Book A Concise Text Book of Organic Chemistry

Download or read book A Concise Text Book of Organic Chemistry written by C. G. Lyons and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-06-06 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Concise Text-Book of Organic Chemistry is a handy guide for chemistry students preparing for Advanced Level certificates. The nature of organic chemistry, compared with that of inorganic chemistry, is basically the chemistry of carbon. The book focuses on the arrangements and changes of the atoms inside the carbon molecules. The molecular formulas of organic compounds are therefore studied, including alkanes and their derivatives known as aliphatic or fatty acids, as well as the hydrocarbons of the benzene series and derivatives known as the aromatic compounds. The aliphatic amines as derivatives of ammonia resulting from the substitution of the hydrogen atoms by alkyl groups are described. The formula for methane, although at present is convenient for general purposes, is shown to be not a true representative of the actual arrangement in which four H radicals are grouped around the carbon atom. Castor oil, linseed, and other drying oils are also examined in terms of their glyceride (of other long chain unsaturated acids) content. Carbohydrates, divided as monosaccharides, polysaccharides, and glycosides, are discussed as to their empirical composition. The several methods and reagents for synthesizing organic compounds are explained, using the simple aliphatic organic compounds as an example. The aromatic series of organic compounds, such as the benzene series of hydrocarbons, and the aromatic sulfonic acids, phenols, and ethers are then analyzed. This book is suitable for students of organic chemistry and for those preparing for tests in the General Certificate of Education and for the Ordinary National Certificate. Readers related to agricultural, medical, pharmaceutical, and technological and technical courses can find this guide relevant.

Book Organic Chemistry at a Glance

Download or read book Organic Chemistry at a Glance written by Laurence M. Harwood and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 2004-09-24 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the diverse teaching backgrounds of first year university students, the highly detailed traditional organic chemistry textbook does not provide an easily digestible presentation of the very basic information required by many students to begin their study of this exciting subject. Based on the highly successful and student friendly “at a glance” approach, with integrated, self contained double page spreads of text and graphics, Organic Chemistry at a Glance provides concise organic chemistry notes for students studying chemistry and related courses at undergraduate level. Graphical presentation of information is central to the book and facilitates the rapid assimilation and understanding of the basic concepts, principles and definitions of organic chemistry. It is not intended to replace existing organic chemistry textbooks, but to provide a tool with which the student can quickly, economically and confidently acquire, regularly review and revise the basic facts that underpin organic chemistry.

Book Systematic Nomenclature of Organic Chemistry

Download or read book Systematic Nomenclature of Organic Chemistry written by D. Hellwinkel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hellwinkel gives a short and general introduction to the systematic nomenclature of organic compounds. On the basis of carefully selected examples it offers simple and concise guidelines for the generation of systematic compound names as codified by the IUPAC rules. Besides the most common compound classes important special areas such as cyclophanes, carbohydrates, organometallic and isotopically modified compounds and stereochemical specifications are dealt with. In cases where there is not yet a finalised set of IUPAC rules, possibilities for logical and desirable extensions of existing rules are outlined. Likewise, deviations from Chemical Abstracts and Beilstein index names are noted, if significant. The German version (4th edition) is meanwhile a longseller.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the very best things about organic chemistry is actually doing experimental work at the beneh. This applies not only at the profes sionallevel but also from the earliest stages of apprenticeship to the craft as a student. The fascination sterns from the nature of the sub ject itself, with its vast array of different types of reaction and its al most infinite variety of different chemical compounds. Each reaction and each new compound pose their own particular problems to chal lenge the skill and ingenuity of the chemist, whether working in a first-year teaching la bora tory or at the frontiers of research. This book is intended to provide basic guidance in the essential experimental techniques used in a typical undergraduate course. It gives concise coverage of the range of practical skills required, from first-year level when students may have no previous experience, up to final-year level when students are usually involved in more complex and dem an ding experimental work in supervised research projects. Our objective was to produce a handbook of techniques that could be used with a variety of practical courses throughout a student's whole period of study. Those who run practical courses generally have strong feelings about what particular experiments or exercises are appropriate for their own students, and it is rare that a book of experiments suitable for one department is acceptable to another.
