Book Genetic Algorithms as a Tool for Phased Array Radar Design

Download or read book Genetic Algorithms as a Tool for Phased Array Radar Design written by Jon A. Bartee and published by . This book was released on 2002-06-01 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States Navy needs creative ways to design multi-function phased array radars. This thesis proposes that Genetic Algorithms, computer programs that mimic natural selection to arrive at innovative solutions to complex problems, would be particularly well suited to this task. The ability of a Genetic Algorithm to properly predict the behavior of an array antenna with randomly located elements was examined with encouraging results through the construction and measurement of a test array. Comparison of test data to Genetic Algorithm and Method of Moments calculations showed significant qualitative agreement in the antenna test patterns of a thin, randomly distributed array. Areas of disagreement between the test article pattern and the calculated ones were traced to systematic errors in the anechoic chamber and alignment error during antenna positioning. The final experiment to demonstrate beam steering was not completed due to lack of time and poor response of mechanical phase shifters. Despite the inability to demonstrate beam steering, the early experiments demonstrate the significant potential for using Genetic Algorithms for complex shipboard phased array radar antenna design.

Book Advanced Array Systems Applications and RF Technologies

Download or read book Advanced Array Systems Applications and RF Technologies written by Nicholas Fourikis and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2000-05-31 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advanced Array Systems, Applications and RF Technologies adopts a holistic view of arrays used in radar, electronic warfare, communications, remote sensing and radioastronomy. Radio frequency [RF] and intermediate frequency [IF] signal processing is assuming a fundamental importance, owing to its increasing ability to multiply a system's capabilities in a cost-effective manner. This book comprehensively covers the important front-end RF subsystems of active phased arrays, so offering array designers new and exciting opportunities in signal processing. This book: * provides an up to date record of existing systems from different applications * explores array systems under development * bridges the gap between textbook coverage of idealized phased arrays and practical knowledge of working phased arrays * recognises the significance of cost to the realization of phased arrays * discusses future advances in the field that promise to deliver even more affordable arrays ['intelligent' or self-focussing/-cohering arrays] Engineers and scientists in the radar and RF technology industry will welcome the detailed description of array elements, polarisers, T/R modules and beamformers in Advanced Array Systems, Applications and RF Technologies. This book is also appropriate for postgraduate and advanced undergraduate students in electronic engineering, and for technical managers, researchers and students in the fields of radioastronomy and remote sensing. This book is a volume in the Signal Processing and its Applications series, edited by Richard Green and Truong Nguyen.

Book ADAPTIVE PHASED ARRAY RADAR

Download or read book ADAPTIVE PHASED ARRAY RADAR written by Theodore Mairson and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the results of a 12-month study program to investigate the design of an adaptive phased-arry radar (APAR) using digital techniques. The studies have been aimed at defining the problems which must be solved in developing APAR, and have produced a number of fundamental results. In particular, a straightforward mathematical model has been formulated to describe the conceptual framework of an adaptive phased-array radar in unambiguous fashion. It is concluded that a digital approach to APAR is economical and effective. It is recommended that the study be continued and that the continuation should include a coordinated demonstration and simulation. (Author).

Book Active Phased Array Radar Analysis

Download or read book Active Phased Array Radar Analysis written by Victor A. Micheli and published by . This book was released on 1996-09-01 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A phased array antenna can electronically steer the direction of the antenna beam almost instantaneously. In an Active Phased Array Radar (APAR), this capability is used to allow the system to multiplex its time between many different functions; the primary functions are search and target tracking. Potentially, the APAR can be designed based on the task it is performing, such that any savings in radar time in meeting the requirement of one task allow that time to be devoted beneficially to other tasks. The primary goal of this research is to investigate the performance assessment and improve the techniques for control of an Active Phased Array Radar performing the tracking function. In order to reliably and efficiently track targets, a MS. Excel 5.0 Spread Sheet program is implemented so that tracking range must be rapidly changed. With this program we can explore the many degrees of freedom that future APAR's will bring, such as adaptable update rate, antenna beamwidth, transmitted power, frequency, etc.
