Book A Survey of Twenty first century Concert Etudes for Piano

Download or read book A Survey of Twenty first century Concert Etudes for Piano written by Bo Kyung Hwang and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document examines the development of the piano etude as a genre in the twenty-first century and how individual contemporary etudes engage with the genre’s historical traditions. The study proceeds from thick descriptions of the stylistic characteristics as well as physical challenges in the following concert etudes: Nimrod Borenstein’s Piano étude Op. 66, Marc-André Hamelin’s 12 Études in All the Minor Keys, Nos. 2, 4, 7, 8, and 11, Pascal Dusapin’s Études Nos. 5, 6, and 7, Unsuk Chin’s 12 Études Nos. 2, 3, 4, and 5, Douglas Boyce’s Études for Piano, No. 1, Lowell Liebermann’s Four Etudes on Songs of Robert Franz, Carter Pann’s The Piano’s 12 Sides, as well as selections from David Rakowski’s etudes involving extended techniques, namely No Stranger to Our Planet, No. 50, Palm de Terre, No. 69, Chase, No. 71, Not, No. 74, Ecco Eco, No. 7, F This, No. 82, Toyed Together, No. 88, You Blew It, No. 92, and Knocksville, No. 94. In order to contextualize the musical rhetoric of contemporary concert etudes, this study begins with an historical overview of the piano etude as a genre, focusing primarily on twentieth-century etudes in chapter one. This chapter discusses how and why twentieth-century etudes tend to be less technically virtuosic in comparison to nineteenth-century etudes, gradually discarding older conventions through applications of atonality, irregular rhythms, looser formal structures, experiments with sonority, extended techniques, and syntheses of jazz, folk, pop, and electronic stylistic influences. The main body of this study are two chapters describing contemporary etudes. Chapter two reconsiders recent piano etudes that incorporate traditional pianistic idioms, while chapter three addresses etudes that employ idiosyncratic, non-conventional idioms that discard nineteenth- and even twentieth-century compositional practices. Following an overview of this body of literature concerning performance practices for contemporary current etudes, the final chapter provides interpretive strategies and practical suggestions for performing twenty-first-century concert etudes. Finally, the appendices integrate further suggestions alongside commentary provided by the original composers as well as some of their original commissioning performers or collaborators.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This essential collection of 100 piano études is divided into 15 units that survey the technical challenges at the early intermediate, intermediate, and late intermediate levels. The early units review technical issues that students experience at the elementary levels, such as five-finger patterns and articulations. The later units introduce more difficult technical challenges that prepare students for advanced repertoire, such as playing ornamentation, octaves, and large chords. Each unit contains between five and ten études written by master composers from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Contemporary periods. Within each unit, the études are arranged in order of difficulty. Each piece appears in its original form; notes have not been added or removed. The composers' original dynamics, tempo marks, phrase indications, and articulations have been preserved. Ornamentation is realized in footnotes. Added measure numbers provide easy reference, and editorial suggestions for fingering and pedaling have been provided. A concise foreword discusses technique at the intermediate levels. Two indexes are included: one by unit and technical skill, and another by level and composer. Unit listing: * Five-Finger Patterns * Articulation * Coordination between the Hands * Scales * Triads, Inversions, and Broken Chords * Double Notes * Left-Hand Development * Velocity * Arpeggios * Finger and Hand Independence * Repeated Notes * Accompaniment Patterns * Ornamentation * Octaves * Four- and Five-Note Chords Titles: * Alla Tarantella (from 12 Études), Op. 39, No. 2 (MacDowell) * Étude in A Minor ("Arabesque") (from 25 Easy and Progressive Studies), Op. 100, No. 2 (Burgmüller) * Étude in B-flat Major (from 25 Melodious Studies), Op. 108, No. 10 (Schytte) * Étude in C Major (from Practical Method for the Pianoforte), Op. 249, No. 65 (Köhler) * Étude in F Major (from The First Steps of the Young Pianist), Op. 82, No. 39 (Gurlitt) * Étude in G Major (from 25 Elementary Studies), Op. 176, No. 20 (Duvernoy) * Étude in D Minor ("Warrior's Song") (from 25 Melodic Studies), Op. 45, No. 15 (Heller) * Étude in G Minor (from Training of the Left Hand), Op. 89, Book II, No. 6 (Berens) * Exercise in C Major (from Étude for the Pianoforte), Op. 39, No. 1 (Cramer) * Little Étude (from Album for the Young), Op. 68, No. 14 (Schumann) * Maria (romanza sin palabras) (from Six Expressive Studies) (Granados) * Menuetto (from First Term at the Piano), Sz. 53, No. 16 (Bartók) and many more!

Book Concert Etude for Trumpet and Piano

Download or read book Concert Etude for Trumpet and Piano written by Alexander Goedicke and published by Alfred Publishing Company. This book was released on 1999-10-01 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Concert Etude is written along fairly "Classical Lines," Which is not too difficult to understand since Goedicke is one of the greatest living exponents of the "Western Tradition" in Russia. The word "etude" which ordinarily connotes a dry-as-dust study is qualified with the word "concert" by the composer. It follows along the lines of the chopin etudes for piano which have always been used both as study and concert material. The opening theme has the light, airy character of a Mozart rondo or Mendelssohn scherzo. The secondary theme, which appears at (5), is in direct contrast and has broad, flowing lines. The tonguings should all be soft and the player should take short breaths so that all the notes will appear connected. B-Flat Trumpet (cornet) and piano. (MCA Music)
