Book Computational Model of Cold formed Steel Members

Download or read book Computational Model of Cold formed Steel Members written by Hamed Amouzegar and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Post-buckling behavior of thin-walled, cold-formed steel members is complicated. The discrepancy between the experimentally measured load-deformation curves and computational simulations stems from a fundamental lack of knowledge about the initial stage of these members, such as residual stresses and strains and geometric imperfections. We develop a numerical algorithm to calculate the through-thickness variation of residual stresses and strains. The algorithm calculates the stresses and strains by viewing the manufacturing process as a combination of elasto-plastic bending and spring back in a wide plate under plane strain conditions. The results obtained via the proposed algorithm are verified with the available closed formed solutions, finite element analysis results and experimental measurements. A parametric study is performed to evaluate the effect of the coil radius and cross-sectional and material properties on the residual stresses and strains. We also propose a framework for statistical analysis of the impact of global imperfection modes on collapse behavior of cold-formed steel members. The measured global geometric imperfections of cold-formed lipped channels are used within a stochastic fully nonlinear simulation framework to calculate an ensemble of load-deformation curves as well as load carrying capacities describing, in a statistical sense, the collapse behavior of cold-formed lipped channels. A robust analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique is finally used to examine the contribution of different imperfection modes in the variability present in the nonlinear response and to make quantitative conclusions on the impact of imperfect ion modes, both individually and in groups, on the collapse behavior.

Book Building Information Modeling

Download or read book Building Information Modeling written by Nawari O. Nawari and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BIM for Structural Engineering and Architecture Building Information Modeling: Framework for Structural Design outlines one of the most promising new developments in architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC). Building information modeling (BIM) is an information management and analysis technology that is changing the role of computation in the architectural and engineering industries. The innovative process constructs a database assembling all of the objects needed to build a specific structure. Instead of using a computer to produce a series of drawings that together describe the building, BIM creates a single illustration representing the building as a whole. This book highlights the BIM technology and explains how it is redefining the structural analysis and design of building structures. BIM as a Framework Enabler This book introduces a new framework—the structure and architecture synergy framework (SAS framework)—that helps develop and enhance the understanding of the fundamental principles of architectural analysis using BIM tools. Based upon three main components: the structural melody, structural poetry, and structural analysis, along with the BIM tools as the frame enabler, this new framework allows users to explore structural design as an art while also factoring in the principles of engineering. The framework stresses the influence structure can play in form generation and in defining spatial order and composition. By highlighting the interplay between architecture and structure, the book emphasizes the conceptual behaviors of structural systems and their aesthetic implications and enables readers to thoroughly understand the art and science of whole structural system concepts. Presents the use of BIM technology as part of a design process or framework that can lead to a more comprehensive, intelligent, and integrated building design Places special emphasis on the application of BIM technology for exploring the intimate relationship between structural engineering and architectural design Includes a discussion of current and emerging trends in structural engineering practice and the role of the structural engineer in building design using new BIM technologies Building Information Modeling: Framework for Structural Design provides a thorough understanding of architectural structures and introduces a new framework that revolutionizes the way building structures are designed and constructed.

Book Computer aided Design of Cold formed Steel Structural Members

Download or read book Computer aided Design of Cold formed Steel Structural Members written by Mary Therese Zuehlke and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Cold-formed steel provides an alternative to traditional hot-rolled steel for the design of members subjected to relatively light loads. The primary disadvantage of cold-formed steel member design is the tedium associated with iterative calculations. This thesis deals with the computerization of the analysis and design procedures for cold-formed steel members. A computer program performing the design and analysis of cold-formed steel beams, columns and beam-columns is presented. The program is based on the 1986 edition of the "Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members" issued by the American Iron and Steel Institute. The theoretical basis for analysis is briefly discussed and the provisions of the Specification used in the computer program are examined. The review of literature summarizes the current developments in the computerization of hot-rolled and cold-formed steel member design. A comparison of different methods used to compute some of the full section properties of cold-formed steel shapes is included in this thesis. It was found that for most of the cases investigated, commonly used approximations have minimal effects on the capacities of cold-formed steel beams and columns"--Abstract, leaf iii.

Book Analytical and Computational Modeling of Temperature dependent Material Properties Residual Stress and Torsional Behavior for Cold formed Steel Members

Download or read book Analytical and Computational Modeling of Temperature dependent Material Properties Residual Stress and Torsional Behavior for Cold formed Steel Members written by Yu Xia (Ph.D.) and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thin-walled cold-formed steel (CFS) members have been widely used in the construction industry because of their unique advantages. A new family of CFS known as advanced high-strength steel (AHSS) has been developed with unprecedented combinations of strength and ductility. An extensive study of the material properties and member structural performance of AHSS is presented. The study consists of five different parts. The first three parts introduce the material properties of AHSS under different temperature scenarios including ambient, elevated temperatures, and subzero temperatures. Each of the three parts contains the experimental stress-strain curves and key material properties, as well as the developments of the constitutive relation modeling and the predictive equations for the parameters required by the proposed constitutive models. The fourth part introduces the residual stress distribution of press-braked AHSS members. An experimental study using the sectioning method is conducted for the residual stress measurement and a numerical study using a validated finite element model is presented to provide extra residual stress data through the steel sheet thickness. The fifth part introduces the torsional behaviors of CFS members. It contains two parametric studies using validated models. The first parametric study contains the predictive equations of bimoment capacity for members under torsional loads. The second parametric study contains the controlling interaction equations between moment and bimoment for members under combined bending-torsion with different bracing and loading conditions. The study shows the uniqueness of AHSS material and structural behaviors compared with conventional steel and provides useful data and information for potential AHSS applications in the construction industry in the future.

Book Neural Dynamics Models for Scheduling cost Optimization of Construction Projects and Optimum Design of Cold formed Steel Beams

Download or read book Neural Dynamics Models for Scheduling cost Optimization of Construction Projects and Optimum Design of Cold formed Steel Beams written by Asim Salimul Karim and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important advantage of cold-formed steel is the greater flexibility of cross-sectional shapes and sizes available to the structural steel designer. The lack of standard optimized shapes, however, makes the selection of the most economical shape very difficult if not impossible. This task is further complicated by the complex and highly nonlinear nature of the rules that govern their design. A general mathematical formulation and computational model is presented for optimization of cold-formed steel beams. The nonlinear optimization problem is solved by adapting the robust neural dynamics model developed recently by Adeli and Park. The basis of the design can be AISI ASD or LRFD Specifications. The computational model has been applied to three different commonly-used types of cross-sectional shapes: hat, I, and Z shapes. The robustness and generality of the approach have been demonstrated by application to three different examples. This research lays the mathematical foundation for automated optimum design of structures made of cold-formed shapes. The result would be more economical use of cold-formed steel.

Book Thin Walled Structures Advances and Developments

Download or read book Thin Walled Structures Advances and Developments written by J. Zaras and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2001-06-18 with total page 779 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the papers presented at the Third International Conference on Thin-Walled Structures, Cracow, Poland on June 5-7, 2001. There has been a substantial growth in knowledge in the field of Thin-Walled Structures over the past few decades. Lightweight structures are in widespread use in the Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautical, Automobile, Chemical and Offshore Engineering fields. The development of new processes, new methods of connections, new materials has gone hand-in-hand with the evolution of advanced analytical methods suitable for dealing with the increasing complexity of the design work involved in ensuring safety and confidence in the finished products. Of particular importance with regard to the analytical process is the growth in use of the finite element method. This method, about 40 years ago, was confined to rather specialist use, mainly in the aeronautical field, because of its requirements for substantial calculation capacity. The development over recent years of extremely powerful microcomputers has ensured that the application of the finite element method is now possible for problems in all fields of engineering, and a variety of finite element packages have been developed to enhance the ease of use and the availability of the method in the engineering design process.
