L'outil radar qui a été développé est un système à saut de fréquence Ultre-Large Bande. C'est un type spécial de GPR (radar à pénétration de sol) qui délivre des images radar à haute résolution du proche sous-sol. La combinaison d'une bande de fréquence ultra-large (ULB) et d'un traitement du signal à ouverture synthétique permet d'atteindre une résolution spatiale de moins de 10 cm, même dans une configuration "éloignée" où les antennes sont séparées du sol de plusieurs dizaines de centimètres. L'utilisation initiale du système est la détection de mines et le radar est spécialement optimisé pour cette application qui a été étudiée dans notre laboratoire ONERA. Dans un premier temps, nous évaluons les pertes qui sont subies par les ondes électromagnétiques lorsqu'elles se propagent dans le sol après avoir passé en revue les différents modèles de permittivité des sols trouvés dans la littérature. Le deuxième chapitre développe en détail la méthode de traitement d'ouverture synthétique pour le radar subsurface, qui est originale en prenant en compte les aspects champ proche, ULB et propagation dans le sol. Les formes temporelle et fréquentielle de l'algorithme SAR pour GPR sont expliquées. Puis nous développons un modèle de signal radar pour les objets enfouis, basé sur l'optique physique. Ce modèle donne de bons résultats quand il est appliqué à des mines. Les résultats sont comparés à ceux donnés par un calcul exact utilisant les équations de Maxwell. Nous traitons aussi la réalisation de l'outil de mesure, avec la spécification et la caractérisation d'antennes ULB. Le traitement du signal, dévolu à l'augmentation de la résolution et la diminution du niveau d'artefact provenant de l'interface air-sol est décrit. Des mesures, faites sur le site de test du TNO (Pays-Bas) montrent cairement la possibilité de détecter des mines antichar (fréquences de 500 MHz à 5 GHz) et même des mines antipersonnel affleurantes en augmentant la bande de fréquence jusqu'à 8 GHz. En conclusion, ce travail a permis des avancées significatives dans le domaine de la détection de mines par radar, et pourrait avoir des retombées dans un domaine génie civil.
