Book Monitoring Simulation and Management of Visitor Landscapes

Download or read book Monitoring Simulation and Management of Visitor Landscapes written by Howard Randal Gimblett and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Conventional methods used in the planning and management of human-landscape interactions fall far short of the needs of today s land management professionals. Monitoring, Simulation, and Management of Visitor Landscapes presents a growing body of applied research that provides decision makers with tools to maintain the ecological integrity of public places by evaluating the impacts of humans in various landscapes across space and time." "This will help land managers and policy makers construct strategies for evaluating interactions between humans and the environment and expand the model of land management to include social and geographic, as well as environmental, factors."--Jacket.

Book Sustainable Transportation in Natural and Protected Areas

Download or read book Sustainable Transportation in Natural and Protected Areas written by Francesco Orsi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protected areas are at the centre of nature-based tourism, which is increasingly popular across the world. As visitor numbers increase, so does awareness of the harmful effects that large crowds may have on both natural resources and individuals’ recreational experience. This volume considers the challenge of transportation to and within natural and protected areas, the improvement of which has already been recognised as having great potential for mitigating the environmental impacts of ecotourism. While several books have focused considerable attention to the management of protected areas in general, little has been said about the specific issue of sustainable transport, an emerging trend that is already reshaping visitation patterns in natural settings. This book provides current knowledge on issues associated with the transportation of visitors in natural and protected areas, and a comprehensive overview of the technical and strategic options available to tackle these issues. It approaches the subject via three main topics: preferences, or the visitors' attitudes towards transportation; practices, where current approaches are assessed through examples and case-studies of successful experiences and methodologies from around the world; and policies, where suggestions and recommendations are put forward for both local scale strategies and broad-scale regulatory action with global relevance. Contributors include academics in the field of natural resource management and tourism, with extensive experience in protected area management and active partnerships with natural park administrations.

Book Simulation of Recreational Use for Park and Wilderness Management

Download or read book Simulation of Recreational Use for Park and Wilderness Management written by Mordechai Schechter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2011. This book describes the application of an advanced analytical technique, simulation modeling, (WUSM) to a significant problem in resources management. It includes ideas which have grown out of practical resource management problems that have progressed through conceptual models to operational tools and finally to application in actual public land management settings. It is similarly rewarding to see the work being adapted for use by the National Park Service and other agencies at home and abroad.

Download or read book Wildland Recreation written by William E. Hammitt and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-02-03 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authoritative guide to understanding and managing the ecological impacts of recreational activities in wildlands This third edition provides an updated and thorough examination of the ecological impacts of recreational use on wildlands and the best management practices to employ in places where recreation and preservation of natural conditions are both important - and often conflicting - objectives. Covering the latest research, this edition provides detailed information about the environmental changes that result from recreational use. It describes spatial patterns of impact and trends over time, then explores the factors that determine magnitude of impact, including amount of use, type and behavior of use, and environmental durability. Numerous examples, drawn from parks and recreation areas around the world, give readers insight into why certain areas are more heavily damaged than others, and demonstrate the techniques available to mitigate damage. The book incorporates both the first-hand experience of the authors and an exhaustive review of the world’s literature on the subject. Boxes provide quick access to important material, and further resources are referenced in an extensive bibliography. Essential reading for all park and protected area management professionals, this book is also a useful textbook for upper division undergraduate and graduate students on recreation ecology and recreation management courses.

Book Taking Tourism to the Limits

Download or read book Taking Tourism to the Limits written by Michelle Aicken and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-08-11 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of margins and limits is often referred to within the tourism academic literature and includes subjects as diverse as carrying capacities, peripheral economies, technological advancement, adventure tourism, dark tourism and socially marginalized communities. After identifying a number of ways in which ‘limits’ might be defined Taking Tourism to the Limits explores concepts and challenges facing contemporary tourism in five main sections, namely in tourism planning and management, nature based tourism, dark tourism, adventure and sport tourism and the accommodation industry. Drawing upon case studies, current research and conceptualizations these different facets of the ‘limits’ are each introduced by the editors with commentaries that seek to identify themes and current practice and thinking in the respective domains. The picture that emerges is of an industry that reinvents itself in response to changing market parameters even while core issues of stakeholder equities and political processes remain problematic. International in scale, the book links with its companion piece Indigenous Tourism – the commodification and management of culture (also published by Elsevier) as an outcome of the very highly successful conference, Taking Tourism to the Limits hosted by the University of Waikato’ Department of Tourism Management in 2003.

Book Numerical Visitor Capacity

Download or read book Numerical Visitor Capacity written by David N. Cole and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite decades of academic work and practical management applications, the concept of visitor capacity remains controversial and inconsistently operationalized. Nevertheless, there are situations where development of a numerical estimate of capacity is important and where not doing so has resulted in land management agencies being successfully litigated. This report is a guide to developing estimates of numerical visitor capacity, with particular emphasis on wilderness. It reviews capacity concepts, surveys available approaches to capacity determination, and outlines a generic process. Appendices provide information on relevant legislation and policy, as well as detailed examples and templates.
