Book A Computer Simulation of Random Packings and Packed Tower

Download or read book A Computer Simulation of Random Packings and Packed Tower written by Richard Morell Spencer and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several computer models of the random packing of equal spheres are developed. One model attempts to take account of the momentum effects of spheres as they are added to the packing, whilst two other models, which are based on previous work, involve only the static placement of spheres onto three others. Using the two last mentioned models, five agglomerates of 100000 spheres packed into cylinders are produced. Their voidage varies from 0.394 to 0.451, but they all have an average co-ordination number of six. The geometrical properties of the packings are analysed in detail, including the properties of the Voronoi polyhedra so formed. A further extension demonstrates a method of introducing regular crystals of any desired shape and size into the random packing. Once a model of random packing was generated, the output from it was used as input to a computer simulation of a packed tower, which takes account of the micro- mass transfer as well as the macro- mass transfer within the tower. The results show that it is easy to obtain good agreement between observation and simulation and therefore suggests that a simulation such as this may be a powerful tool for chemical engineers.

Book Predictive Process Control of Crowded Particulate Suspensions

Download or read book Predictive Process Control of Crowded Particulate Suspensions written by James E. Funk and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 791 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom; and with all thy getting, get understanding. Proverbs 4:7 In the early chapters of the book of Proverbs there is a strong emphasis on three words: knowledge, understanding, and wisdom. Perhaps we can apply these words to our philosophy behind the technology of Predictive Process Control. Knowledge is the accumulation of information provided by education as we begin to store the data in our brains that should prepare us for the challenges of the manufacturing environment. It applies to every level and every opportunity of education, formal and informal. This is simply to Know, without any requirement except a good memory, and is the basis for the following two thoughts. Understanding is the assimilation of knowledge, or the thinking process, as we begin to arrange and rearrange the data we Know for quick recall as it may be needed. This also applies to every level and opportunity of education. It is Know-Why based upon what we Know, and it requires some scepticism of oversimplified answers and a hunger for mental consistency. Wisdom is the application of both knowledge and understanding in real life enterprises. As we apply both our knowledge and understanding in those situations, all three are further enhanced by each progressive experience. This is that wonderful Know-How - to apply our education based upon Know-why, which was based upon Knowledge - which provides the confidence we need to advance in all phases of performance.

Book Sphere Packings Lattices and Groups

Download or read book Sphere Packings Lattices and Groups written by John H. Conway and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 690 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main themes. This book is mainly concerned with the problem of packing spheres in Euclidean space of dimensions 1,2,3,4,5, . . . . Given a large number of equal spheres, what is the most efficient (or densest) way to pack them together? We also study several closely related problems: the kissing number problem, which asks how many spheres can be arranged so that they all touch one central sphere of the same size; the covering problem, which asks for the least dense way to cover n-dimensional space with equal overlapping spheres; and the quantizing problem, important for applications to analog-to-digital conversion (or data compression), which asks how to place points in space so that the average second moment of their Voronoi cells is as small as possible. Attacks on these problems usually arrange the spheres so their centers form a lattice. Lattices are described by quadratic forms, and we study the classification of quadratic forms. Most of the book is devoted to these five problems. The miraculous enters: the E 8 and Leech lattices. When we investigate those problems, some fantastic things happen! There are two sphere packings, one in eight dimensions, the E 8 lattice, and one in twenty-four dimensions, the Leech lattice A , which are unexpectedly good and very 24 symmetrical packings, and have a number of remarkable and mysterious properties, not all of which are completely understood even today.

Book Computational Science ICCS 2002

Download or read book Computational Science ICCS 2002 written by Peter M.A. Sloot and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-08-01 with total page 1265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computational Science is the scientific discipline that aims at the development and understanding of new computational methods and techniques to model and simulate complex systems. The area of application includes natural systems - such as biology environ mental and geo-sciences, physics, and chemistry - and synthetic systems such as electronics and financial and economic systems. The discipline is a bridge bet ween 'classical' computer science - logic, complexity, architecture, algorithm- mathematics, and the use of computers in the aforementioned areas. The relevance for society stems from the numerous challenges that exist in the various science and engineering disciplines, which can be tackled by advances made in this field. For instance new models and methods to study environmental issues like the quality of air, water, and soil, and weather and climate predictions through simulations, as well as the simulation-supported development of cars, airplanes, and medical and transport systems etc. Paraphrasing R. Kenway (R.D. Kenway, Contemporary Physics. 1994): 'There is an important message to scientists, politicians, and industrialists: in the future science, the best industrial design and manufacture, the greatest medical progress, and the most accurate environmental monitoring and forecasting will be done by countries that most rapidly exploit the full potential of computational science'. Nowadays we have access to high-end computer architectures and a large range of computing environments, mainly as a consequence of the enormous sti mulus from the various international programs on advanced computing, e.g.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
