Book Concerning the Spiritual in Art and Painting in Particular An Updated Version of the Sadleir Translation

Download or read book Concerning the Spiritual in Art and Painting in Particular An Updated Version of the Sadleir Translation written by Wassily Kandinsky and published by . This book was released on 2014-07-09 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2014 Reprint of 1947 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. An updated version of the Sadleir translation, with considerable re-translation by Francis Golffing, Michael Harrison and Ferdinand Ostertag. Published in 1912, Kandinsky's book defines three types of painting; impressions, improvisations and compositions. While impressions are based on an external reality that serves as a starting point, improvisations and compositions depict images emergent from the unconscious, though composition is developed from a more formal point of view. Kandinsky compares the spiritual life of humanity to a pyramid-the artist has a mission to lead others to the pinnacle with his work. The point of the pyramid is occupied by few great artists. It is a spiritual pyramid, advancing and ascending slowly even if it sometimes appears immobile. During decadent periods, the soul sinks to the bottom of the pyramid; humanity searches only for external success, ignoring spiritual forces. This edition contains a new introduction by Nina Kandinsky, his widow, providing Kandinsky's own corrections and additions for a new edition that never appeared in his lifetime. She has also written for this edition a memoir of Kandinsky's development.

Book The Writings of Robert Motherwell

Download or read book The Writings of Robert Motherwell written by Robert Motherwell and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-11-10 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Motherwell (1915-1991), one of the leading American Abstract Expressionist painters, was also a theorist and exponent of the movement. His writing articulated the intent of the New York school —Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Adolph Gottlieb, Franz Kline, Arshile Gorky, and others—during a period when their work was often reviled for its departure from traditional representation. As founder of the Documents of Modern Art series (later renamed the Documents of Twentieth-Century Art), Motherwell gave modern artists a voice at a time when very few people understood their theories or work. This authoritative new edition of the artist's writings about art includes public lectures, essays, and interviews. Impeccably edited, with an informative introductory essay and rigorous annotation, it is illustrated with black-and-white images that elucidate Motherwell's writings.

Book Ancient Violence in the Modern Imagination

Download or read book Ancient Violence in the Modern Imagination written by Irene Berti and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-10-15 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collected essays in this volume focus on the presentation, representation and interpretation of ancient violence – from war to slavery, rape and murder – in the modern visual and performing arts, with special attention to videogames and dance as well as the more usual media of film, literature and theatre. Violence, fury and the dread that they provoke are factors that appear frequently in the ancient sources. The dark side of antiquity, so distant from the ideal of purity and harmony that the classical heritage until recently usually called forth, has repeatedly struck the imagination of artists, writers and scholars across ages and cultures. A global assembly of contributors, from Europe to Brazil and from the US to New Zealand, consider historical and mythical violence in Stanley Kubrick's Spartacus and the 2010 TV series of the same name, in Ridley Scott's Gladiator, in the work of Lars von Trier, and in Soviet ballet and the choreography of Martha Graham and Anita Berber. Representations of Roman warfare appear in videogames such as Ryse: Son of Rome and Total War, as well as recent comics, and examples from both these media are analysed in the volume. Finally, interviews with two artists offer insight into the ways in which practitioners understand and engage with the complex reception of these themes.

  • Author : Joseph Masheck

Download or read book Faith in Art written by Joseph Masheck and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-06-15 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metaphysical thought has been excluded from much of the discourse on modern art, especially abstract painting. By connecting ideas about faith with the initiators of abstract painting, Joseph Masheck reveals how an underlying religiosity informed some of our most important abstract painters. Covering Wassily Kandinsky, Kazimir Malevich, Piet Mondrian, and El Lissitzky, Masheck shows how 'revealed religion' has been an underlying but fundamental determinant of the thinking and practice of abstract painting from its very originators. He contextualizes their art within some of the historical moments of the early 20th century, including the Russian revolution and the Stalinist period, and explores the appeal of certain themes, such as the Passion of Christ. A radical new theorization of the influence of religion over visual art, Faith in Art asks why metaphysics has been eliminated from the discussion where it might have something to say. This is a new way of thinking about a hundred years of abstract painting.

Book Whitman Between Impressionism and Expressionism

Download or read book Whitman Between Impressionism and Expressionism written by Erik Ingvar Thurin and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Whitman between Impressionism and Expressionism is the first comprehensive and systematic study of Whitman's language experiment in relation to his artistic and philosophical purposes. Author Erik Thurin's focus is determined by the discovery that his linguistic innovations can be described and interpreted in terms of a dual approach closely resembling what is now called impressionism and expressionism. A number of theoretical and quasi-theoretical remarks in the 1855 preface to Leaves of Grass and the poetry itself suggest that this approach is deliberate. Thurin postulates that it must be related to his determination to be "the poet of the body" and "the poet of the soul," impressionism representing a tendency to passively and objectively record incoming sense data, expressionism the urge to transform and use them in "the efflux of the soul." Whitman is, in fact, prophetically adumbrating a new ideal of health and power, a modern personality that is to balance body and soul. It is autobiography anthropologically conceived." "Discourse analysis allows Thurin to conclude that Whitman's poems and long sections of poems fall into three categories: (1) pure impressionism, (2) pure expressionism, and (3) a combination of both."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
