Book Classical Vaisesika in Indian Philosophy

Download or read book Classical Vaisesika in Indian Philosophy written by ShashiPrabha Kumar and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-02 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vaisesika is one of the six systems of Hindu philosophy. It represents a pluralistic realism and is usually held to be an atomistic, metaphysical theory. This book explores the basic tenets of the Vaisesika classical school of Indian philosophy from a new perspective. It argues that it reveals an epistemological formulation of its own, which was diminished due to later developments in the history of Indian philosophical tradition. Focusing on the principles of knowable objects and the processes of knowing as propounded by the Vaisesika school of Indian Philosophy, the book offers a fuller appreciation of the theories. Providing a balanced approach by examining earliest available material in the original sources of Vaisesika and concentrating on the epistemological pattern adopted therein, it presents an authentic and comprehensive understanding of Vaisesika concepts. This is the first introductory sourcebook in English for the authentic study of Vaisesika, and is of use to students and scholars of World Religion and Philosophy.

Book The Nyaya Theory of Knowledge

Download or read book The Nyaya Theory of Knowledge written by Satischandra Chatterjee and published by Motilal Banarsidass. This book was released on 2016-01-01 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a system of realism, the Nyëya deserves special study to show that Idealism was not the only philosophical creed of ancient India. This book is an attempt to give a complete account of the Nyëya theory of knowledge in comparison with the rival theories of other systems, Indian and Western, and critical estimation of its worth. Though theories of knowledge of the Vedënta and other schools have been partially studied in this way by some, there has as yet been no such systematic, critical and comparative treatment of the Nyëya epistemology, The importance of such a study of Indian realistic theories of knowledge can scarcely be overrated in this modern age of Realism.

Book Classical Indian Philosophy of Mind

Download or read book Classical Indian Philosophy of Mind written by Kisor Kumar Chakrabarti and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2016-03-22 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines psycho-physical dualism as developed by the Nyāya school of Indian philosophy. Dualism is important to many world religions which promote personal immortality and to morality which promotes free will. For the Nyāya, the self is a permanent, immaterial substance to which non-physical internal states like cognition belong. This view is challenged by other Indian schools, especially the Buddhist and Cārvāka schools. Chakrabarti brings out the connections between the Indian and the Western debates over the mind-body problem and shows that the Nyāya position is well developed, well articulated, and defensible. He shows that Nyāya dualism differs from Cartesian dualism and is not vulnerable to some traditional objections against the latter. A brief discussion of the Sāṃkhya and the Advaita theories of the self and the critique of these views from the Nyāya standpoint are included, as well as a discussion of a classical Nyāya causal argument for the existence of God. The appendix contains an annotated translation of selected portions of Udayana's masterpiece, Ātmatattvaviveka (Discerning the Nature of the Self.)

Book Classical Indian Philosophy

Download or read book Classical Indian Philosophy written by Peter Adamson and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Adamson and Jonardon Ganeri present a lively introduction to one of the world's richest intellectual traditions: the philosophy of classical India. They begin with the earliest extant literature, the Vedas, and the explanatory works that these inspired, known as Upanisads. They also discuss other famous texts of classical Vedic culture, especially the Mahbhr=ar=ata and its most notable section, the Bhagavad- G=ita, alongside the rise ofBuddhism and Jainism. This opening section emphasizes the way that philosophy was practiced as a form of life in search of liberation from suffering. From there, Adamson and Ganeri move on to the explosion of philosophicalspeculation devoted to foundational texts called 'sutras,' discussing such traditions as the logical and epistemological Ny=aya school, the monism of Advaita Ved=anta, and the spiritual discipline of Yoga. The final section charts further developments within Buddhism, highlighting Nag=arjuna's radical critique of 'non-dependent' concepts and the no-self philosophy of mind found in authors like Dign=aga, and within Jainism, focusing especially on its 'standpoint' epistemology. Adamson and Ganerithen conclude by considering much-debated question of whether Indian philosophy may have influenced ancient Greek philosophy and the impact that this area of philosophy on later Western thought. Unlikeother introductions that cover the main schools and positions, consider philosophical themes such as non-violence, political authority, and the status of women, while also covering textual traditions typically left out of overviews of Indian thought, like the C=arv=aka school, Tantra, and aesthetic theory.

Book The Spirit of Indian Philosophy

Download or read book The Spirit of Indian Philosophy written by Nikunja Vihari Banerjee and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-10-13 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1975 The Spirit of Indian Philosophy provides a systematic overview of Indian philosophy. The book is divided into four major parts dealing with Indian epistemology, Indian metaphysics, Indian ethics, and Indian philosophy of religion. It makes a departure from usual method of investigating Indian philosophy by dealing with its different schools individually and separately. It discusses themes like sources of cognition; nature and criterion of true cognition; problem of error; materialism; realism; dualism; Indian theories of causation; reflective morality; the ethics of non-violence; Indian atheism and Indian religion of God, to argue that the usual conception of Indian philosophy in general as religious, spiritualistic and pessimistic is contrary to the fact, that the doctrine of Karma, transmigration and rebirth, strictly speaking is incompatible with the Indian ways of thinking and in deed is an imposition upon them ab extra. This is an essential read for scholars and students of Indian philosophy.
