Book 62 Projects to Make with a Dead Computer

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer hacking takes on a whole new meaning when you're going at it with a screwdriver and hammer: announcing the most wildly inventive, eco-friendly craft book on repurposing everyday objects since Generation T. Except in this case the raw material isn't a T-shirt, but the stuff we all have lying around and have no idea what to do with, or even how to get rid of properly—your old cell phone, a broken printer, irredeemable iPod, busted digital camera, mysterious thatches of cables and wires, orphaned keyboards, and of course, those dead PCs and laptops. Created by a Parsons design graduate who’s obsessed with navigating the intersection of art and technology, here are 62 ingenious projects that are irresistibly geek-chic. An iMac Terrarium—how cool is that? A laptop Digital Photo Frame. The impressively green Scanner Compost Bin. Plus a power strip Bird Feeder, Walkman Soap Dish, My First Squiggle Bot, Qwerty Hair Tie, Flat-screen Ant Farm. Each project has complete, step-by-step instructions, is rated by difficulty—in a thorough first chapter the author covers all the tools and skills needed to take apart electronics safely—and is arranged by use, from stuff for the house, to fashion, toys, arts and crafts, items for pets, and more.

Book How Computers Really Work

Download or read book How Computers Really Work written by Matthew Justice and published by No Starch Press. This book was released on 2020-12-29 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An approachable, hands-on guide to understanding how computers work, from low-level circuits to high-level code. How Computers Really Work is a hands-on guide to the computing ecosystem: everything from circuits to memory and clock signals, machine code, programming languages, operating systems, and the internet. But you won't just read about these concepts, you'll test your knowledge with exercises, and practice what you learn with 41 optional hands-on projects. Build digital circuits, craft a guessing game, convert decimal numbers to binary, examine virtual memory usage, run your own web server, and more. Explore concepts like how to: Think like a software engineer as you use data to describe a real world concept Use Ohm's and Kirchhoff's laws to analyze an electrical circuit Think like a computer as you practice binary addition and execute a program in your mind, step-by-step The book's projects will have you translate your learning into action, as you: Learn how to use a multimeter to measure resistance, current, and voltage Build a half adder to see how logical operations in hardware can be combined to perform useful functions Write a program in assembly language, then examine the resulting machine code Learn to use a debugger, disassemble code, and hack a program to change its behavior without changing the source code Use a port scanner to see which internet ports your computer has open Run your own server and get a solid crash course on how the web works And since a picture is worth a thousand bytes, chapters are filled with detailed diagrams and illustrations to help clarify technical complexities. Requirements: The projects require a variety of hardware - electronics projects need a breadboard, power supply, and various circuit components; software projects are performed on a Raspberry Pi. Appendix B contains a complete list. Even if you skip the projects, the book's major concepts are clearly presented in the main text.

Book Silent Crusader

Download or read book Silent Crusader written by Cheryl Kantak and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an intimately personal memoir about a woman, Cindy, born deaf and with multiple other birth defects. Cindy was not expected to survive, yet she endured numerous surgeries and other medical procedures over the years, showing uncommon strength and determination. Now in her fifties, Cindy lives in her own home with supports and enjoys a happy and active life. This story is also about Cindy’s parents, devoted and committed to her and her sister Deb, who was also born with disabilities. Their parents stood toe-to-toe with Cindy against often flawed and intractable systems of support. They fought with and for Cindy to ensure a rewarding life for her and an impactful outcome that to this day benefits other individuals with disabilities. Along the way, author Cheryl Kantak tells of the journey their family took to get Cindy to where she is now. This book recounts setbacks and struggles related to misdiagnoses, educational biases against persons with disabilities, and facilitated communication, a controversial form of communication. Overcoming these and other challenges, Cindy’s strength and her parents’ resolve set pioneering legal precedent and paved the way for others like Cindy. But in the end, this is a story of love and a parents’ belief in their daughter, never wavering in recognizing her strengths and capabilities. It is a story of courage and perseverance. Although Cindy is deaf and has limited communication skills, her life has made a positive impact on the lives of many. She is a crusader even though she has never spoken a word.

Book Computer Scenographics

Download or read book Computer Scenographics written by Darwin Reid Payne and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Darwin Reid Payne's approach to theatrical design is that of a computer advocate and pioneer. With Computer Scenographics, he ushers in a new generation of scenery design by applying state-of-the-art technology to the traditional methods of scenography. Though not a how-to book, Computer Scenographics is a general introduction to, and an affirmation of, the value of computer graphics for both student and working scenographers. Payne acknowledges that many scenographers would not want to use computers exclusively in the preparation of their designs. Today's scenographers continue to value the manual skills of drawing and painting, learned and perfected over time, and would not consider abandoning these skills entirely. And it is unlikely that the most powerful computer or most sophisticated software could ever supplant that intimate interaction of hand and mind provided by traditional tools and materials. Nevertheless, Payne's utilization of the Virtus Walk-Through computer program to facilitate set design expands the tools of the artist to new dimensions. Aided by 129 illustrations, Payne addresses four major topics: (1) how computer studios are set up; (2) how computers serve as storage for visual ideas and as conceptual tools; (3) how technical information needed for producing a scenographer's ideas onstage is created with computers; (4) and how modelmaking has been changed by computer-generated three-dimensional possibilities, especially by the introduction of "virtual reality" onto the computer platform.

Book Computer Science Project Work

Download or read book Computer Science Project Work written by Sally Fincher and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-02-01 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ninety percent of any Computing Science academic staff are involved with project work at some stage of their working life. Often they have no previous experience of how to handle it, and there are no written guidelines or reference books at the moment. Knowledge and practical experiences are often only disseminated from one institution to another when staff change jobs. This book is the first reference work to fill that gap in the market. It will be of use to lecturers and course designers who want to improve their handling of project work in specific courses, and to department heads and deans who want to learn about overall strategic issues and experiences from other institutions.
