Book The EU and the Proliferation of Integration Principles under the Lisbon Treaty

Download or read book The EU and the Proliferation of Integration Principles under the Lisbon Treaty written by Francesca Ippolito and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-09-27 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty has brought about a proliferation of “integration principles”. In addition to the environmental integration principle, which has been part of the EU legal framework for some time, the Lisbon Treaty introduced the principles of gender equality integration, social policy integration, non-discrimination integration, consumer protection integration as well as animal welfare integration. Furthermore, a general principle of integration policy objectives is contained in Article 7 TFEU, requiring that the Union must ensure consistency between its policies and activities, taking all relevant policy requirements listed under the TFEU into account in the adoption of any legislative measure. These integration principles must be pursued, or at least taken into account, when decisions are being taken in almost any area of EU policy-making. However, there is considerable uncertainty regarding the normative implications of the various integration principles as well as their legal value and practical relevance for EU policymaking. This book addresses the implications of the proliferation of sectorial integration principles and the introduction of a universal requirement of policy consistency in terms of the division of competences between the Union and the Member States as well as the scope for judicial review of the EU legislative process. In particular, it explores whether the introduction of various integration principles has led to an extension of Union competences and whether it has limited the scope for judicial review by extending the discretionary power of the Union institutions.

Book Gender and Corruption

Download or read book Gender and Corruption written by Helena Stensöta and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-27 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The link between gender and corruption has been studied since the late 1990s. Debates have been heated and scholars accused of bringing forward stereotypical beliefs about women as the “fair” sex. Policy proposals for bringing more women to office have been criticized for promoting unrealistic quick-fix solutions to deeply rooted problems. This edited volume advances the knowledge surrounding the link between gender and corruption by including studies where the historical roots of corruption are linked to gender and by contextualizing the exploration of relationships, for example by distinguishing between democracies versus authoritarian states and between the electoral arena versus the administrative branch of government—the bureaucracy. Taken together, the chapters display nuances and fine-grained understandings. The book highlights that gender equality processes, rather than the exclusionary categories of “women” and “men”, should be at the forefront of analysis, and that developments strengthening the position of women vis-à-vis men affect the quality of government.

Book Council of Europe Highlights 2019

Download or read book Council of Europe Highlights 2019 written by Council of Europe and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As this edition of the Council of Europe Highlights was being finalised, our societies were facing unprecedented medical, social and economic challenges due to the coronavirus crisis. ■ The Council of Europe’s task is to assist our member states in making sure that the measures they take to fight the pandemic do not unduly risk the protection of our common European values of democracy, rule of law and human rights. ■ We are reminded of the foundation of these values this year which marks the 70th anniversary of the European Convention on Human Rights. 2019 – the year covered by these Highlights – marked the 70th anniversary of the Treaty of London in 1949 when the Council of Europe was founded. Since then, Europe has undergone tectonic shifts of its political and economic landscape, not least with the emergence and enlargement of the European Union. ■ The Council of Europe has maintained its own distinct role and place in the international institutional architecture. However, as many of the activities highlighted in this document demonstrate, the Council of Europe and the European Union now work together closely and in a complementary way in the interest of Europe’s citizens. Foreword by Daniel Höltgen (Director of Communications, Spokesperson for the Secretary General) This publication presents the work carried out in 2019 by the different bodies and sectors of the Council of Europe, highlighting its particular strengths and achievements.
