Book Special Purpose Computers

Download or read book Special Purpose Computers written by Berni J. Alder and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Special Purpose Computers describes special-purpose computers and compares them to general-purpose computers in terms of speed and cost. Examples of computers that were designed for the efficient solution of long established algorithms are given, including Navier-Stokes hydrodynamic solvers, classical molecular dynamic machines, and Ising model computers. Comprised of seven chapters, this volume begins by documenting the progress of the CalTech Concurrent Computation Program and its evolution from computational high-energy physics to a supercomputer initiative, with emphasis on the lessons learned including computer architecture issues and the trade-offs between in-house and commercial development. The reader is then introduced to the QCD Machine, a special-purpose parallel supercomputer that was designed and built to solve the lattice quantum chromodynamics problem. Subsequent chapters focus on the Geometry-Defining Processors and their application to the solution of partial differential equations; the Navier-Stokes computer; parallel processing using the Loosely Coupled Array of Processors (LCAP) system; and the Delft Ising system processor. The design and implementation of the Delft molecular-dynamics processor are also described. This book will be of interest to computer engineers and designers.

Book Investigations of Applications of General purpose Computers to Space Systems Communication control Systems

Download or read book Investigations of Applications of General purpose Computers to Space Systems Communication control Systems written by R. A. Yocke and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Present space vehicles utilize a number of special-purpose computers to perform the requisite functional operations. This study was conducted to investigate the feasibility and practicality of replacing the special-purpose units with the general-purpose computer. To adequately determine therequisite characteristics of general purpose digital computer for space systems, the functions that such a system will be required to perform have been investigated. This study has been limited to functions that are actively being performed in current missions or proposed for scheduled missions. For each function, a flow diagram describing the information and program progression was made. From these diagrams, a functional program for hypothetical machine was written. The results thus obtained provided sufficient information to evolve recommended design and to delineate machine characteristics. In addition, the hardware requirements have been computed. The resultant computer consumes 135 watts, occupies 2 cu ft, weighs 70 lb, and establishes the feasibility of using general-purpose programmable digital computer to replace the many presently used special-purpose computers.

Book Principles of Synthesis and Performance of Special purpose Computing Systems

Download or read book Principles of Synthesis and Performance of Special purpose Computing Systems written by V. D. Panasenko and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General problems involved in the synthesis and performance of special-purpose multicomputer systems are discussed. Three trends in the organization of joint operation of computers are distinguished: (1) Joint operation of a few existing various general-purpose computers; (2) Joint operation of a few identical general-purpose computers; (3) A special-purpose computing system (SPCS) which may consist of different or identical computers. Parallel and sometimes series-parallel algorithms are most suitable for SPCS; their efficiency can be evaluated by the minimum algorithm length and the total number of required operations. These indices of performance of SPCA are considered: (a) productivity, i.e., the net machine time spent in solving a problem; (b) productivity ratio, i.e., the ratio of the time required to solve a problem by one computer to the time required to solve the same problem by SPCS consisting of identical computers; (c) structural suitability of algorithm to SPCS; (d) utilization factor of SPCS; (e) complexity and economy of SPCS.

Book Special purpose Analog Computers Assembled from Standard Modules

Download or read book Special purpose Analog Computers Assembled from Standard Modules written by V. I. Ogurtsov and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Generally, any linear or nonlinear analog computer consists of three principal units: power-supply unit, solver, cathode-ray tube display. Modular units of this kind are being manufactured by the Soviet industry. Thus, the UESV-1 type power-supply unit is designed to power unified operational amplifiers UU-1 and UU-3 which serve to construct various solving units: adders, scalers, integrators, inverters, multipliers and others. The cathode-ray tube displays most often used in analog computers are those of the 1-4 and 1-5 types both designed for visual observation of the process on the cathode-ray tube screen. The three principal units can be used along with various accessories to construct special purpose linear and nonlinear analog computers containing from 20 to 500 operational dc amplifiers and designed for the solution of problems described by ordinary linear and nonlinear differential equations, partial differential equations and algebraic equations and their cost is relatively low compared with the cost of serially manufactured analog computers. This book was released on 1998-03-06 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific Simulations with Special-Purpose Computers. The GRAPE Systems J. Makino University of Tokyo, Japan and M. Taiji Institute for Statistical Mathematics, Tokyo, Japan Physics is full of complex many-body problems, i.e. problems where there are a large number of bodies interacting. This is particularly true in astrophysics, where stars or galaxies can be thought of as individual particles, but also in plasma physics, hydrodynamics and molecular dynamics. Special purpose computers have been developed to handle these highly complex problems. Scientific Simulations with Special-Purpose Computers gives an overview of these systems, and then focuses on an extremely high profile and successful project-the GRAPE computer at the University of Tokyo-and discusses its development, performance and applications across a range of problems. The future development and applications of special purpose computers are also discussed. Written by two of the leading developers of the GRAPE system, this unique volume will be of great interest to readers across a wide range of fields, including, astrophysicists, astronomers, plasma physicists, researchers in molecular dynamics and computer scientists.
