Book excerpt: Un système de téléopération est composé principalement d'un bras-maître que peut conduire un opérateur, d'un environnement où se trouve un bras-esclave qui effectue la tâche et d'une interface entre les environnements esclave et maître. Dans les systèmes téléopérés, l'opérateur humain tient une position prépondérante dans la boucle de commande : il peut exécuter un rôle de superviseur de la mission mais aussi intervenir à tout instant en cas de problème au niveau du site esclave ; il doit donc être en symbiose avec le système qui lui permet de rester en contact avec le télérobot. Pour ce faire, il utilise une interface entre le dispositif à surveiller et lui-même. Le choix du type d'interface est crucial. L'objectif de cette thèse est de recenser les différents problèmes d'interfaçage spécifiques à la téléopération, d'en déduire des solutions qui seront appliquées au niveau de l'I.H.M.. La solution retenue est l'interface adaptative. Le premier chapitre est consacré à la présentation de la téléopération ce qui donne une base pour les chapitres suivants. Les besoins en interfaçage sont présentés et différentes solutions permettant de les satisfaire sont précisées. Le deuxième chapitre s'intéresse à la classification des interfaces homme-machine dites intelligentes. Cette taxonomie permettra de valider le choix qui sera effectué dans le chapitre suivant. Il aborde également les différentes règles d'ergonomie à appliquer au niveau de toute interface, spécifiant les critères principaux à intégrer. Dans le troisième chapitre, nous présentons les concepts associés au type d'interface choisi : l'interface adaptative. La différence entre adaptativité et adaptabilité est spécifiée et les différentes conditions et modèles à définir sont précises. Nous montrons aussi l'importance de l'utilisation de la fusion d'information dans notre formalisme. Le choix des informations pertinentes ainsi que l'évaluation des questionnaires en sont des exemples. Le quatrième chapitre débute par une étude sur les représentations possibles de la mission à effectuer, puis présente la notion d'adaptativité par rapport à la mission par l'intermédiaire des facteurs de sécurité et de pertinence. Le cinquième chapitre concerne l'adaptativité par rapport à l'opérateur. Il aborde les notions de modélisation et de critères de classification de l'opérateur humain (utilisateur de l'interface). Ces techniques d'adaptativité utilisent des notions de logique floue et sont implémentées sur notre interface, TELEMAQUE 2 qui sera présentée dans le sixième et dernier chapitre.

In fact, this process is very old. In older industries such the food and agricultural, this technique has been extensively used. An example of this is the production of pork sausages and Roquefort cheese. Pharmaceutical industry could make extensive use of SSF in the production of secondary metabolites of many kinds and development in this direction is soon expected.

Upadhyay is working as Head, Dairy Cattle Physiology Division at National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal (India). He graduated in Veterinary Sciences and obtained his PhD degree in Animal Physiology. His area of recent research is climate change, stress, and environmental physiology. His major research accomplishment is on climate change impact assessment of milk production and growth in livestock. His work also involves studying methane conversion and emission factors for Indian livestock and use of IPCC methodology of methane inventory of Indian livestock. Heat shock protein-70 expression studies in cattle and buffaloes are also done in his lab. Draught animal power evaluation, fatigue assessment, work-rest cycle and work limiting factors form the highlights of his work. Studies on partitioning of heat loss from skin and pulmonary system of cattle and buffaloes and electrocardiographic studies in cattle, buffalo, sheep and goat are also undertaken in his lab. He has more than 75 research papers, four books and several book chapters to his credit. Technologies developed and research done by him include methodology of methane measurement: open and closed circuit for cattle and buffaloes; inventory of methane emission from livestock using IPCC methodology; livestock stress index: thermal stress measurement based on physiological functions; and draught power evaluation system and large animal treadmill system. He received training in Radio-nuclides in medicine at Australian School of Nuclear Technology, Lucas heights, NSW, Australia in 1985 and Use of radioisotopes in cardiovascular investigations at CSIRO, Prospect, NSW, Australia, during 1985-86. He has guided several post-graduate and PhD students. He is recipient of Hari Om Ashram Award-1990 (ICAR) for outstanding research in animal sciences.

There is some grain of truth in this claim, but this grain depends very much on what one takes observation to be. In the philosophy of science of our century, observation has been practically equated with sense perception. This is understandable if we think of the attitude of radical empiricism that inspired Ernst Mach and the philosophers of the Vienna Circle, who powerfully influenced our century's philosophy of science. However, this was not the atti tude of the f ounders of modern science: Galileo, f or example, expressed in a f amous passage of the Assayer the conviction that perceptual features of the world are merely subjective, and are produced in the 'anima!' by the motion and impacts of unobservable particles that are endowed uniquely with mathematically expressible properties, and which are therefore the real features of the world. Moreover, on other occasions, when defending the Copernican theory, he explicitly remarked that in admitting that the Sun is static and the Earth turns on its own axis, 'reason must do violence to the sense' , and that it is thanks to this violence that one can know the tme constitution of the universe.
