Download or read book Muslims and Islam in U S Education written by Liz Jackson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-03 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of Philosophy of Education Society of Australasia (PESA)'s inaugural PESA Book Awards in 2015, and The University of Hong Kong Research Output Prize for Education 2014-15. Muslims and Islam in U.S. Education explores the complex interface that exists between U.S. school curriculum, teaching practice about religion in public schools, societal and teacher attitudes toward Islam and Muslims, and multiculturalism as a framework for meeting the needs of minority group students. It presents multiculturalism as a concept that needs to be rethought and reformulated in the interest of creating a more democratic, inclusive, and informed society. Islam is an under-considered religion in American education, due in part to the fact that Muslims represent a very small minority of the population today (less than 1%). However, this group faces a crucial challenge of representation in United States society as a whole, as well as in its schools. Muslims in the United States are impacted by ignorance that news and opinion polls have demonstrated is widespread among the public in the last few decades. U.S. citizens who do not have a balanced, fair and accurate view of Islam can make a variety of decisions in the voting booth, in job hiring, and within their small-scale but important personal networks and spheres of influence, that make a very negative impact on Muslims in the United States. This book presents new information that has implications for curricula, religious education, and multicultural education today, examining the unique case of Islam in U.S. education over the last 20 years. Chapters include: Perspectives on Multicultural Education 9/11, the Media, and the New Need to Know Islam and Muslims in Public Schools Blazing a Path for Intercultural Education This book is an essential resource for professors, researchers, and teachers of social studies, particularly those involved with multicultural issues, critical and sociocultural analysis of education and schools; as well as interdisciplinary scholars and students in anthropology and education.

Book excerpt: Fayd al-Haram stands in history a unique gem, that until now was nearly a lost treasure of intellectual thought in Islamic pedagogy. Shaykh Ahmed bin Lutfullah penned this book toward the end of his academically and spiritually rich life. Sitting in front of the Ka¿bah, he wrote the following text with the intention that it may serve as a source of revival or preservation of the deep analytical Islamic tradition in matters of education. Shaykh Ahmed was, without doubt, a polymath, having mastered the Islamic sciences, such as, jurisprudence and exegesis. He also excelled and mastered several other fields, where he was also seen as an authority, having authored books in history, math, and astronomy. Shaykh Ahmed bin Lutfullah states in the beginning of this great work that his main motivating reason for writing this book was the lack of attention given to the proper manner of perusing books or Mutala¿a. His primary goal is to teach and preserve the concept of ¿deep reading¿. Fayd al-Haram is a fresh reminder about the classical scholarly approach to learning.

As a unique international collaboration bringing into conversation theologians, historians, philosophers, teachers and sociologists of education Philosophies of Islamic Education intends to provide fresh means for conversing with contemporary debates in ethics, secularization theory, child psychology, multiculturalism, interfaith dialogue and moral education. Book Tradition and Future of Islamic Education

Download or read book Tradition and Future of Islamic Education written by Wilna A.J. Meijer and published by Waxmann Verlag. This book was released on 2009 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relation between Islam and the West is the topic of an ongoing debate. The debate often leaves us with a choice between two mutually exclusive worlds: the modern West with its enlightenment and science and accompanying secular education, or else Islam and Islamic education, characterised by orthodoxy and tradition. In the hope of promoting dialogue instead of polarisation, the author, a philosopher of education trained in the West, searches for the ideas and ideals of education, schooling and learning within Islam. Wherever knowledge and learning have blossomed, education, schooling and teaching must have flourished, too. Which educational culture was part of the highly developed intellectual culture of classical Islam? Current-day modernist Muslim intellectuals take inspiration from this rich intellectual tradition of Islam. The perspective on the future of Islamic education in the modern context, in which the book results, utilizes their ideas. Hermeneutics, the theory of interpretation, is applied to the rereading and reinterpretation of the source texts of Islam. Hermeneutics also offers an inspiring perspective on an education that strikes the balance between tradition and enlightenment.
