Until recently, the management of faecal sludge from these onsite systems has been grossly neglected, partially as a result of them being considered temporary solutions until sewer-based systems could be implemented. However, the perception of onsite or decentralized sanitation technologies for urban areas is gradually changing, and is increasingly being considered as long-term, sustainable options in urban areas, especially in low- and middle-income countries that lack sewer infrastructures. This is the first book dedicated to faecal sludge management. It compiles the current state of knowledge of the rapidly evolving field of faecal sludge management, and presents an integrated approach that includes technology, management, and planning based on Sandecs 20 years of experience in the field. Faecal Sludge Management: Systems Approach for Implementation and Operation addresses the organization of the entire faecal sludge management service chain, from the collection and transport of sludge, and the current state of knowledge of treatment options, to the final end use or disposal of treated sludge. Book excerpt: Road roughness is gaining increasing importance as an indicator of road condition, both in terms of pavement performance, and as a major determinant of road user costs. This paper defines roughness measurement systems hierachically into four groups, ranging from profilometric methods (2 groups), through response type road roughness measuring systems (RTRRMS's), and, subjective evaluation. The International Roughness Index (IRI) is defined, and the programs for it's calculation are provided. The IRI is based on simulation of the roughness response of a car travelling at 80 km/h. The report explains how all roughness measurements can be related to this scale, also when travelling at lower speeds than 80 km/h. The IRI emerges as a scale that can be used both for calibration and for comparative purposes.

Small ruminants are viewed as an integral, but not dominant component of complex agricultural systems. Particular emphasis is placed on sheep and goats in mixed herds grazing dry rangelands and in small mixed farm systems in medium to high rainfall areas. An analysis of major constraints -- ecological, biological, policy, and socio-economic -- leads to recommendations on the need for a balanced production system approach for research, training and development programs, and for a combination of support activities such as herd health programs, and formulation of favorable credit, marketing and pricing policies for small ruminants and their products.

Although the human disease has caused considerable suffering and death, it is the disease of domestic livestock which has, in economic terms, had the most profound effects as a major factor restricting rural African development, particularly by limiting food supply and land use. After a general discussion of the disease and its effects, this report describes the problems and techniques of controlling tsetse-transmitted trypanosomiases in the context of rural development in Africa. It also attempts to show that techniques to achieve an effective degree of trypanosomaiasis control, at least in some ecological conditions, already exist and that there is now an urgent need to put them into practice in conjunction with practical land use programmes.

C'est ainsi que le caractere anisotrope peut etre introduit involontairement lors du processus de fabrication ou de maniere deliberee pour realiser certaines fonctions electroniques en hyperfrequences (circulateurs, isolateurs etc.). Negliger l'anisotropie conduit a introduire des erreurs significatives dans la conception. Dans ce cadre, notre travail consiste a proposer une modelisation globale des circuits passifs hyperfrequences anisotropes en configuration multicouche par la methode d'approche dans le domaine spectral. L'approche proposee a ete largement validee par comparaison aux resultats disponibles dans les revues specialisees des micro-ondes.
