Book Conceptual Models and Recommendations for Monitoring Riparian Plant Communities

Download or read book Conceptual Models and Recommendations for Monitoring Riparian Plant Communities written by Gregory Podniesinski and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-08-06 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Park Service Inventory and Monitoring Program within the Eastern Rivers and Mountains Network (ERMN) has identified a number of vital signs to monitor the health of terrestrial and aquatic systems. Riparian plant communities are one of fourteen vital signs identified by the ERMN for long-term ecological moniroting. The purpose of this report is to provide background information on these communities for the five riverine parks included within ERMN: Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River (UPDE), Delaware Water Gap National Recreational Area (DEWA), Bluestone National Scenic River (BLUE), Gauley River National Recreation Area (GARI), and New River Gorge National River (NERI), for use in developing a monitoring program for riparian plant communities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Clean Water Act (CWA) requires that wetlands be protected from degradation because of their important ecological functions including maintenance of high water quality and provision of fish and wildlife habitat. However, this protection generally does not encompass riparian areasâ€"the lands bordering rivers and lakesâ€"even though they often provide the same functions as wetlands. Growing recognition of the similarities in wetland and riparian area functioning and the differences in their legal protection led the NRC in 1999 to undertake a study of riparian areas, which has culminated in Riparian Areas: Functioning and Strategies for Management. The report is intended to heighten awareness of riparian areas commensurate with their ecological and societal values. The primary conclusion is that, because riparian areas perform a disproportionate number of biological and physical functions on a unit area basis, restoration of riparian functions along America's waterbodies should be a national goal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until the mid 1970's only minimal effort has been directed at monitoring the vegetation resources in riparian areas. Since that time considerable attention and research have been directed toward gaining a better understanding of the vegetation on these areas. This increased attention has been due mainly to recognition of the important sociological and economic values these areas provide to society in general.

Book Guide to Effective Monitoring of Aquatic and Riparian Resources

Download or read book Guide to Effective Monitoring of Aquatic and Riparian Resources written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This monitoring plan for aquatic and riparian resources was developed in response to monitoring needs addressed in the Biological Opinions for bull trout (U.S. Department of the Interior, Fish and Wildlife Service 1998) and steelhead (U.S. Department of Commerce, National Marine Fisheries Service). It provides a consistent framework for implementing the effectiveness monitoring of aquatic and riparian resources within the range of the Pacific Anadromous Fish Strategy (PACFISH) and the Inland Fish Strategy (INFISH). The primary objective is to evaluate the effect of land management activities on aquatic and riparian communities at multiple scales and to determine whether PACFISH/INFISH management practices are effective in maintaining or improving the structure and function of riparian and aquatic conditions at both the landscape and watershed scales on Federal lands throughout the upper Columbia River Basin. A list of attributes thought to be important in defining aquatic and riparian habitat conditions and their relationship with listed species were identified. The list of attributes was then translated into measurable criteria and compiled to form sampling protocols for both stream channel parameters (Part II) and vegetation parameters (Part III). These sampling methods were tested for variability, and the results are documented in two other publications "Testing Common Stream Sampling Methods for Broad-Scale, Long-Term Monitoring." (Archer and others 2004) and "The Repeatability of Riparian Vegetation Sampling Methods: How Useful Are These Techniques for Broad-Scale Monitoring?" (Coles-Ritchie and others, in preparation). "

Book Effectiveness Monitoring for the Aquatic and Riparian Component of the Northwest Forest Plan

Download or read book Effectiveness Monitoring for the Aquatic and Riparian Component of the Northwest Forest Plan written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Aquatic and Riparian Effectiveness Monitoring Plan (AREMP) for the Northwest Forest Plan is intended to characterize the ecological condition of watersheds and aquatic ecosystems. So to determine the effectiveness of the Northwest Forest Plan to meet relevant objectives, this report presents the conceptual foundation of options for use in pilot testing and implementing an effectiveness monitoring program for aquatic and riparian systems. The base program would evaluate status and trends of watershed, stream, and riparian conditions by using decision-support models. Although the focus of AREMP is on characterizing ecosystem status and trend, implementing it will also supply information that will be useful in determining causal relations to help explain those trends.
