Ces antennes peuvent comporter un aspect large bande lorsque les applications envisagées sont liées à des critères de haut débit. Elles doivent être peu encombrantes et faible coût si elles se trouvent destinées au grand public. La première application détaillée est un réseau d'antennes imprimées carrées alimentées en coin. Il permet d'obtenir un fort gain sur une bande étroite ainsi que deux diagrammes de rayonnement particuliers (en alimentant en phase ou en opposition de phase deux sous-réseaux par l'intermédiaire d'un anneau hybride qui a donné lieu à des études et une réalisation). Une étude de faisabilité du même système dans une version antenne planaire à bande interdite photonique diélectrique montre des résultats probants. Par la suite, dans le cadre d'un projet européen, des dispositifs fort gain et large bande sont adaptés ou mis au point pour des applications grand public (L.M.D.S.) nécessitant un haut débit (télévision numérique interactive, Internet haut débit...). Des associations d'antennes amènent à répondre à ces critères simultanément. Ainsi, un dispositif existant composé d'une antenne lentille diélectrique excitée par un réseau est adapté à nos exigences. Puis la conception et la validation expérimentale d'une antenne BIP planaire tout diélectrique débouche sur une nouvelle association avec la lentille. Les aspects technologiques liés aux réalisations dans la bande millimétrique ont été décrits pour chaque antenne. Le dimensionnement théorique des structures présentées a été mené grâce à un code de calcul utilisant la méthode des différences finies dans le domaine temporel (F.D.T.D).

Ce besoin est couplé à des contraintes liées au couplage entre éléments rayonnants ou en termes d'intégration sur des petits porteurs. Ces deux contraintes peuvent être palliées à l'aide de surfaces à haute impédance (SHI) pouvant traduire le comportement d'un conducteur magnétique artificiel et/ou la capacité à interdire la propagation des ondes de surface dans une bande de fréquence. Les travaux présentés dans ce manuscrit ont pour objectif de présenter l'apport des SHI sur la conception de réseaux compacts et d'antennes réseaux ultra large bande. Après une introduction aux SHI, une présentation de modèles analytiques, numériques et expérimentaux a été présentée. Une partie des travaux est consacrée à l'étude du couplage mutuel entre deux antennes imprimées espacées l'une de l'autre d'une demi-longueur d'onde. Par la suite les différentes contributions apportées par les SHI, lorsqu'elles sont employées comme réflecteur, sur une antenne réseau ultra large bande sont montrées. Une modélisation analytique de l'antenne réseau placée au-dessus de réflecteurs à haute impédance est validée par des simulations numériques. Les SHI montrent qu'il est possible de créer des bandes passantes supplémentaires instantanées et agiles en fréquences permettant d'augmenter la bande passante initiale de l'antenne réseau. De plus elles permettent de réduire considérablement l'encombrement et d'obtenir une bande agile unique.
