Book excerpt: "Concerning Christian Liberty & Letter of Martin Luther to Pope Leo X" book has a beautiful glossy cover and a blank page for the dedication. "Among those monstrous evils of this age with which I have now for three years been waging war, I am sometimes compelled to look to you and to call you to mind, most blessed father Leo. In truth, since you alone are everywhere considered as being the cause of my engaging in war, I cannot at any time fail to remember you; and although I have been compelled by the causeless raging of your impious flatterers against me to appeal from your seat to a future council - fearless of the futile decrees of your predecessors Pius and Julius, who in their foolish tyranny prohibited such an action - yet I have never been so alienated in feeling from your Blessedness as not to have sought with all my might, in diligent prayer and crying to God, all the best gifts for you and for your see."

Book Concerning Christian Liberty

Book excerpt: The third of Martin Luther's major reforming treatises of 1520. Early in the course of the Reformation (1520) Martin Luther penned a trilogy of foundational documents addressing the Church, the Nobility and the Christian life. This document concerning the Christian life expounds the famous paradox: "A Christian man is the most free lord of all, and subject to none; a Christian man is the most dutiful servant of all, and subject to every one." Martin Luther's treatise Concerning Christian Liberty is one of the most powerful and concise presentations of the Christian life ever written - a true gem among Reformation writings. Here you will find the essence of Reformation spirituality distilled into a guide for practical, biblical living. With the bold authority of a true prophet, Luther directs his message to the average Christian in clear, simple language. The doctrine of justification by grace through faith in Christ is the heart and soul of Luther's message, founded upon a firm conviction in the authority of Scripture. Included is Luther's direct letter and treatise to Pope Leo X on his religious beliefs and a bruising analysis of the Catholic church. Luther strongly objected to making a new law of the forms and urged the retention of other good liturgies. While advocating Christian liberty in liturgical matters, he also spoke out in favor of maintaining and establishing liturgical uniformity among those sharing the same faith in a given area. "Concerning Christian Liberty" is a wonderful piece on Luther's balance between the Catholic Church and his teachings on liberty. "Our Lord has written the promise of resurrection, not in books alone, but in every leaf in springtime." ― Martin Luther

Book The Freedom of the Christian

Download or read book The Freedom of the Christian written by Martin Luther and published by New Reformation Publications. This book was released on 2020-10-15 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Freedom of the Christian was Martin Luther's first public defense of the doctrine of justification by grace through faith on account of Christ alone. Luther's explosive rediscovery of the Gospel of Jesus Christ shattered the Church of Rome's foundation of works, which considered good works a part of salvation instead of a result of it. Here, Luther constructed a rich theology that relies on the full power of the Gospel, which not only grants saving faith but also nurtures that faith through good works done in the freest service. This new abridged translation from Adam Francisco, featuring a brief essay from Scott Keith, leaves no doubt that the Christian, secure in Christ, is truly free—free from sin, death, and the devil, and free to serve their neighbor.

It developed the concept that as fully forgiven children of God, Christians are no longer compelled to keep God's law; however, they freely and willingly serve God and their neighbors. Luther also further develops the concept of justification by faith. In the treatise, Luther stated, "A Christian is a perfectly free lord of all, subject to none. A Christian is a perfectly dutiful servant of all, subject to all."

Book Concerning Christian Liberty

Book excerpt: Concerning Christian Liberty sometimes also called "A Treatise on Christian Liberty" or "On the Freedom of a Christian" was the third of Martin Luther's major reforming treatises of 1520. In the treatise, Luther, seminal figure in the Protestant Reformation, develops the concept of Justification by faith. He wrote the Ninety-five Theses against the contemporary practice of the Roman Catholic Church with respect to indulgences. The Theses were quickly reprinted, translated, and distributed throughout Germany and Europe. His theology challenged the authority and office of the Pope. His refusal to renounce all of his writings resulted in his excommunication. The indulgence controversy set off by the Theses was the beginning of the Reformation.Concerning Christian Liberty is followed by The Ninety-five Theses and four letters of Martin Luther addressed to: the Archbishop Albrecht of Mainz, John Staupitz, Professor of Sacred Theology and Pope Leon X.Excerpt: "Hence a right faith in Christ is an incomparable treasure, carrying with it universal salvation and preserving from all evil, as it is said, "He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned" (Mark XVI. 16). Isaiah, looking to this treasure, predicted, "The consumption decreed shall overflow with righteousness. For the Lord God of hosts shall make a consumption, even determined (verbum abbreviatum et consummans), in the midst of the land" (Isa. X. 22, 23). As if he said, "Faith, which is the brief and complete fulfilling of the law, will fill those who believe with such righteousness that they will need nothing else for justification." Thus, too, Paul says, "For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness" (Rom. X. 10).""45. Christians are to be taught that he who sees a man in need, and passes him by, and gives [his money] for pardons, purchases not the indulgences of the pope, but the indignation of God."
