This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concerning Some Headaches and Eye Disorders of Nasal Origin My interest in the subject matter of these pages commenced in 1894 when my friend Dr. Arthur E. Ewing began what was to be a convincing argument, that the asthenopics delineated in Chapter I were really not eye cases but nose cases of some kind not yet imderstood. It is therefore easy to understand a deep sense of gratitude and obligation on my part for not only the novel idea but the material for the study and determination of the underlying facts. It resulted in my becoming a rhinologist and abandoning internal medicine for which I had made elaborate (ten years) preparation. Very early were added the influence of my friends Dr. M. H. Post and Dr. John Green to the argument of Dr. A. E. Ewing, all renowned ophthalmologists. From then until now my interest in the nasal factors of headaches and eye lesions has been deep and constant. During these years much has been written on this dual subject, a complete bibliography of which would serve little or no purpose for the present text, aside from the labor of supplying it. The suppurative nasal diseases have been learnedly presented by Dr. Ludwig Gruenwald in Die Lehre der Naseneiterungen 1892, and later elaborated and much valuable information added thereto by Dr. Marcus Hajek in Die entziindliche Erkrankungen der NehenJioelen der Nase, 1899.To Doctor Hajek as my teacher - 1896 to 1898 - I owe a great debt of gratitude. I soon learned however that the cessation of the nasal suppuration was not always the cure of the case by any means. In the effort to solve the questions for such patients the tissues removed from their noses were submitted in vain to many pathologists, some of them being the most renowned of their day. They remained a closed secret until 1909 when I presented the specimens to Dr. Jonathan Wright. He at once read the story from the tissues presented by virtue of his learning as a rhinologist combined with that of the pathologist (a rare combination). Book Pathophysiology of Headaches

Download or read book Pathophysiology of Headaches written by Messoud Ashina and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-04-14 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a detailed overview of the current state of knowledge regarding the pathophysiology of both primary headaches – migraine, tension-type headache (TTH), and cluster headache – and the very important and frequent type of secondary headache, medication overuse headache (MOH). After an introductory chapter describing relevant neuroanatomy and vascular anatomy, the evidence gained from animal models regarding the pathophysiology of migraine and the other primary headaches is reviewed. Knowledge of the genetic component in the different types of headache is then examined with reference to recent evidence, for example regarding the implication of the trigeminovascular system and cortical spreading depression in migraine. Detailed information is provided on insights into primary headaches from imaging studies, including functional magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography and on their neurophysiology and biochemistry. A further series of important chapters describe present knowledge of the pathophysiology of each specific type of headache and consider future directions. Written by acknowledged experts in their fields from Europe and the United States, clinicians and students will find Pathophysiology of Headaches to be an excellent source of up-to-date information on why patients experience headaches. In addition, it will be of value for pain researchers investigating the underlying mechanisms of headache.

Book Invasive Fungal Rhinosinusitis

Download or read book Invasive Fungal Rhinosinusitis written by Gauri Mankekar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Incidence of invasive fungal sinusitis has been increasing over the years. The understanding of its pathophysiology has improved with newer serological tests and diagnostic methods helping in earlier diagnosis and reducing patient morbidity. It was believed earlier that invasive fungal sinusitis is seen only in immune compromised patients but clinical reports suggest otherwise. More anti-fungal drugs are being added to improve incidence of patient survival. This book aims to compile all practical information about invasive fungal sinusitis into a single volume. Therefore, busy clinicians would not have to perform exhaustive literature studies to diagnose invasive fungal sinusitis. The book aims to provide an overview of diseases which could be mistaken for invasive fungal sinusitis and discuss how the management is different. Book sections consist of clinical, microbiological, serological, pathological, radiological and pharmacological features of the disease and its management. Each section is important in today’s context as it dynamically alters the management of the patient. Early clinical suspicion and rapid microbiological, pathological and radiological diagnosis with aggressive treatment with surgical debridement and medical therapy leads to favorable outcomes.

Book A Case Based Guide to Eye Pain

Download or read book A Case Based Guide to Eye Pain written by Michael S. Lee and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diagnosing a patient with unexplained ocular pain can be time-consuming and difficult, but taking an anatomic approach and excluding causes along the way can aid in the diagnosis. This book provides the reader with a systematic evaluation plan for these cases, written and edited by leaders in the field. A Case-Based Guide to Eye Pain is written for both ophthalmologists and neuro-ophthalmologists since there are not enough neuro-ophthalmologists to treat the number of patients with unexplained ocular pain and general ophthalmologists are having to take on the diagnosis and treatment of these patients. Organized in an easy-to-use manner, each case covers the following key elements: the chief complaint, history of the present illness, the examination, assessment and plan, follow-up, alternate perspective, summary points, and key references. Tables are also available to help the reader rapidly sort through cases that may apply to a sign, symptom, historical feature, diagnostic test or treatment option. This allows the practitioner who has a patient with a particular concern to use the tables to identify a case discussion. Additionally, A Case-based Guide to Eye Pain includes an appendices with the general approach to eye pain and anatomy of the trigeminal pathway and its relation to eye pain.
