Book Design Methodologies for Space Transportation Systems

Download or read book Design Methodologies for Space Transportation Systems written by Walter Edward Hammond and published by AIAA. This book was released on 2001 with total page 906 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation "Design Methodologies for Space Transportation Systems is a sequel to the author's earlier text, "Space Transportation: A Systems Approach to Analysis and Design. Both texts represent the most comprehensive exposition of the existing knowledge and practice in the design and project management of space transportation systems, and they reflect a wealth of experience by the author with the design and management of space systems. The text discusses new conceptual changes in the design philosophy away from multistage expendable vehicles to winged, reusable launch vehicles and presents an overview of the systems engineering and vehicle design process as well as systems trades and analysis. Individual chapters are devoted to specific disciplines such as aerodynamics, aerothermal analysis, structures, materials, propulsion, flight mechanics and trajectories, avionics and computers, and control systems. The final chapters deal with human factors, payload, launch and mission operations, safety, and mission assurance. The two texts by the author provide a valuable source of information for the space transportation community of designers, operators, and managers. A companion CD-ROM succinctly packages some oversized figures and tables, resources for systems engineering and launch ranges, and a compendium of software programs. The computer programs include the USAF AIRPLANE AND MISSILE DATCOM CODES (with extensive documentation); COSTMODL for software costing; OPGUID launch vehicle trajectory generator; SUPERFLO-a series of 11 programs intended for solving compressible flow problems in ducts and pipes found in industrial facilities; and a wealth of Microsoft Excel spreadsheet programs covering thedisciplines of statistics, vehicle trajectories, propulsion performance, math utilities,

Book Bringing Policy Into Space Systems Conceptual Design

Download or read book Bringing Policy Into Space Systems Conceptual Design written by Annalisa Lynn Weigel and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Cont.) The analysis techniques presented in this thesis for assessing and insuring policy robustness can be applied as early as the conceptualization phase of system architecting and design, and the earlier they are applied in the process, the greater the benefits that can be derived. As the architecture and system design solidify, time and opportunities are lost to tailor a system for policy robustness.

Book Hypersonic Conceptual Design Tool Comparison

Download or read book Hypersonic Conceptual Design Tool Comparison written by James G. Wnek and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The many iterations needed to explore a design space in the conceptual design process preclude the use of time-consuming RANS CFD for all but a few flight conditions. This research focuses on identifying the level of fidelity needed to adequately predict the aerothermodynamic characteristics of hypersonic vehicles. Three tools with differing levels of fidelity - CBAERO, Cart3D, and Kestrel - were used to analyze the Generic Hypersonic Vehicle (GHV) at the design condition of Mach 5.85 and an off-design condition of Mach 4.5. The results are representative of the different design tools but are not definitive due to the mesh size in Kestrel being limited by the available computational resources. The results obtained show a large difference in the unstart threshold predicted by inviscid and viscous CFD: 21° vs 11.75° degrees for Mach 5.85 and 14.5° vs 6.5° for Mach 4.5. Despite that difference, all three methods showed reasonable agreement for CL, CD, and CM across the entire range. The medium-fidelity method, Cart3D, was also capable of matching Kestrel's mass capture below the unstart threshold. The heat flux from the reference temperature method with Cart3D overestimated the heat flux on the bottom surface and underestimated heat flux on the top surface compared to Kestrel. At low angles of attack it appears to provide a heat flux estimate with a natural factor of safety, but it risks leading to overdesigning at higher angles of attack. The high-fidelity method, Kestrel, only showed significant differences from the lower fidelity methods in the unstart threshold, L/D, mass capture after unstarting, and heat flux at high angle of attack.

Book Integrated Design for Space Transportation System

Download or read book Integrated Design for Space Transportation System written by B.N. Suresh and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book addresses the overall integrated design aspects of a space transportation system involving several disciplines like propulsion, vehicle structures, aerodynamics, flight mechanics, navigation, guidance and control systems, stage auxiliary systems, thermal systems etc. and discusses the system approach for design, trade off analysis, system life cycle considerations, important aspects in mission management, the risk assessment, etc. There are several books authored to describe the design aspects of various areas, viz., propulsion, aerodynamics, structures, control, etc., but there is no book which presents space transportation system (STS) design in an integrated manner. This book attempts to fill this gap by addressing systems approach for STS design, highlighting the integrated design aspects, interactions between various subsystems and interdependencies. The main focus is towards the complex integrated design to arrive at an optimum, robust and cost effective space transportation system. The orbital mechanics of satellites including different coordinate frames, orbital perturbations and orbital transfers are explained. For launching the satellites to meet specific mission requirements, viz., payload/orbit, design considerations, giving step by step procedure are briefed. The selection methodology for launch vehicle configuration, its optimum staging and the factors which influence the vehicle performance are summarized. The influence of external, internal and dynamic operating environments experienced by the vehicle subsystems and the remedial measures needed are highlighted. The mission design strategies and their influence on the vehicle design process are elaborated. The various critical aspects of STS subsystems like flight mechanics, propulsion, structures and materials, thermal systems, stage auxiliary systems, navigation, guidance and control and the interdependencies and interactions between them are covered. The design guidelines, complexity of the flight environment and the reentry dynamics for the reentry missions are included. The book is not targeted as a design tool for any particular discipline or subsystem. Some of the design related equations or expressions are not attempted to derive from the first principle as this is beyond the scope of this book. However, the important analytical expressions, graphs and sketches which are essential to provide in-depth understanding for the design process as well as to understand the interactions between different subsystems are appropriately included.

Book A Conceptual Design Study of a Commercial Hypersonic Air Transport

Download or read book A Conceptual Design Study of a Commercial Hypersonic Air Transport written by Prajakta Govande and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hypersonic flight has the potential of improving travel times and making the world a smaller place. This study presents a conceptual design of an aircraft intended for a point-to-point long-range hypersonic trip at Mach 5, cruising at an altitude of 29 km (95,000 ft). This design is based on existing technologies, powered by an air breathing ramjet engine. Comparative calculations for performance and volume requirements from hydrocarbon, liquid hydrogen and liquid methane fuels are made. Aerodynamic analysis of the wing and fuselage to support this flight design is performed. Ultimately, an aircraft concept design intended to carry 100 passengers, weighing 213,188 kg, and consuming approximately 41,317 L of hydrocarbon fuel per hour to enable this flight is presented. A need for higher fidelity analysis in areas of propulsive and aerodynamic performance is expressed. Recommendations for further research areas are stated in the conclusion.
