Download or read book World Anthropologies written by Gustavo Lins Ribeiro and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-12 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its inception, anthropology's authority has been based on the assumption that it is a unified discipline emanating from the West. In an age of heightened globalization, anthropologists have failed to discuss consistently the current status of their practice and its mutations across the globe. World Anthropologies is the first book to provoke this conversation from various regions of the world in order to assess the diversity of relations between regional or national anthropologies and a contested, power-laden Western discourse. Can a planetary anthropology cope with both the 'provincial cosmopolitanism' of alternative anthropologies and the 'metropolitan provincialism' of hegemonic schools? How might the resulting 'world anthropologies' challenge the current panorama in which certain allegedly national anthropological traditions have more paradigmatic weight - and hence more power - than others? Critically examining the international dissemination of anthropology within and across national power fields, contributors address these questions and provide the outline for a veritable world anthropologies project.

Download or read book The Extent of Poverty in Latin America written by Oscar Altimir and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work originated in a research project for the measurement and analysis of income distribution in the Latin American countries, undertaken jointly by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the World Bank. The present paper presents estimates of the extent of absolute poverty for ten Latin American countries and for the region as a whole in the 1970s, on the basis of available household surveys and population censuses. They are based on country-specific poverty lines representing minimum acceptable levels of private consumption, drawn according to a food-based method. Such poverty lines - ranging from 150 to 250 dollars of annual household consumption per capita - express a normative definition of the absolute dimensions of poverty, partly based on expert appraisals and partly reflecting the actual behavior of low income households facing the life style projected by Latin American development. According to these estimates, 40 percent of Latin American households were poor at the beginning of the 1970s, the incidence of poverty being 26 percent in urban areas and 60 percent in rural areas. Urban poverty extended to more than one-third of urban households in some countries (Brazil, Colombia, Honduras) while affecting between 20 and 30 percent in others (Peru, Mexico, Venezuela), about 15 percent in Costa Rica and Chile and less than 10 percent in Argentina and Uruguay. The extent of poverty in rural areas would not be less than 20 percent in any case and would reach more than 60 percent in some countries. The corresponding poverty gaps were also estimated; in terms of total household income, they may represent manageable proportions (around 2-3 percent) in the better-off countries, but are in the 4-8 percent range in the bigger countries of the region and reach as much as 12 percent in Peru and 17 percent in Honduras.

Download or read book Soil Quality for Crop Production and Ecosystem Health written by E.G. Gregorich and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1997-11-10 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soil is a complex body that exists as many types, each with diverse properties that may vary widely across time and space as a function of many factors. This complexity makes the evaluation of soil quality much more challenging than that of water or air quality. Evaluation of soil quality now considers environmental implications as well as economic productivity, seeking to be more holistic in its approach. Thus, soil quality research draws from a wide range of disciplines, blending the approaches of biologists, physicists, chemists, ecologists, economists and agronomists, among others. This book presents a broad perspective of soil quality that includes these various perspectives and gives a strong theoretical basis for the assessment of soil quality.A short glossary provides definitions for terms used throughout the book.
Download or read book Mediating Languages and Cultures written by Dieter Buttjes and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 1991 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of "language teaching" is shot through with methods and approaches to language learning - most recently with "communicative language teaching" - but this book demonstrates that a more differentiated and richer understanding of learning a foreign language is both necessary and desirable. Languages and cultures are interlinked and interdependent and their teaching and learning should be too. Learning another language is part of a complex process of learning and understanding other people's ways of life, ways of thinking and socio-economic experience

Book excerpt: MATEMAX is a bilingual schoolbook of mathematical problems written with the premise that one of the fundamental ways of learning mathematics, in addition to being one of the goals of the subject, is to solve problems. The book is designed for children and young teens and aims to teach mathematics in an entertaining way. Problems are based on familiar everyday situations, and helpful hints guide students to develop strategies before diving into calculations, leading to practice in abstract thinking, an essential feature of mathematics. Presented in both English and Spanish it also provides equal access to students, parents and teachers with facility in either or both languages. An online supplement is available upon request at [email protected]. This companion book provides complete solutions, alternative methods and additional suggestions to complement the short answers contained in the book. In addition, while problems are arranged in the book as they appear naturally in life, the companion text connects the mathematical tools with standard curricula. Here is a sampling of those pages. Download or read book Culture Language Text written by Fredrik Christian Brøgger and published by Berg Publishers. This book was released on 1992 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a pioneering attempt within the university study of English as a foreign language to provide the discipline of culture studies (particularly the study of American/British civilization) with a theory and methodology of its own. Focusing on the anthropological concept of culture as belief systems, the author suggests that culture studies should be primarily concerned with the analysis of the interplay between language and ideology. Essentially interdisciplinary, the field is conceived as a philological, text-oriented study of culture.

Download or read book Promoting Reading Comprehension written by IRA Cognitive Psychology and Reading Comprehension Committee and published by Newark, Del. : International Reading Association. This book was released on 1984 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed to present a historical account of instructional approaches to the teaching of comprehension as well as insights into effective approaches for the present and the future, this collection of papers is divided into three parts, concerned respectively with: (1) instructional research in reading comprehension, (2) the reader and the text, and (3) the reader and the teacher. Each paper discusses critical issues in comprehension instruction and recommends strategies for effective teaching. The four papers in part one discuss what research reveals about teaching practices, propose a framework for conducting research, suggest the impact of the social context on instruction, and trace the history of teaching and testing reading comprehension. The six papers in part two discuss text-related issues in reading comprehension instruction, including the ways teachers intervene to improve student comprehension, the use of text organization to enhance students' understanding, and text structures found in popular television shows. The seven articles in part three examine interactions between teachers and their students and make recommendations for teaching reading comprehension and vocabulary skills. (MM)
