Book Concordance to the Precanonical and Canonical New Testament

Download or read book Concordance to the Precanonical and Canonical New Testament written by Markus Vinzent and published by Narr Francke Attempto Verlag. This book was released on 2023-07-03 with total page 573 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the beginnings of Early Christianity we know of only two collections of Christian texts to which the title "New Testament" was given - one from around the middle of the second century, credited to Marcion of Sinope, and the other well known created from around the time of Irenaeus of Lyon towards the end of the same century. For the first time, the new Concordance provides the full Greek list of over 5.500 words and their individual appearances in both these collections in a comparative way. This allows for the discovery of parallels and differences between the collections and their relation. In addition questions of priority, historical, social and theological can be answered, based on their lexicography.

Book The Canon of the New Testament

Download or read book The Canon of the New Testament written by Bruce M. Metzger and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 1997-03-06 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides information from Church history concerning the recognition of the canonical status of the several books of the New Testament. Canonization was a long and gradual process of sifting among scores of gospels, epistles, and other books that enjoyed local and temporary authority - some of which have only recently come to light among the discoveries of Nag Hammadi. After discussing the external pressures that led to the fixing of the limits of the canon, the author gives sustained attention to Patristic evidence that bears on the development of the canon not only in the West but also among the Eastern Churches, including the Syrian, Armenian, Georgian, Coptic, and Ethiopian. Besides considering differences as to the sequence of the books in the New Testament, Dr Metzger takes up such questions as which form of text is to be regarded as canonical; whether the canon is open or closed; to what extent a canon should be sought within the canon; and whether the canon is a collection of authoritative books or an authoritative collection of books.

Book excerpt: This volume explores the creation of the collection now known as the New Testament. While it is generally accepted that it did not emerge as a collection prior to the late second century CE, a more controversial question is how it came to be. How did the writings that make up the New Testament—The Gospels, the so-called Praxapostolos (Acts and the canonical letters), the Epistles of Paul, and Revelation—make their way into the collection, and what do we know about their possible historical origins, and in turn the emergence of the New Testament itself? The New Testament as we know it first became recognisable in more detail in Irenaeus of Lyon towards the end of the second century CE. However, questions remain as to how and by whom was it redacted. Was it a slow, organic process in which texts written by different authors, members of different communities and in various places, grew together into one book? Or were certain writings compiled on the basis of an editorial decision by an individual or a group of editors, revised for this purpose and partly harmonised with each other? This volume sketches out the complex development of the New Testament, arguing that key second century scholars played an important role in the emergence of the canonical collection and putting forward the possible historical origins of the text’s composition. Christ’s Torah: The Making of the New Testament in the Second Century is of interest to students and scholars working on the New Testament and anyone with an interest in early Christianity more broadly.
