  • ISBN : 1409424308
  • Pages : 295 pages

Download or read book Legacies of Ewan MacColl written by Professor Allan F Moore and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2014-11-28 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contributes significantly to the debate surrounding the importance of Ewan MacColl to the English folk revival. MacColl gave two extended interviews with co-editor Giovanni Vacca in 1987 and 1988 and these provide the impetus for a re-examination of his methods, his politics and his aesthetic aims. Great emphasis is placed on the importance of seeing MacColl as not only a British, but a European folk activist, through discussion of his hitherto barely known work in Italy, enabling a re-contextualization of his work within a broader European context. Peggy Seeger contributes a Foreword to the collection.

Book Alan Lomax

Download or read book Alan Lomax written by John Szwed and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2010-12-30 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The remarkable life and times of the man who popularized American folk music and created the science of song Folklorist, archivist, anthropologist, singer, political activist, talent scout, ethnomusicologist, filmmaker, concert and record producer, Alan Lomax is best remembered as the man who introduced folk music to the masses. Lomax began his career making field recordings of rural music for the Library of Congress and by the late 1930s brought his discoveries to radio, including Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, and Burl Ives. By the 1940s he was producing concerts that brought white and black performers together, and in the 1950s he set out to record the whole world. Lomax was also a controversial figure. When he worked for the U. S. government he was tracked by the FBI, and when he worked in Britain, MI5 continued the surveillance. In his last years he turned to digital media and developed technology that anticipated today's breakthroughs. Featuring a cast of characters including Eleanor Roosevelt, Leadbelly, Carl Sandburg, Carl Sagan, Jelly Roll Morton, Muddy Waters, and Bob Dylan, Szwed's fascinating biography memorably captures Lomax and provides a definitive account of an era as seen through the life of one extraordinary man.

Book Migration Italy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Graziella Parati
  • Publisher : University of Toronto Press
  • Release : 2013-12-31
  • ISBN : 1442620080
  • Pages : 282 pages

Download or read book Migration Italy written by Graziella Parati and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2013-12-31 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In terms of migration, Italy is often thought of as a source country - a place from which people came rather than one to which people go. However, in the past few decades, Italy has indeed become a destination for many people from poor or war-torn countries seeking a better life in a stable environment. Graziella Parati's Migration Italy examines immigration to Italy in the past twenty years, and explores the processes of cultural hybridization that have occurred. Working from a cultural studies viewpoint, Parati constructs a theoretical framework for discussing Italy as a country of immigration. She gives special attention to immigrant literature, positing that it functions as an act of resistance, a means to talk back to the laws that regulate the lives of migrants. Parati also examines Italian cinema, demonstrating how native and non-native filmmakers alike create parallels between old and new migrations, complicating the definitions of sameness and difference. These definitions and the complexities inherent in the different cultural, legal, and political positions of Italy's people are at the heart of Migration Italy, a unique work of immense importance for understanding society in both modern-day Italy and, indeed, the entire European continent.
