar on Fracture Mechanics (ASFM 5) held at the Joint Research Centre, Ispra, on 14-18 October 1985. The series of the ASFMs is one of the two main regularly scheduled international events sponsored by the European Group on Fracture (EGF) , alternating with the European Conferences of Fracture (ECFS). Whereas ECFs are held in a different place on even years (the last. ECF6,was in Amsterdam in June 1986), ASFMs are hosted at the JRC Ispra on odd years. This establishment belonging to the Commission of the European Communities performs research work of common interest to the EC Member countries. One of the activities of the JRC-Ispra is the organization of Ispra-Courses aiming at the transfer of knowledge and the strengthening of exchanges and ties between European scientific workers. ASFMs are designed to give an advanced level treatment in selected areas of fracture mechanics. Previous ASFMs had been devoted to elastic-plastic fracture mechanics and to subcritical crack growth due to fatigue, stress corrosion and creep. In the early stages of preparation of ASFM5 it was decided to concentrate on a new theme, the fracture phenomena and fracture mechanics of non-metallic materials. Whereas fracture mechanics started with the study of glass by Griffith, its later developments centered predominantly on metallic alloys. However, in recent years non-metallic materials have found increasing uses and correspondingly efforts have been made to develop testing and prediction methods for these materials.

Book Fatigue and Fracture of Non metallic Materials and Structures

Download or read book Fatigue and Fracture of Non metallic Materials and Structures written by Andrea Spagnoli and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-06-23 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mechanics of fracture and fatigue have produced a huge body of research work in relation to applications to metal materials and structures. However, a variety of non-metallic materials (e.g., concrete and cementitious composites, rocks, glass, ceramics, bituminous mixtures, composites, polymers, rubber and soft matter, bones and biological materials, and advanced and multifunctional materials) have received relatively less attention, despite their attractiveness for a large spectrum of applications related to the components and structures of diverse engineering branches, applied sciences and architecture, and to the load-carrying systems of biological organisms. This book covers the broad topic of structural integrity of non-metallic materials, considering the modelling, assessment, and reliability of structural elements of any scale. Original contributions from engineers, mechanical materials scientists, computer scientists, physicists, chemists, and mathematicians are presented, applying both experimental and theoretical approaches.

Book excerpt: India can be a more favorable and attractive industrial area for the development of granite industry now a days and in future. India has been known for decades for its stone industry and it is one of the biggest exporters of natural stone in the world. India uses natural stone as building material more than many other countries. The researcher explores whether Indian granite industries can increase their exports to world countries and how likely it is that stone imports will increase there. Each country has unique soil and granite stones. Granite from India is very different compared to world granite and it cannot be copied. The unique appearance of Indian granite is definitely a competitive advantage that should be considered when planning export strategies.

Book Developments in fiber reinforced polymer FRP composites for civil engineering

Download or read book Developments in fiber reinforced polymer FRP composites for civil engineering written by D. Lau and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-05-15 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) has been a practical alternative construction material for replacing steel in the construction industry for several decades. However, some mechanical weaknesses of FRP are still unresolved, which limit the extensive use of this material in civil infrastructure. In order to mitigate the disadvantage of using FRP, the concept of hybridization is delivered here. The advantages of hybrid structural systems include the cost effectiveness and the ability to optimize the cross section based on material properties of each constituent material. In this chapter, two major applications of hybrid FRP composites are discussed: (1) the internal reinforcement in reinforced concrete (RC) structures, and (2) the cables in long-span cable-stayed bridges. In order to improve the flexural ductility of FRP-reinforced concrete (FRPRC) beam, the additional steel longitudinal reinforcement is proposed such that the hybrid FRPRC beams contain both FRP and steel reinforcement. In order to improve the vibrational problem in pure FRP cables used in bridge construction, an innovative hybrid FRP cable which can inherently incorporate a smart damper is proposed. The objective of this chapter is to deliver an up-to-date review of hybrid FRP composite structures, including both the industrial practice and the research in academia. The advantages of using hybrid FRP composites for construction will also be described with experimental support. It is hoped that the reader will appreciate the concept of hybridization, which leads to the efficient utilization of all constituent materials in a bonded system.
