Book Computer Models in Environmental Planning

Download or read book Computer Models in Environmental Planning written by Steven I. Gordon and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose behind Computer Models in Environmental Planning is to provide a practical and applied guide to the use of these models in environmental planning and environmental impact analysis. Models concerning water quality, air quality, stormwater runoff, land capabil ity evaluationfland information systems, and hazardous waste dis posal are reviewed and critiqued. I have tried to emphasize the practical problems with data, computer capabilities, and other analyt ical questions that must be faced by the practitioner attempting to use these models. Thus, I do not delve too deeply into the theoretical underpinnings of the models, referring the reader instead to specialized references in this area. For each environmental area, I review the major models and methods, comparing their assumptions, ease of use, and other characteristics. Practical examples illustrate the benefits and problems of using each model. Computer models are increasingly being used by planning and engineering professionals for locating and planning public works, and industrial, commercial, and residential projects, while evaluating their environmental impacts. The requirements of the National Environ mental Policy Act and related state laws as well as separate state and federal laws concerning air and water quality, stormwater runoff, land use, and hazardous waste disposal have made the use of these methods mandatory in many circumstances. Yet, explanations of both the benefits and problems associated with supposedly easy-to-use com puter versions of these models and methods remain, at best, difficult to retrieve and, at worst, incomplete.

Book Water Environment Modeling

Download or read book Water Environment Modeling written by Clark C.K. Liu and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-11-01 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water Environment Modeling covers the formulations and applications of mathematical models that simulate water flow and chemical transport in rivers, lakes, groundwater, estuaries, coastal, and ocean waters. These models are used to evaluate the response of water environment to human interventions and serve as useful analytical tools for water pollution control and resource management. Simple and comprehensive modeling techniques and their practical applications are presented with examples and exercises, most of which are derived from actual case studies. In general, simple models can be solved analytically and comprehensive models require numerical solutions. While simple models are usually adopted for preliminary assessment of a particular water environment, comprehensive models are used to provide detailed spatial and temporal variations of pollutants in complex environments. The system-based models in the forms of integral equations are introduced as an alternative modeling approach. This textbook is ideal for advanced undergraduate students and graduate students in civil and environmental engineering and related academic fields. It is also suitable as a reference book for practicing engineers and scientists. Authors: Clark C.K. Liu is Emeritus Professor of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at University of Hawaii and former Environmental Engineering Director of US National Science Foundation. Pengzhi Lin is Professor of State Key Laboratory of Hydraulics and Mountain River Engineering at Sichuan University. He is the author of Numerical Modeling of Water Waves (CRC Press, 2008). Hong Xiao is Professor and Vice Director of Hydroinformatics Institute of the State Key Laboratory of Hydraulics and Mountain River Engineering at Sichuan University.

Book Coastal Environment

Download or read book Coastal Environment written by Agustin J. Ferrante and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In recent years, it has become increasingly important to study the behaviour of coastal areas, and to be able to model such regions under normal and extreme conditions. The poor environmental quality in these regions, due to pollution and other problems, has been the cause of serious international concern, with many of the worst affected areas being densely populated or the sites of major industrial development. Computer models, in combination with sensing equipment and experimental sampling techniques, have helped in the prevention of natural and man-made disasters, by providing adequate means for the study of the behaviour of water, ground and air systems. Computer models are also used for the determination and assessment of a situation once a disaster has occurred, thus aiding the optimization of the resources available from remedial action. However, it is clear that further study into environmental problems, using efficient and reliable modelling and analysis tools, is essential in order to maintain and improve on existing methods." "This book will be of particular interest to people involved in environmental studies and environmental modelling."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
