As on his three previous albums of Mozart piano concertos with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, these performances of the Concerto No. 19, K. 459, and Concerto No. 27, K. 595, are brilliant without being flashy. Piano and orchestra seem to pursue a common goal rather than coming into conflict -- which doesn't mean that drama, emotion, or high spirits are in any way lacking. The sprightly march rhythms of K. 459 could hardly be more delightful, and the intricate counterpoint of the concerto's finale also benefits from the sense of equality among the musicians. The 27th, Mozart's final piano concerto, is often considered a work of nostalgic resignation. True, it is neither boisterous nor celebratory, but it is far from melancholy. Goode's performance emphasizes the joy, though not unclouded, that Mozart was still abundantly capable of in the last year of his life. In both concertos, the crystalline brilliance of the pianist's ornamentation and the jaunty crispness of his articulation bring the music irresistibly to life. The orchestra's woodwind soloists stand out with particularly beautiful playing, and the whole ensemble -- making democratic decisions, as always, rather than submitting to the will of any conductor -- makes an irreplaceable contribution to the refined yet exciting performances to be savored on this album.
