Book excerpt: This volume gathers twelve studies on key aspects of the history of Rome and its empire between the end of the Hannibalic War (200 BCE) and the election of Tiberius Gracchus to the tribunate (134 BCE). Through this periodization, which places the focus on what intervened between two major and well-studied historical turning points in Republican history, the book aims to bring new light to the interplay between imperial expansion, political volatility, and intellectual developments, and on the various levels on which historical change unfolded. The lack of a continuous ancient narrative for this period, even late or derivative, has shaped much of the historiographical discourse about it. This volume seeks to convey a new sense of the depth of the period and establishes new connections among aspects of human agency and action that are usually considered in isolation from one another. It puts in fruitful dialogue contribution on a range of topics as diverse as climate change, oratory, agrarian laws, urban architecture, and the civilian military, among others. The result is a diverse, multifocal, non-hierarchical assessment of a critical but often understudied period in Roman history. Three main threads - the three parts of the book - shape the choices of the authors. The second thread groups the authors who dialogue with contemporary protagonists of the planning debate (including John Friedmann, Leonie Sandercock, Doreen Massey, David Harvey, Tom Sievert, and Patzy Healey). The third thread includes authors who dig into relevant writings in social and philosophical sciences (including Max Weber, Charles Lindblom, Henri Lefebvre, Gilles Deleuze & Félix Guattari, Georges Didi-Huberman, Robert Nozick, Pand hilip K Dick). The book is addressed to researchers of planning and urban studies, who value the critical re-reading of some fundamental books. Including thoughtful and critical arguments on influential thinkers of the past two centuries, the book will enable students, scholars and researchers of planning, design, political science, geographical, environmental, and urban studies to better understand the socio-spatial and ecological transformations under the contemporary transition while relying on a “usable past”. Il titolo, e la poesia stessa, sono sembrati pertinenti a sintetizzare il senso del progetto archeologico sull’antica Equilo, di cui si pubblicano in questo volume i primi risultati. ‘In limine’ significa ‘sulla soglia’: indica cioè un punto di passaggio, un confine; e, nel nostro caso, metaforicamente rimarca il discrimine tra passato e presente, il luogo archeologico dove la materia inerte diviene narrazione. Qui, in limine, è anche uno spazio fisico preciso, quello dell’area delle ‘Antiche Mura’, luogo anche tangibile della memoria collettiva. Un luogo, ieri come oggi, ai margini. Se l’antica Equilo era stato un insediamento sul confine instabile tra mare e laguna, la moderna Jesolo, che ne ha ereditato il nome, ha lasciato che i ruderi della sua memoria restassero al di fuori del centro abitato: nel punto dove la città diventa campagna, lì sorgono le rovine dell’antica cattedrale, lì rimane il reliquiario della comunità, come una sorta di giardino ‘dove affonda un morto viluppo di memorie’ (di nuovo Montale). Gli archeologi hanno cercato nel tempo di recuperare quelle memorie e quel passato, con pazienza e fatica. Così, il progetto nato qualche anno fa per iniziativa del Dipartimento di Studi Umanistici dell’Università Ca’ Foscari di Venezia, non costituisce che l’ultimo atto di un percorso che ha inizio dalla metà del secolo scorso, con gli scavi nell’area della cattedrale e nel vicino sito della chiesa di San Mauro. I contributi che si pubblicano in questa circostanza raccontano e sintetizzano i risultati degli ultimi anni di scavi. L’interconnessione tra le varie strategie di indagine ci ha consentito di proporre una ricostruzione storico-insediativa del sito del tutto inedita e sorprendente.

It argues that the question we need to ask is how security communities work at a time when armed conflicts among states have become significantly less frequent compared to other non-military threats and trans-boundary risks (e.g. terrorism and the adverse effects of climate change). Drawing upon recent advances in practice theory, the book suggests that the emergence and spread of cooperative security practices, ranging from multilateral diplomacy to crisis management, are as important for understanding how security communities work as more traditional confidence-building measures. Using the EU, Spain and Morocco as an in-depth case study, this volume reveals that through the institutionalization of multilateral venues, the EU has provided cooperative frameworks that otherwise would not have been available, and that the de-territorialized notion of security threats has created a new rationale for practical cooperation between Spanish and Moroccan diplomats, armed forces and civilian authorities. Within the broader context, this book provides a mechanism-based framework for studying regional organizations as security community-building institutions, and by utilizing that framework it shows how practice theory can be applied in empirical research to generate novel and thought-provoking results of relevance for the broader field of IR.
