Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These three volumes entitled Advances in Hypersonics contain the Proceedings of the Second and Third Joint US/Europe Short Course in Hypersonics which took place in Colorado Springs and Aachen. The Second Course was organized at the US Air Force Academy, USA in January 1989 and the Third Course at Aachen, Germany in October 1990. The main idea of these Courses was to present to chemists, com puter scientists, engineers, experimentalists, mathematicians, and physicists state of the art lectures in scientific and technical dis ciplines including mathematical modeling, computational methods, and experimental measurements necessary to define the aerothermo dynamic environments for space vehicles such as the US Orbiter or the European Hermes flying at hypersonic speeds. The subjects can be grouped into the following areas: Phys ical environments, configuration requirements, propulsion systems (including airbreathing systems), experimental methods for external and internal flow, theoretical and numerical methods. Since hyper sonic flight requires highly integrated systems, the Short Courses not only aimed to give in-depth analysis of hypersonic research and technology but also tried to broaden the view of attendees to give them the ability to understand the complex problem of hypersonic flight. Most of the participants in the Short Courses prepared a docu ment based on their presentation for reproduction in the three vol umes. Some authors spent considerable time and energy going well beyond their oral presentation to provide a quality assessment of the state of the art in their area of expertise as of 1989 and 1991.

Book Turbulent Reacting Flows and Supersonic Combustion

Download or read book Turbulent Reacting Flows and Supersonic Combustion written by C. T. Bowman and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental and computational investigation of supersonic combustion flows is in progress. The principal objective of the research is to gain a more fundamental understanding of mixing and chemical reaction in supersonic flows. The research effort comprises three inter-related elements: 1) an experimental study of mixing and combustion in a supersonic plane mixing layer; 2) development of laser-induced fluorescence techniques for time-resolved two-dimensional imaging of species concentration, temperature, velocity and pressure; and, 3) numerical simulations of compressible reacting flows. The design of the supersonic plane mixing layer was completed and the high-pressure gas storage system was installed. The pulsed lasers and camera systems, to be used for two-dimension flow field imaging, were installed and initial performance evaluations are in progress. This work has focussed on development of appropriate numerical methods for performing full-turbulence simulations of high-speed compressible flows and on the application of these methods to temporally and spatially developing compressible mixing layers. The effort to date has identified several promising numerical methods for compressible flow problems. In addition, a code was developed for compressible mixing layers, and initial simulation using this code shows interesting features, such as imbedded shock waves, in high-speed mixing layers. Keywords: Turbulent reacting flow, Laser diagnostics, Computational fluid dynamics.

Book Research on Supersonic Reacting Flows

Download or read book Research on Supersonic Reacting Flows written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental and computational investigation of supersonic reacting flows, with the objective of gaining a fundamental understanding of the flow physics and chemistry interactions, is in progress. During the past year, experiments were conducted in a supersonic shear flow facility to visualize the instantaneous, three-dimensional structure of the compressible mixing layer and to measure the mixing efficiency. The mixing efficiency was measured by applying a new planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) technique, termed "cold chemistry." The PLIF techniques, developed previously in our laboratory, were refined to allow measurements of temperature, velocity and multiple species in transient high-speed flows. Current codes for direct numerical simulation of time-developing, three-dimensional, reacting, compressible mixing layers were adapted for a new generation of supercomputers. Previously-developed stability analyses were extended to the range of conditions being investigated in the supersonic reacting flow experiments. (AN).

Book Scramjet Combustion

Download or read book Scramjet Combustion written by Gautam Choubey and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2022-07-08 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scramjet Combustion explores the development of a high-speed scramjet engine operating in the supersonic/hypersonic range for various air and space transport applications. The book explains the basic structure, components, working cycle, and the relevant governing equations in a clear manner that speaks to both advanced and more novice audiences. Particular attention is paid to efficient air–fuel combustion, looking at both the underlying fundamentals of combustion as well strategies for obtaining optimum combustion efficiency. Methods for reaching the chemically correct air–fuel ratio, subsequent flame, and combustion stabilization as air enters at supersonic speed are also outlined. Further, it includes the continuous on-going efforts, innovations, and advances with respect to the design modification of scramjet combustors, as well as different strategies of fuel injections for obtaining augmented performance while highlighting the current and future challenges. - Outlines the fundamentals of scramjet engines including their basic structure and components, working cycle, governing equations, and combustion fundamentals affecting the combustion and mixing processes - Presents new design modifications of scramjet combustors and different fuel injection strategies including combined fuel injection approaches - Discusses core topics such as chemical kinetics in supersonic flow, fuel–air mixing methods, strategies for combating combustion difficulties, and subsequent flame and combustion stabilization that can be applied to scramjets - Describes the pedagogy for computational approaches in simulating supersonic flows

Book Towards a Numerical Simulation of Supersonic Mixing Combustion

Download or read book Towards a Numerical Simulation of Supersonic Mixing Combustion written by Mohammed Kamel and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design and off-design studies of the hypersonic air-breathing engines face many challenges, due to the complexity of their internal flows. The mixing and combustion processes in Supersonic-Combustion Ramjet (scramjet) engines involve complicated aerothermochemical features, such as: the interactions between shock-waves and boundary-layer, the shock induced-combustion and the recirculation zones. In this study, a numerical solver is developed and validated to be an efficient design tool capable of simulating these complicated flow features of the supersonic combustors. For the code validation, several test cases are considered to monitor the code ability to solve for the diffusive and turbulent fluxes, and the chemical source term. In addition, the code is validated by resolving the transverse sonic injection into supersonic air flow in the case of Helium injection from a flat plate, and in the case of Hydrogen injection in a single-strut scramjet engine. The effectiveness of this injection technique in mixing and flame-holding is demonstrated. The results show good agreement with the previous numerical and experimental investigations, and prove the simulator's accuracy.
