Book Conceptual Performance

Download or read book Conceptual Performance written by Nick Kaye and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-22 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conceptual Performance explores how the radical visual art that challenged material aesthetics in the 1960s and 1970s tested and extended the limits, character and concept of performance. Conceptual Performance sets out the history, theoretical basis, and character of this genre of work through a wide range of case studies. The volume considers how and why principal modes and agendas in Conceptual art in the 1960s and 1970s necessitated new engagements with performance, as well as expanded notions of theatricality. In doing so, this book reviews and challenges prevailing histories of Conceptual art through critical frameworks of performativity and performance. It also considers how Conceptual art adopted and redefined terms and tropes of theatre and performance: including score, document, embodiment, documentation, relic, remains, and the narrative recuperation of ephemeral work. While showing how performance has been integral to Conceptual art’s critiques of prevailing assumptions about art’s form, purpose, and meaning, this volume also considers the reach and influence of Conceptual performance into recent thinking and practice. This book will be of interest to scholars and students of theatre, performance, contemporary art, and art history.

Book The State of Art Performance and Conceptual 1

Download or read book The State of Art Performance and Conceptual 1 written by Andy Laffan and published by Bare Hill Publishing. This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A snapshot of current contemporary art practice, 58 artworks from 17 performance and conceptual artists in this anthology of new and established artists. This is the forth book in The State of Art, art book series and seeks to explore some of the concepts, ideologies and extreme lengths that today's contemporary artists are taking to push the boundaries. In the past few years the fields of conceptual art and performance art have grown in interest and complexity, introducing new ideas to the practice of contemporary art. Both fields have their origins in the early 1960's when attitudes to what could be considered art were beginning to shift. In essence, conceptual art is work in which the ideas involved in the formulation of the work take precedence over the materials used to create them. Leading exponents of conceptual art such as Joseph Kosuth began to challenge the notion that artists create commodities or trophies of wealth by creating taxonomical works that challenged both the classification and existence of objects. In performance art, the body of the artist and other participants takes centre stage either in public places, art galleries or more traditional performance spaces such as theatres. Performances can utilise new media technology such as film, digital graphics and the Internet but are always comprised of four main elements; time, space, the performer and the relationship between the performer and their audience.

Book How can conceptual content be social and normative and at the same time be objective

Download or read book How can conceptual content be social and normative and at the same time be objective written by Andrea Clausen and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-05-02 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Andrea Clausen intends to reconcile Kripke's point according to which conceptual content has to be considered as being constituted by social, normative practice - by a process of mutual assessments - with the view that the content of empirical assertions has to be conceived as objective. She criticizes approaches that explicate content-constitutive practice in non-normative terms, namely in terms of sanctioning behavior (Haugeland, Pettit, Esfeld). She also rejects a pragmatist reading of Heidegger that proceeds from thoroughly normative but pre-conceptual practice. She develops and defends a particular reading of an approach that conceives normative, conceptually articulated practice - giving and asking for reasons - as primitive (Brandom, McDowell).

Book Mathematical Principles of Human Conceptual Behavior

Download or read book Mathematical Principles of Human Conceptual Behavior written by Ronaldo Vigo and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-10-03 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability to learn concepts lies at the very core of human cognition, enabling us to efficiently classify, organize, identify, and store complex information. In view of the basic role that concepts play in our everyday physical and mental lives, the fields of cognitive science and psychology face three long standing challenges: discovering the laws that govern concept learning and categorization behavior in organisms, showing how they inform other areas of cognitive research, and describing them with the mathematical systematicity and precision found in the physical sciences. In light of these theoretical and methodological shortcomings, this volume will introduce a set of general mathematical principles for predicting and explaining conceptual behavior. The author’s theory is based on seven fundamental constructs of universal science: invariance, complexity, information, similarity, dissimilarity, pattern, and representation. These constructs are joined by a novel mathematical framework that does not depend on probability theory, and derives key results from conceptual behavior research with other key areas of cognitive research such as pattern perception, similarity assessment, and contextual choice. The result is a unique and systematic unifying foundation for cognitive science in the tradition of classical physics.

Book Intentional Conceptual Change

Download or read book Intentional Conceptual Change written by Gale M. Sinatra and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-01-30 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together a distinguished, international list of scholars to explore the role of the learner's intention in knowledge change. Traditional views of knowledge reconstruction placed the impetus for thought change outside the learner's control. The teacher, instructional methods, materials, and activities were identified as the seat of change. Recent perspectives on learning, however, suggest that the learner can play an active, indeed, intentional role in the process of knowledge restructuring. This volume explores this new, innovative view of conceptual change learning using original contributions drawn from renowned scholars in a variety of disciplines. The volume is intended for scholars or advanced students studying knowledge acquisition and change, including educational psychology, developmental psychology, science education, cognitive science, learning science, instructional psychology, and instructional and curriculum studies.

Book Expanding the Conceptual Boundaries of Work Effort

Download or read book Expanding the Conceptual Boundaries of Work Effort written by Timur Erim and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-20 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, companies are more than ever dependent on a highly motivated workforce and hard-working employees. The purpose of this book is to expand the conceptual boundaries of work effort (WE) in order to gain critical insights into what makes people work hard. In spite of the acknowledged importance of WE, the concept was hitherto weakly understood, inconsistently defined, and lacked a clear conceptualization due to a lack of theoretical and empirical research. At theoretical level, this dissertation enhances the understanding of the WE concept, notably with respect to its antecedents. At practical level, the refined understanding will increase the leaders’ ability to impact and manage their employees’ WE levels.

Book Core Knowledge and Conceptual Change

Download or read book Core Knowledge and Conceptual Change written by David Barner and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We acquire concepts such as "atom," "force," "integer," and "democracy" long after we are born; these concepts are not part of the initial cognitive state of human beings. Other concepts like "object," "cause," or "agent" may be present early in infancy--if not innately. Processes of change occur throughout our conceptual development, which prompts two key questions: Which human concepts constitute innate, core knowledge? How do humans acquire new concepts, and how do these concepts change in development? Core Knowledge and Conceptual Change provides a unique theoretical and empirical introduction to the study of conceptual development, documenting key advances in case studies, including ground-breaking science on human representations of language, objects, number, events, color, space, time, beliefs, and desires. Additionally, it explores how humans engage in moral reasoning and causal explanation: Are humans born good and tainted by an imperfect world, or do we need to teach children to be moral? Could a concept like "freedom" be woven into the human soul, or is it a historical invention, constructed over generations of humans? Written by an eminent list of contributors renowned in child development and cognitive science, this book delves widely, and deeply, into the cognitive tools available at birth that are repurposed, combined, and transformed to complex, abstract adult conceptual representations, and should be of interest to developmental psychologists, linguists, philosophers, and students of cognitive science.

Book Expanding the Numerical Central Conceptual Structure

Download or read book Expanding the Numerical Central Conceptual Structure written by Laura Christine Bofferding and published by Stanford University. This book was released on 2011 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In working with integers, students have difficulties that may extend into middle school and even adulthood. However, even young children can display insights into negative numbers well before receiving formal instruction. Using a pre-test, instruction, post-test design, this study explores how 61 first graders reason about negative number properties and operations and how their understanding changes depending on the instruction they receive. Results of the study indicate that children build on their existing whole number understanding to develop a central conceptual structure for integers. Furthermore, the process by which they extend their numerical central conceptual structure differs among students; their initial schemas, together with the form of the integer instruction, influence how they reason about and solve integer addition and subtraction problems. These results highlight the need to revisit the placement, duration, and content of integer instruction in curricula.
